Watched The Beach again last night. The internet scene made me cry. Richard looking at “that moment” and smiling, before his smile slowly fades and he becomes sad. “That moment” would never happen again. Nor would all those other incredible moments he’d had on the island…. A lot of the time in your life, you don’t realise those moments are so special when they are happening, that they won’t necessarily last, and the memories of them haunt you when you’re older…
I remember these days. I was sitting through classes drafting handwritten letters to friends. We had e-mail, but didn't use it. They just seemed more important than anything else did by that time.
yeah at the time you think these days will last forever.. before you know it bang 25 years are past and you know some of those people and those days are gone for eternity. Its a bittersweet feeling and this song just adds no those emotions! Its a mad place earth in it :) xx

I remember being younger and travelling, the people I met are now long gone in my life, just a distant memory and some of the places I got to experience will never be seen again other than in my mind and on photo. Even 7 years after uploading this, I am continuously filled with joy from everyone's comments on the video. For so many of us, The Beach has dug deep into our desire for adventure and interconnectedness.

Great moment though I sit here alone and a bit apathetic from what life has thrown at me, sometimes wishing it ended when life still had hope.
this movie changed my life forever... i will never forget my time without a care in the world, just a backpack and a one way ticket, falling in love every month, no plans farther than the week, nothing but a bag some clothes and an insatiable need to experience what life has to offer. i can never forget the connections i have made, and i am sure they all remember me too.
This movie came out when I was nearly 21. The world was in front of me. I adventured, loved, and lost. Now at 45, I can't say I regret a moment of it all.
I think everyone had their "The Beach" experience. It might not be similar to the film's scenes, except at the end when we look at a picture that tells a lot about the past and be grateful of it.
I think that’s why the movies main song “pure shores” suits it perfectly! It contains a lyric saying “take me to my beach” which I think perfectly suits the movie where we need to be taken to a paradise.
2019 was my first. I was born the year this movie came out and 2019 was my first real taste of LIFE. Since then ive been pining for that feeling. The feeling of travelling up the hai van pass on motorbikes on a day long ride. The whole of Vietnam. Unforgettable. All on 6 rolls of Kodak Colourplus, forevermore.
I love how richard looks around at all the people staring into the computers and shrugs at it. Its like a hidden message to say, the world will be swallowed by computers etc as this film was made in 2000 it would have been the start of the "digital revolution"
what about the scene from Northern exposure where Chris says eventually your living room will be connected to fiber optics and become the new town square, the place you will bliss out
That ending still hits hard. All the emotiins you felt through the movie, bad and good ones, are combined in a drug rush of emotions when the rendering of the picture occurs. Never saw a movie with a more perfect and emotion filled ending.
@@elizabethbennet4791 chinese have taken over it, all i hear now is all the beach bars are knocked down (which I volunteered for once, best days of my life) also the beaches from the construction from the chineese are littered with rubbish. All i know its not a haven for backpackers anymore for a place to chill out or party.

