I'm in medical school and have been taught multiple times the severe adverse effects of the fluoroquinolone drug class, and tendon rupture is always highly emphasized. My instructors have even gone as far to say to not prescribe drugs from this class if you can help it, since these effects are so severe. There are also so many other antibiotics that exist and do not carry these same adverse effects. So I am baffled and frustrated that the podiatrist did not believe that these classic signs of tendon rupture was not associated with recent Ciprofloxacin use. While I was watching the video and hearing the progressive tendon rupturing, I was just waiting for Mr. Ballen to mention a fluoroquinolone as the culprit.

I was an FNP in years past and I learned about this too. My main problem is not that the podiatrist didn’t have this potential side effect memorized, if he wasn’t prescribing the drug, but that he dismissed the idea that the drug was causing the rapidly progressing symptoms when the patient himself knew enough to bring it up. Awful!

I've taken Ciprofloxacin for a nasty post operative infection and like Alex, had I began to suffer from the symptoms he had I too wouldn't have known why this was happening. I'm very glad that I am one of those people who came away unscathed, but I pity Alex and all the "floxed" individuals enormously. But the cautionary tale here is that ALL medications have the capacity to do harm and NOBODY should take a medication if they haven't been informed of the potential for both short and long term harm. Tens of thousands of people in the US every single year die directly as a result of the medication they took!

"Misdiagnosed." That's what doctors do when they realize THEY caused the problem, or that they could have fixed it, but didn't do their job. They diagnose it as something else, so when the patient dies, or some other horrible thing happens, like they become paralyzed, the doctor doesn't get in trouble, and by extension, the hospital he works at. My mom was on her way out 4 years ago. Needed to go to the hospital several times. They kept claiming she was basically fine, until her health had gotten so bad, they couldn't just ignore it anymore, and finally ran some more costly tests, that they originally didn't want to, and discovered she was definitely dying, and they maybe could have prevented it, or slowed it down, had they cared to run more tests sooner. When she did finally die, we got her death certificate, which said she'd died from, "complications of Covid." Despite the doctors testing her for that every time she was there, and the results always being negative. They knew they messed up, and were trying to cover their asses. The hospital in my town is notorious for screwing up big time. A lot of people here go out of town for medical treatment. "Doctors" here can't even say the names of stuff they're prescribing, and if the answer isn't easy to find, they don't really want to look for it.

Some are even intentionally malicious, testing to see what they can get away with. I don't easily assume this is the case at all, but it's a scary thought. My mom was terribly mistreated with medication, it seemed pretty clear she even had a prescribed overdose at one point. I appreciate the medical system and am not someone to dismiss it, but I've grown incredibly distrustful of it and the sometimes greedy, lazy, incompetent etc. and/or just evil people in charge on various levels. Another layer is many in my position would go to alternative medicine, and likely get taken advantage of again.
My own experiences also have been unbelievably terrible, but I'm lucky to have not been neurologically poisoned and put near death. Well, as for the latter, that is unless you count that one time I was literally about to die within a few days max, if it wasn't for my mom's insistence I was actually suffering from the rare Kawasaki disease, despite everyone there telling my mom to just relax and leave it to the ''professionals'', I hope they all learned a lesson that day.
And these cases are just a few among how many times I've been simply baffled, I've developed some pretty serious distrust in supposed authorities in general throughout my life, in and outside the medical field. And again, I don't think I'm inclined to be, I certainly don't want to be.

Thats because more than 99% of people won't experience these side effects. All drugs have side effects, some mild, some severe, some can even be fatal, but the reason doctors still prescribe them is because the number of people who experience severe side effects from most drugs is extremely small. And for some drugs that have unpleasant side effects, there's just no alternative so they have to be tolerated but this is usually only done if the drug is to be taken short term.

@Jaz1375 I suffered a stroke in 2005 at 49 years old. You’re right to be afraid of being trapped in your own body. My mind was fully active but could not control my body. I was literally trapped inside my body understanding why was happening, people speaking to me but unable to react. Luckily it was a “minor” stroke that lasted about 2 hours but left a legacy of problems including how to walk and talk again. I lost my job and during the barrage of tests I found I had heart problems and had to take statins to lower cholesterol. When I started these medications I complained of joint pains and cramps which the doctors did not believe as Statins were the new wonder drug. Statins killed 60% of my heart muscle and have deteriorated my body where I need a walker to mobilise now. I suffered 6 heart attacks since.