The Beach was a movie that I still remember because it perfectly sums up the feeling around 1999-2001.. when there was a pessimistic goodbye to the neohippy rave culture and a digitale age ahead with people spending their life in cubicals. this scene sums it up very destilled.
I remember being just shy of 20 years old and seeing this in February, 2000. Was playing ball in junior college in the far north of California and we were on a road trip somewhere in the central valley. It was pouring rain either after the game, or the night before I don't remember, but I do remember that I always would spend time in the theater during the season watching movies and reflecting on their stories as a form of meditation. I walked nearly a mile to get to the theater to watch this. Had no idea what it would be about exactly, but thought it "looked interesting". Nowadays, I can pick apart a couple of Rotten Tomatoes reviews and 9 times out of 10 decipher if I want to see a film or not. I'm never surprised anymore, but when I saw this it really hit home for me. Just 19, still in school, playing a simple game...no cell phones...and the pouring rain walking back to the hotel, it had just started when I made it to the theater. I walked back with a big grin on my face, staring up at the night sky off color with clouds and just laughed. Remember thinking something like 'Remember these little moments when you're sitting at that desk 20 years from now', which at this point is pretty much true, though as a builder you still get some adventure. Simpler times, was much healthier and open then, such is the thrill of being young and learning life's lessons along the way...Richard, Françoise and Etienne had a nice little run at doing something most other people wouldn't have done. They took a leap, and like most leaps that happen before you know where you'll land, you encounter danger and have to claw your way back to the world. What a ride
I'm 22 now. I just finished watching this movie. I guess maybe I understand the nostalgia you feel because these are the kind of movies I used to watch when I was little. You're a couple of decades ahead of me.. any suggestion you'd wanna give me? Like you're talking to your 22 year old self?
I watched this movie a few years ago and it really inspired me to leave everything behind and to go travelling . Now my travelling is over and I am back at home I have watched this video on repeat and it’s making me so nostalgic about the amazing people I’ve met and memories I have made on my journey. From my travels I have come to realise it’s so important in life to be grateful for the moments you are experiencing and have appreciation for the lovely people you get to share them with. Please anyone reading this , cherish every single moment you have and embrace life as much as you can , because you will never get those moments back.
I both love and hate this movie. Hear me out. It's a great film and novel but I also hate it because I wish I had gone on adventures when I was younger. Granted I'm not "too old" yet but at the same time I don't have that youthful passion anymore. Maybe in a parallel universe I am a young Richard type looking for paradise.
love how Richard has that "I'm not used to all these people and tech now" on his cafe computer on a 56k modem waiting for that picture to slowly appear. The look on his face watching it !!! the song (Dario G -Voice's *acoustic*) is perfect. We are all too busy living city lives these days, with no adventure or awe, just working away often miserably. If you haven't ever gone traveling/backpacking/spent a year or two away remotely i can understand you not understanding or liking the film, it's a film for people who have had that experience. there's a comment by someone below "When your young you don't give a damn about a time, when your old you realize time doesn't give a damn about you" - Those are Danny Boyle's words when he was describing the message of Trainspotting 2 in 2017 - he wasn't talking about the beach, but i guess it can still be applied here.
This makes me want to go back to Thailand so much... I miss it! Going travelling for 9 months was one of the bravest thing I've done - I'm naturally extremely shy and very socially awkward. This takes me back to the Phi Phi Islands... good times! :)
Man I get so sentimental watching this movie! When it came out to the cinemas I didn’t care to watch it, because it was so hyped. My mind was also somewhere else. A few years later I quit my job, sold everything, and went off to travel. It was the time of my life! When I came back the movie appeared somewhere and I watched it. It actually hurt to watch it and I understood all the movie had to tell. I experienced all of those things the movie talks about (except for going bonkers). And the end makes me tear up. 15 years later and sometimes I have to watch certain scenes that bring back the memories. I really miss the time of life between the 20’s to mid 30’s! And the end is true. But the hunger for that place one calls paradise is still there. Sometimes it sucks having it just as a memory. But I remember one moment; sitting in a cafe looking down to the city and having a revelation. I swore to myself to remember this moment, this privilege and keep it for those times, when life gets rough. I still remember intensely.
@@arklyshill Howdy. Not an off-map community. Back then I didn't have that mindset yet. Nowadays it's different :) But when traveling through eastern Europe and then Asia I met a lot of people that couldn't be put into a box and expanded my view of the world immensely. Also the many times I just spent alone observing everything; from nature to people, brought me to my senses. The feeling of freedom, and of being alive and awake at every moment of the day changed me for the better. Nowadays I search for the off-map community, as things have gotten mad as hell. What about you? Have you been traveling around?
@@arklyshill Oh yes; the search for paradise is still there, although I know it can only be found within. But I guess finding a place and being a part of a group of people sharing the same dream can make it a little easier :)
@@ruruloffelmacher6389 I just recently began to travel more than before, but I have never found something that huge like in the movie, but I do like to believe our planet holds something like that, as long as humans will be alive. I was only around Europe, but my dream is Asia, then other continents.
@@arklyshill Asia will be a very good spot to find those people. I recently heard that people have come together in Koh Phanghan (Thailand) to live an alternative life. Right now I'm trying to save up to look what they're about in a few months time. If we can travel at all come autumn. But maybe you can check it out. It's a beautiful island and I can imagine that one could find a spot of like minded people there :)
Was 14 when this movie came out, before my youth adventures were beginning. Now I'm 35, and they're basically over. I thank God I went out there and really made the most of my late teens and early 20s, and didn't stand in the corner thinking 'no, I better not do that".

@@gaurav3290 All good man. It's tough out there I know. I think just taking little steps could be the key. You don't have to travel overseas or anything straight away. Maybe just say 'yes' to something that comes up in the near future? I remember a time when I would hardly go to social gatherings, but one day I got invited to a party and just thought to myself 'why not?'. If I'm not enjoying myself I can always just leave. So I went along and ended up having a great time. It's just little things like that to begin with. But at the end of the day, do what makes you happy. Hope this has been some kind of help? But feel free to reach out again :)

Have an itinerary of what activities you want to do, but leave room in your plans that will allow you to do other impromptu activities, because it will happen. Have an open-mind but be respectful to the country and locals, you're the guest and they're your hosts. Of course, make sure to be safe because there is no fun without safety. Keep an open mind and just try new things. You'll meet people at your place of stay or on activities you do. These will serve as ice breakers, since you're doing a common activity where it'll be easier to talk to individuals. Down the line when you get more experienced, you'll be able to travel on your own and know what to do.
I rented this on vhs WAY back when it was first out. And ever since that initial viewing all those years ago, this is still one of few film endings I find myself thinking about every now and then. I remember the overall movie, of course. But the juxtaposition of what Richard had in the beach community vs the world he returns to and the perspective he has on what paradise means... truly a special coda to a story.
Hugely underrated movie , made me want to travel more and unlock that sense of freedom that the movie gives you. I went to Maya Bay in 2001 shortly after seeing ' The Beach ' film, it was a truly stunning place and Thailand was an amazing country . I went back in 2015, to the same places, although still nice, tourism had ruined it in my opinion and it was apparent how much technology had taken over peoples lives and spoilt their ability to enjoy first hand, the simple things in life. Everyone was too busy trying to take that perfect picture or selfie to brag on social media. People need to care less about what others think and just enjoy being in that special moment, because that's what makes you feel truly alive 👌
I’m a British citizen, been living in Hanoi for 8 years. I know my friends and family would love for me to come home, but being here is my paradise. A very difficult concept to communicate but I’m sure fans of this movie know exactly what I’m talking about!

I'm 22 and anything but carefree. Currently in Australia after having been in Thailand for 2 months want to make the most of this life but feel so negative.
...my fave film... if you understand it all - its a gem. uplifting, inspiring, it introduced to continue to travel , see the world, in the your youth, be open minded, humble and go with the flow... never judge, be polite and never out stay your welcome. Money, fame, fortune... is only matters if your truly happy inside.

And the line that made me love this even more and put into words the feeling I couldn't express.
I have his quote screen shotted on my lab top desktop. Every time I think of a good memory or if I feel lonely, I look at that quote and remember all the best things in my life and the people I love
This movie came out around the time I finished school.. backpacking around the world and constantly in and out of internet cafes like this. Such good memories.. this movie of course being one of them and especialy this song . Love Leo

What an amazing ending to this film. It's nostalgic and so emotive it brings tears to my eyes. Guys, I just have to say that if you liked the film you're gonna love the book. Alex Garland is an excellent writer.

It's always hard to convey to people how influential The Beach has been throughout my life, and in particular the ending. Thanks for the upload, I remember seeing it in theaters like it was yesterday.
I saw the movie first then read the book, but I gotta say I really like this ending. The execution and music selection, the photo and Richard's smile gradually turning into a look of guilt and regret, it created a very poignant moment.
@@MetroCop2077 For the character maybe, but not for the movie. Most people today are more and more trapped by technology all the time. Living in the real word is dangerous, but at least it is real. The ending of this film was phenomenal. It's predicting the ending for everyone living in the West.