I love all of your stories, but this one really chilled me to the bone. Years ago, I had a pretty bad UTI. My GP prescribed me Cipro and needless to say, it messed me up. I remember stopping the antibiotic halfway through because the side effects were so severe that I was willing to take my chances with the UTI pain and let my body heal on its own. Once I got better, I looked into CIpro online. It was terrifying. It was like opening a can of worms. I thought my reaction may have been rare or exaggerated, but it paled in comparison to what I found online. I immediately discarded the remaining pills and told my family to never allow myself of any of them be prescribed this med. I referred to it as poison. To this day, when a doctor's office asks if I am allergic to any meds I always say Cipro. I've always felt in my gut it was poison and never heard of this poor man's story. I'm so sorry he never got better - the ending broke my heart. I don't care what anyone says, no illness is worth taking that poison for. Stay away from Cipro.

FLUOROQUINOLONES! This is part of genetic intoletance, i.e. CBS genetic mutation. (It's not an 'allergy). Laughing gas and other drugs in that category can end you. [Cheap genetic test can exclude!]. I was given Ciprofloxacin (Cipro) around 2009 for a UTI and reacted with 'seasickness' after 1 pill. By 2nd, I was on the floor hallucinating. By 3rd of 6 pills I barely made it to my doc. Snapped tendons, especially in elderly is one of main side effects. I was in early 40's and stopped early. NIGHTMARE!
Reaction is called 'FLOXING', i.e. a specific type of medication poisoning and likely take WEEKS to get out of one's system - even knowing that milk thistle 800mg and niacin was flushing out this nightmare out faster, it took me 6 weeks.
I wear a medalert drug bracelet with the drug class on it. It is still used often with countless people suffering consequences - it's a go-to drug to treat Borellia Burgdorferi (aka Lyme). I was 'lucky' to stop my infectious disease specialist in time and was on 500mg Zithromax daily for 2 years. When you hear if a healthy person (especially a kid) dying from a mystery heart attack at a dentist after laughing gas it is likely untested CBS mutation.

This happened to my fiance in 2015 when he was 25. Sounds exactly like his story. Doctors dismissed him and made him feel crazy. He saw every specialist who said he was fine. I had to drag him to the bathroom on a blanket. It was so hard to watch. He became really depressed. Before being floxed he was so healthy, went to the gym and he used to be a valet so he was constantly running and active. It was crazy how his lifestyle had to change. He too went to the internet to find answers and even tried to tell the docots he knew what was wrong with him but they still dismissed him. He is doing so much better now. He is lucky! One thing that did help was acupuncture. It was the only thing that gave him relief and the acupuncturist was the only one who actually listened to his story about his pain without cutting him off. He has little to no Achilles tendon pain. He has a small flare-up every once in a while but he is very lucky. I would say it lasted about a year and a half. If anyone is going through this please stay strong! Look online and find support groups where you can talk to others dealing with the same thing! I really hope Alex gets fully better one day 🙏🏽

If I hadn't been a nurse with experience of this side effect I would have sought treatment for an injury while continuing the Cipro. Canada removed Cipro from their formulary. Here in the USA it's a common treatment for a bladder infection. Not many women would think their bladder problem caused their leg to stop working. Listening to this story is amazing! A few years back I went through almost exactly the same issues. I had been diagnosed with bronchitis and out on antibiotics, also, Cipro. After a few days in the medicine one day I woke up and started the day fine. Then a few hours into my day I broke out in a horrible case of hives. I went to the doctor to get something for relief from the hives and I noticed that my wrist was all of a sudden very sore. After leaving the doctor with instructions to discontinue the antibiotics I was on and drink a lot of water. I loved approximately 40 minutes from my doctors office. By the time I got to my driving could barely hold the steering wheel to turn. This condition just kept getting worse and worse to unbearable. Knowing I could not drive and not knowing what was happening I called for an ambulance. After being transported to the hospital and going through testing; they could find nothing and I was told the same thing that it seemed like an autoimmune disease. Was sent home the symptoms seemed the same. The next morning I woke up and couldn’t move on my own. I was taken to the hospital and spent a week in the hospital in pain that was so terrifying and scary. Unlike Alex, I was fortunate and in approximately 4 months I finally felt normal again. I believe it was because thankfully I only took the medication for a few days before having the horrible side effects. I will be praying for Alex, because there is no definition for the pain experienced from these side effects. The drug should be outlawed. Thank you for sharing and I hope others will be sure when prescribed a medication they do in fact, read ALL the side effects.

I’m fully wheelchair dependent due to my disorder and one thing I really wish people would understand is that ANYBODY can become disabled within a second, whether it be from a story like this, a car accident, a bad fall, or even a genetic disorder that slowly creeps up on you like mine. you can be the pinnacle of health and lose it all in a moment. if you’re currently able bodied, please educate yourself on accessibility and ableism, if not for the good of disabled folks, do it for yourself - you may join us someday.