@@MetroCop2077 The pot farmers forced them to leave. What movie were you watching? The movie also argued that people are rotten, not civilization. They let a shark-bite victim die so they could stay on the beach. The woman was prepared to murder to stay there.
Can you believe after 21 f***ing years I finally got to see this movie? I even forgot it existed, untill I saw the announcement it was going to be on tv. So I watched and it was much better than I expected.
A esta película la vi cuando yo tenía 23 años en el año 2000 y esa frase final "lo importante no es a dónde vas sino como te sientes en el momento en que llegas a formar parte de algo y si encuentras ese momento es para siempre" me impactó mucho pero con el tiempo se me olvidó, hasta que empecé a viajar solo, y en mí últimas etapa de parar en Hostel amis 36 años, justo conocí a un grupo de tres muchachos y una chica y tuvimos dos días magníficos, he perdido el contacto con ese grupo pero tengo gran recuerdos ojalá estén bien, y a esta película la vi hace unos 5 meses y recordé esa frase y me trajo grandes recuerdos hoy es 05/03/2024 siendo las 00:25, y a mis 46 años , extraño ese pequeño momento 🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷
This is certainly one of my favorite movie scene, it's exactly how I see the paradise..... Everything is perfect on this scene, Leonardo looks so different from the others people in the cybercafe, so free in his head..... The music is perfect too.... Today I got several health issues I can't travel anymore, I can't take planes cause of lymphatic oedema in my legs but each time I see this scene it remind me that travelling is the essence of happiness...... Cause there is always something to discover if you know where to look and how you live the moment.
@@esraahassan371 Well at the end of the movie when everyone leaves the island they all go their separate ways, but his girlfriend sends him the photograph they all took together which is just a reminder of what happened. So, no, they are no longer together physically, but I think spiritually everyone on that island will be connected forever. Cheers!

As much as you want to empathize with Richard and his adventure, his arrival was the beginning of the end of that place....not that he could have known. Imagine having to return to society after something like that.
I think it is much shaped in the book. Mr Duffy could give the map for any backpackers. The main goal was to get more people to the island end "destroy" the Utopia there. Richard was a tool in the hands of Mr Duffy. Eventually the colony would end in a tragedy. And the books ending is more darker than in the movie where the members of the colony stab Richard almost to death as a revenge for exposing the beach, who barely escapes with Francoise and Ettiene at the end.
I was at Maya Bay 2 days ago. The beach is absolutely breathtaking! You can’t go on it anymore. You can just pass it on your boat tour. It’s still worth the trip. My tour stopped on different islands along the way for water activities. It really is heaven on earth#beachlife
I know right! I was there for my honeymoon about 2 yrs back. The beach was really over crowded. Still none the less it was a beautiful place. Went there on purpose because of this movie and it was one of my bucket list checks. Love the soundtrack and everything about this movie. Pity its all closed now.
I will never forget when, in 2010, after my longest relationship, I listened to the song "Pure Shores" from the movie The Beach every day for about two or three months, several hours a day. This video brought me back to that time. It was in 2010 when I was 27 years old; now I am 41.
i don't know why but its more relaxing to me to watch old content style which is filled with needed cuts and transitions not like nowdays, fast and running way of editing. uffff i am tired with this rush in this new world.Those days were great 😌
Xmas Day 2021 in Phuket (sailing on a friend's yacht). This movie and later the book inspired my first trip to Thailand back in the early 2000s and here I am after an epic road trip the last 6 months finding empty beaches and snorkelling and diving and creating moments. It's been **awesome**. And no I wasn't one of the idiots who crammed into Maya Bay beach until they were forced to close it. It opens again next week and I'm still not going - if you think thats the nicest beach in Thailand, then you need to go exploring...😁
He finished Daffy's work, he represents chaos in an otherwise ordered paradise. He's not the good guy at all, the only moral character in the movie is Etienne.
I thought about that so many times and so many years later! Still this film is timeless .. I love the ending cause it takes me back to my youth and makes me realize we were all a part of something special that lasts a lifetime .

I relate so much to the line "of course you can never forget what you've done...but we adapt...we carry one" and then the curious side glances to people next to Richard.... almost asking "where are you from / where are you going / do you want to grab beer and hang out", typical adventure questions. and then the almost pity for people who miss out on that sort of life. but then... it's not their fault people get absorbed by screens. be happy for the times you enjoyed, remember them, suck life from them. you did it. you saw the light. maybe not forever but you are happy you tasted the good life.
Great time. A perfect balance between snail mail communication and instant messaging. You'd check messages once a week if you can be bothered. The rest of the time is yours to enjoy in the moment.
When this came out I was 10 and I had already been *seriously* moved by Titanic so my little mind couldn’t accept Leo as anyone but Jack 😂 not to mention the fact I was too young to watch it so I forgot about it until a few years ago when I noticed it was on Netflix. I can’t believe it took me so long to watch it! My uncles (who were much like older brothers growing up) used to travel a lot, especially to Thailand and it reminds me of them (two of them have since passed away) and like everyone else I love the last bit because it reminds me of returning home after travelling - such a bittersweet feeling! Come back to this video all the time
I was 27 when this movie came out(2000). At the time, I thought the 90's sucked...they were so boring and had no "style" compared to the 70's & 80's. Now I look back and see that it was the last decade human beings spent WITH their friends. It was the deep breath...the calm before the storm that is the 2000's. Looking at this closing scene in which the internet was so new and Richard looking at those around him in bewilderment/disgust almost as if he knows it's over, that we would never connect in the same ways again. We "like" and "hashtag", but don't really know anyone anymore. The desire for human contact was only fulfilled by going out and engaging with life, not by sending an emoji...I miss it and my friends.

Man i was backpacking through thailand back in 2008 or 2009 (dont even remember) and the years have just passed so fast. Im now 35. Leo is 49 now so I guess I should feel young :D
I can watch this movie over and over again, it gives me goosebumps and a sense of excitement. It takes me back years ago to a time I once knew, travelling to Thailand and embarking on one of the greatest trips of my life. If you’re in your 20’s get out there and explore the world, get out of your comfort zone, live amongst different cultures and communities, meet new people and enjoy that holiday love. Life is beautiful.
"Parallel universe, love Francoise. X" I just saw this movie for the first time because if Moby's song Porcelain. I'm so glad I checked it out. One of my new favorites. It had a few corny moments, but overall an amazing movie, and an amazing soundtrack. I have a craving for an adventure now.

this movie changed my life forever... i will never forget my time without a care in the world, just a backpack and a one way ticket, falling in love every month, no plans farther than the week, nothing but a bag some clothes and an insatiable need to experience what life has to offer. i can never forget the connections i have made, and i am sure they all remember me too.

2019 was my first. I was born the year this movie came out and 2019 was my first real taste of LIFE. Since then ive been pining for that feeling. The feeling of travelling up the hai van pass on motorbikes on a day long ride. The whole of Vietnam. Unforgettable. All on 6 rolls of Kodak Colourplus, forevermore.

I love how richard looks around at all the people staring into the computers and shrugs at it. Its like a hidden message to say, the world will be swallowed by computers etc as this film was made in 2000 it would have been the start of the "digital revolution"

That ending still hits hard. All the emotiins you felt through the movie, bad and good ones, are combined in a drug rush of emotions when the rendering of the picture occurs. Never saw a movie with a more perfect and emotion filled ending.
If you think this one pulls the heart strings at the end, try this movie Midnight Sun (2018 film). Beautiful Movie.

The Beach was a movie that I still remember because it perfectly sums up the feeling around 1999-2001.. when there was a pessimistic goodbye to the neohippy rave culture and a digitale age ahead with people spending their life in cubicals. this scene sums it up very destilled.
Paradise is not a place, it is a feeling you have when you are part of something wonderful. And it lasts for ever.