The second time, the doctors simply told me they had no idea what was wrong. The third time this happened I was left screaming in my room on the floor and simply given 400 ml of Tylenol because my parents didn’t wanna pay for the medical bills to be told that the doctors didn’t know what was wrong with me

i think these lawssuits are all frivolous bunches of bs. EVERY SINGLE prescribed pill has SERIOUS side effects that COULD happen. but only a small percentage of people vs the amount of people that take them have them. It is up to YOU as the patient to READ the WARNING label given to you by the pharmicist with EVERY prescription you get. there are a lot of smaller side effects that you are even most likely going to experience. these are considered worth it to take care of what you are suffering. ie contipation, weight gain, dry mouth, etc. I take a handful of medications every day EVERY time i get a new prescription i read my paperwork that comes with it, and talk to my pharmicist. Don't bother with your Dr. Pharmacists know more about meds and what can be mixed with what than they do. Ultimately the only person who can decide what goes into YOUR mouth is YOU. if YOU choose to be IGNORANT of what the facts then that is your FAULT nobody else's. I have tuned down pills and asked for something different many times because i was not willing to either deal with known side effects that normally happen or take the chance of the possible side effects. Regardless, as soon as you start feeling ANYTHING different going on after taking a pill of ANY kind you call a medical professional. Just because it isn't listed as a possible side effect, doesn't mean it isn't/can' be a side effect for YOU. here's something people forget. while there are absolute's about the human body that Everyone has tha connects us all. there is a LOT they makes us all different which is why there are new diseases being discovered all the time). And they can't account for EVERY single possible side effect.

Believing otherwise leads to a lot of blame and impatience on the part of healthy people toward their disabled or ill friends and family. It's scary to know that you could require a wheelchair or lose an entire sense or become sick and never get better, but it is important to know that it's possible. It's part of why we should be working to make society more accessible and accepting of people whose bodies don't fit the "healthy" norm.

A couple hours later, it hurt worse, a whole lot worse, & there was blood in my urine. It took me about a half hour to work myself up to sit through the pain drive myself to the ER. After getting a painful sample from me, they hooked me up on a standard IV. A short bit later, the doctor comes back & says he's glad I got in when I did because I had a UTI which had spread to my kidneys, hence the pain. He had ordered an antibiotic on the IV, & said he was going to authorize a dose of pain meds as well. I asked if the pain meds were ok to drive on, & he was in shock that I drove myself in with as much pain as I was having! And no, you shouldn't drive while on whatever he was going to add, so I got an extra large dose of ibuprofen, & after a couple hours when the antibiotics were finished, I drove home. 😕

Oh Lord Jesus keep me safe and sound and help me to know that my life is in your hands and not in theirs. I will fear no evil for you are with me....God bless you all. 🙂🤓😎✌️

This is by far the scariest story you've told.
I've been dealing with a lot of symptoms for the last 6 months that resemble autoimmune diseases, but doctors can't find anything.
EVERYONE denies my back to back antibiotics for my wisdom teeth removal could have anything to do with it. Medications are no joke.

It’d be ten times worse I imagine knowing that you did it to yourself too. I don’t know how I would go on, after something like that. That’s awful, the worst part is the company that makes the drug isn’t even held accountable for any of their victims, since it was disclosed as a potential side effect. These companies literally get away with murdering, and destroying lives daily, and all for money. Pretty fucked up.

Well I have a story for you. I had taken a round of Cipro shortly before I saw this episode several months ago. At the time I developed plantar fasciitis but after a few weeks it went away, I chalked it up to the side effects and was thankful that in my case it was something very minor. I was spared the worse side effects that some people experienced. Fast forward to now about 6-7 months later and I just had surgery for a ruptured Achilles. I was running up a set of stairs when “pop!” Just like a rubber band snapping it ripped. Actually after the mri it showed that it ruptured in two places, in the middle of the tendon and down where it connects to the heel. So I’m sitting here rewatching this video, praying to God that nothing else happens and that it’s over… but I thought that before

@@Fallout-7614 I’m healed up pretty good, still walk with a limp. The hardest part after it’s healed is trying to regain strength after not being able not being able to walk for 6 months. Muscles atrophy really quick and take a long time to rebuild. Started jogging again but still super weak.Hopefully I don’t have any more tendon problems. It was really scary at one point when I could only use one leg the other Achilles became swollen, burning. And actually bruised. Dr said it was a strain or could have been a micro tear that was small enough to heal without surgery.