I don’t even remember the last time I’ve step into an Internet Café
I remember being just shy of 20 years old and seeing this in February, 2000. Was playing ball in junior college in the far north of California and we were on a road trip somewhere in the central valley. It was pouring rain either after the game, or the night before I don't remember, but I do remember that I always would spend time in the theater during the season watching movies and reflecting on their stories as a form of meditation. I walked nearly a mile to get to the theater to watch this. Had no idea what it would be about exactly, but thought it "looked interesting". Nowadays, I can pick apart a couple of Rotten Tomatoes reviews and 9 times out of 10 decipher if I want to see a film or not. I'm never surprised anymore, but when I saw this it really hit home for me. Just 19, still in school, playing a simple game...no cell phones...and the pouring rain walking back to the hotel, it had just started when I made it to the theater. I walked back with a big grin on my face, staring up at the night sky off color with clouds and just laughed. Remember thinking something like 'Remember these little moments when you're sitting at that desk 20 years from now', which at this point is pretty much true, though as a builder you still get some adventure. Simpler times, was much healthier and open then, such is the thrill of being young and learning life's lessons along the way...Richard, Françoise and Etienne had a nice little run at doing something most other people wouldn't have done. They took a leap, and like most leaps that happen before you know where you'll land, you encounter danger and have to claw your way back to the world. What a ride

I watched this movie a few years ago and it really inspired me to leave everything behind and to go travelling . Now my travelling is over and I am back at home I have watched this video on repeat and it’s making me so nostalgic about the amazing people I’ve met and memories I have made on my journey.
From my travels I have come to realise it’s so important in life to be grateful for the moments you are experiencing and have appreciation for the lovely people you get to share them with. Please anyone reading this , cherish every single moment you have and embrace life as much as you can , because you will never get those moments back.

It's a great film and novel but I also hate it because I wish I had gone on adventures when I was younger. Granted I'm not "too old" yet but at the same time I don't have that youthful passion anymore. Maybe in a parallel universe I am a young Richard type looking for paradise.

love how Richard has that "I'm not used to all these people and tech now" on his cafe computer on a 56k modem waiting for that picture to slowly appear. The look on his face watching it !!! the song (Dario G -Voice's *acoustic*) is perfect. We are all too busy living city lives these days, with no adventure or awe, just working away often miserably. If you haven't ever gone traveling/backpacking/spent a year or two away remotely i can understand you not understanding or liking the film, it's a film for people who have had that experience. there's a comment by someone below "When your young you don't give a damn about a time, when your old you realize time doesn't give a damn about you" - Those are Danny Boyle's words when he was describing the message of Trainspotting 2 in 2017 - he wasn't talking about the beach, but i guess it can still be applied here.
All these years and the nostalgia I get still from watching this movie and scene is unreal. Just perfect.
This makes me want to go back to Thailand so much... I miss it! Going travelling for 9 months was one of the bravest thing I've done - I'm naturally extremely shy and very socially awkward. This takes me back to the Phi Phi Islands... good times! :)

When it came out to the cinemas I didn’t care to watch it, because it was so hyped. My mind was also somewhere else. A few years later I quit my job, sold everything, and went off to travel. It was the time of my life!
When I came back the movie appeared somewhere and I watched it. It actually hurt to watch it and I understood all the movie had to tell. I experienced all of those things the movie talks about (except for going bonkers). And the end makes me tear up.
15 years later and sometimes I have to watch certain scenes that bring back the memories.
I really miss the time of life between the 20’s to mid 30’s!
And the end is true. But the hunger for that place one calls paradise is still there. Sometimes it sucks having it just as a memory.
But I remember one moment; sitting in a cafe looking down to the city and having a revelation. I swore to myself to remember this moment, this privilege and keep it for those times, when life gets rough.
I still remember intensely.

@@arklyshill Howdy. Not an off-map community. Back then I didn't have that mindset yet. Nowadays it's different :) But when traveling through eastern Europe and then Asia I met a lot of people that couldn't be put into a box and expanded my view of the world immensely. Also the many times I just spent alone observing everything; from nature to people, brought me to my senses. The feeling of freedom, and of being alive and awake at every moment of the day changed me for the better. Nowadays I search for the off-map community, as things have gotten mad as hell. What about you? Have you been traveling around?
@@arklyshill Oh yes; the search for paradise is still there, although I know it can only be found within. But I guess finding a place and being a part of a group of people sharing the same dream can make it a little easier :)

Right now I'm trying to save up to look what they're about in a few months time. If we can travel at all come autumn. But maybe you can check it out. It's a beautiful island and I can imagine that one could find a spot of like minded people there :)
Was 14 when this movie came out, before my youth adventures were beginning. Now I'm 35, and they're basically over. I thank God I went out there and really made the most of my late teens and early 20s, and didn't stand in the corner thinking 'no, I better not do that".

@@gaurav3290 All good man. It's tough out there I know. I think just taking little steps could be the key. You don't have to travel overseas or anything straight away. Maybe just say 'yes' to something that comes up in the near future? I remember a time when I would hardly go to social gatherings, but one day I got invited to a party and just thought to myself 'why not?'. If I'm not enjoying myself I can always just leave. So I went along and ended up having a great time. It's just little things like that to begin with. But at the end of the day, do what makes you happy. Hope this has been some kind of help? But feel free to reach out again :)

Have an itinerary of what activities you want to do, but leave room in your plans that will allow you to do other impromptu activities, because it will happen. Have an open-mind but be respectful to the country and locals, you're the guest and they're your hosts. Of course, make sure to be safe because there is no fun without safety. Keep an open mind and just try new things. You'll meet people at your place of stay or on activities you do. These will serve as ice breakers, since you're doing a common activity where it'll be easier to talk to individuals.
Down the line when you get more experienced, you'll be able to travel on your own and know what to do.
I rented this on vhs WAY back when it was first out. And ever since that initial viewing all those years ago, this is still one of few film endings I find myself thinking about every now and then. I remember the overall movie, of course. But the juxtaposition of what Richard had in the beach community vs the world he returns to and the perspective he has on what paradise means... truly a special coda to a story.

Hugely underrated movie , made me want to travel more and unlock that sense of freedom that the movie gives you. I went to Maya Bay in 2001 shortly after seeing ' The Beach ' film, it was a truly stunning place and Thailand was an amazing country . I went back in 2015, to the same places, although still nice, tourism had ruined it in my opinion and it was apparent how much technology had taken over peoples lives and spoilt their ability to enjoy first hand, the simple things in life. Everyone was too busy trying to take that perfect picture or selfie to brag on social media. People need to care less about what others think and just enjoy being in that special moment, because that's what makes you feel truly alive 👌

Don't know why Danny Boyle doesn't like this movie. It was actually a pretty solid effort. Great soundtrack and acting.

this is one of those films that sticks in your head. Especially the last scene with the picture is really really intense

This is certainly one of my favorite movie scene, it's exactly how I see the paradise..... Everything is perfect on this scene, Leonardo looks so different from the others people in the cybercafe, so free in his head..... The music is perfect too.... Today I got several health issues I can't travel anymore, I can't take planes cause of lymphatic oedema in my legs but each time I see this scene it remind me that travelling is the essence of happiness...... Cause there is always something to discover if you know where to look and how you live the moment.

@@esraahassan371 Well at the end of the movie when everyone leaves the island they all go their separate ways, but his girlfriend sends him the photograph they all took together which is just a reminder of what happened. So, no, they are no longer together physically, but I think spiritually everyone on that island will be connected forever. Cheers!

Just this scene for 2 : 47 shows how good of an actor Leonardo is . He makes you feel exactly what his character feels . Great movie !
As much as you want to empathize with Richard and his adventure, his arrival was the beginning of the end of that place....not that he could have known. Imagine having to return to society after something like that.
I think it is much shaped in the book. Mr Duffy could give the map for any backpackers. The main goal was to get more people to the island end "destroy" the Utopia there. Richard was a tool in the hands of Mr Duffy. Eventually the colony would end in a tragedy. And the books ending is more darker than in the movie where the members of the colony stab Richard almost to death as a revenge for exposing the beach, who barely escapes with Francoise and Ettiene at the end.

I was at Maya Bay 2 days ago. The beach is absolutely breathtaking! You can’t go on it anymore. You can just pass it on your boat tour. It’s still worth the trip. My tour stopped on different islands along the way for water activities. It really is heaven on earth#beachlife
I know right! I was there for my honeymoon about 2 yrs back. The beach was really over crowded. Still none the less it was a beautiful place. Went there on purpose because of this movie and it was one of my bucket list checks. Love the soundtrack and everything about this movie. Pity its all closed now.

Xmas Day 2021 in Phuket (sailing on a friend's yacht). This movie and later the book inspired my first trip to Thailand back in the early 2000s and here I am after an epic road trip the last 6 months finding empty beaches and snorkelling and diving and creating moments. It's been **awesome**.
And no I wasn't one of the idiots who crammed into Maya Bay beach until they were forced to close it. It opens again next week and I'm still not going - if you think thats the nicest beach in Thailand, then you need to go exploring...😁

A timeless wanderlust film
Leo murdered a swede got some stoners killed and ruined a beach community that stood for 6 years but somehow he's the good guy in this story
He finished Daffy's work, he represents chaos in an otherwise ordered paradise. He's not the good guy at all, the only moral character in the movie is Etienne.
I thought about that so many times and so many years later! Still this film is timeless .. I love the ending cause it takes me back to my youth and makes me realize we were all a part of something special that lasts a lifetime .

Just cameback from phuket yesterday n visit maya bay. Absolutely stunning. White beaches ,blue water.
I relate so much to the line "of course you can never forget what you've done...but we adapt...we carry one" and then the curious side glances to people next to Richard.... almost asking "where are you from / where are you going / do you want to grab beer and hang out", typical adventure questions. and then the almost pity for people who miss out on that sort of life. but then... it's not their fault people get absorbed by screens.
be happy for the times you enjoyed, remember them, suck life from them. you did it. you saw the light. maybe not forever but you are happy you tasted the good life.

When this came out I was 10 and I had already been *seriously* moved by Titanic so my little mind couldn’t accept Leo as anyone but Jack 😂 not to mention the fact I was too young to watch it so I forgot about it until a few years ago when I noticed it was on Netflix. I can’t believe it took me so long to watch it! My uncles (who were much like older brothers growing up) used to travel a lot, especially to Thailand and it reminds me of them (two of them have since passed away) and like everyone else I love the last bit because it reminds me of returning home after travelling - such a bittersweet feeling! Come back to this video all the time
I was 27 when this movie came out(2000). At the time, I thought the 90's sucked...they were so boring and had no "style" compared to the 70's & 80's. Now I look back and see that it was the last decade human beings spent WITH their friends. It was the deep breath...the calm before the storm that is the 2000's. Looking at this closing scene in which the internet was so new and Richard looking at those around him in bewilderment/disgust almost as if he knows it's over, that we would never connect in the same ways again. We "like" and "hashtag", but don't really know anyone anymore. The desire for human contact was only fulfilled by going out and engaging with life, not by sending an emoji...I miss it and my friends.
Sounds like you dont know how to enjoy the moment you're in.
@@Bazinga73904 you can but it's definitely not the same. Especially when you get older and have experienced everything there is to feel. Maybe that's just me being cynical though. Idk. I don't think negatively. I just tend to look back more nowadays.
Man i was backpacking through thailand back in 2008 or 2009 (dont even remember) and the years have just passed so fast. Im now 35. Leo is 49 now so I guess I should feel young :D
I can watch this movie over and over again, it gives me goosebumps and a sense of excitement. It takes me back years ago to a time I once knew, travelling to Thailand and embarking on one of the greatest trips of my life. If you’re in your 20’s get out there and explore the world, get out of your comfort zone, live amongst different cultures and communities, meet new people and enjoy that holiday love. Life is beautiful.

I just saw this movie for the first time because if Moby's song Porcelain. I'm so glad I checked it out.
One of my new favorites. It had a few corny moments, but overall an amazing movie, and an amazing soundtrack. I have a craving for an adventure now.
We all have memories and moments we took for granted ❤ people we shared these times with who we will never see again. The ending hits hard 💔 the Internet revolution has started and life will never be the same 😢
