This movie, this song, Leo and an encyclopaedia saved my little miserable life. Growing up in an abusive household i used to escape into fantasy traveling the world and all I wanted was to see the rainforest and these beautiful place. This dream kepy me alive. When I turned 18 i took of with 50 euros in my pocket and a few years later I made it to Thailand, where I stayed for more then a year, healing my wounds and discovering buddhism. Thank you, till today this song creates a longing in my soul for a better world like no other song can
I watched this movie for the first time in the early 2000s when I was very young and it left a profound impression on me - even at the age of 8, I could not believe that a place this beautiful existed. When I was older, around 15, I was expelled from school and went through a very hard time. I picked up the book 'The Beach' and it gave me a sense of relief from reality as I coped with one of the most challenging periods of my life. At the age of 22, I booked a one-way flight to Thailand sporadically. Hungry for adventure, $1,900 in the bank, and ready for anything and everything. Without knowing it, I had somehow booked a flight to a destination close to 'The Beach' (Phuket). Coincidentally, I had also started re-reading the book for the first time in a long time before my flight. When I arrived in Phuket with a teaching credential in hand and less than 2k in my pocket I found a job randomly on Koh Phi Phi (neighboring 'Beach' island) teaching English at a resort. I realized how close I was to the beach and knew that I had to go there. My Thai friends heard about my story and my infatuation with the book and movie and they went out of their way to get me there. I went on an overnight tour that lets you sleep on 'The Beach' in Maya Bay Koh Phi Phi Leh...I had the time of my life. It was everything I could have ever dreamed it would be since my childhood when I first saw the movie and read the book. The next day, the staff of the tour offered me a job on 'The Beach'. I spent the next 6 months of my life on this tour sleeping in this place every night. I am at a loss for words. I never believed in fate until the universe somehow aligned itself for me on this incredible journey to this magical place. I am so grateful to be alive and to have the experiences that I have had. Life is so crazy and beautiful....all it takes is a leap of faith to realize it. The Beach will stay with me forever. It is a part of me in more ways than I can ever describe. Thank you Alex Garland for writing this book. It has changed my life. All I have done for the past 7 years is travel. I have started a TH-cam channel to document my stories. I wish everyone who reads this the absolute best in life. This profound thing we are all experiencing is short-lived and I hope that you make the most of your time in this special place while you have it. Enjoy your life.
Thank you for sharing this beautiful story of your life changing experience in Thailand. To me I will always feel this connection to Thailand, the Beach by Alex Garland and Maya Bay. This film exemplifies this connection. A time before social media and during the age of the fearless traveller. I went to Maya Bay back in 2010 and it was an incredible experience for me. The beach was beautiful, the sea crystal clear and the reminders of the film were clear to see. The only thing that made the experience less special were the amount of tourists, tour boats and limited time on the beach. I would have loved to have spent the night on the beach. You were so lucky to experience what you went through. I hope that you will go back one day, but sometimes the memories are best kept and returning can be a disappointment.
@@Trepines Thank you! I know what you mean. The tour boats and amount of people there is absolutely obnoxious. I am so glad that I got to be part of a tour that takes you away from all that by letting you camp. Although this is bad news for anyone that wants to go to 'The Beach'...it is good news for the environment - the beach was closed for rehabilitation after I left my job. The ecology of the area got so bad due to tourism. Now only small groups of people are allowed in at a time to ensure that everyone can experience this slice of paradise with intimacy. One day I will return. Take care!

Leonardo DiCaprio was a huge star then after Titanic and I haven't seen such a fan following since then, for an actor. He was definitely a teenage icon then, and we all adored him and looked forward to watching him in a movie. Ofcourse later when the movie released, the songs as well as the soundtrack went on to become immensely popular, especially with young audiences worldwide. The movie also inspired me to travel to Bangkok then. I still have fond memories of that incredible trip to Thailand. Well nothing untoward happened, like in the movie, but the experience left a lasting impression on my soul. Thanks for reading.

I finally got to Thailand on 24th June and stayed for 17 days. I waited 24 years to go there and loved every second. Highlights of the holiday: Catamaran around Phang Nga Bay (also visited the James Bond island), went to Maya Bay (sand like fine flour), then snorkelled around the other side of the island with black tip sharks, sea snakes, angel fish and parrot fish and swam in Phi Leh lagoon; went to Krabi and sat with the dusky face monkeys, had a Golden tree snake fall on my head, walked Phranang and Railway beaches, stayed in a super amazing resorts, sunbathed on Bamboo island, and stayed in the most amazing resort in Phuket. I find the book much better, i can relate to many things in ot went to Thailand first time in 1992, been back at least 25 times and have travelled all over SE Asia
Makes me feel hugely nostalgic...I was at uni, 19 and loving life! Still loving life at 41 but there was a wonderful innocence and positivity to the early noughties (despite lots of bad things still happening). It was just before social media took over, but we still had all the positives of the internet. Life felt a bit better, rawer and more real when we didn't film/record every single moment of our life. Just enjoyed the present moment a bit more and less focused on aesthetics. Glad I lived through those times. Not that you can't rediscover those times..just disengage from too much social media!
@Natasha Alicia Tobin ullah If you do, Go to Kho Samet a small island five hrs from Bangkok the closest place to heaven i have ever seen. if you like a beach, Sand like sugar. x
That’s awesome. One of my first experiences high was alone with headphones on listening to Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie & The Infinite Sadness. The track “Porcelina of the Vast Oceans” in particular gave me a pretty psychedelic experience on cannabis.
I sometimes think this film seems so significant and moving is because by the time it was released, so many of us who'd read the novel four or five years earlier and went to see the movie were hit by a huge sense of nostalgia for a time that had already gone. Beautiful film, beautiful song.
I'm a 90's kid, born in 92' - I saw this along the way. Its so impactful and iconic. My dream has yet to come true. I've had tastes visiting different parts of the world. Unfortunately the right woman has not and may not come - but I can hope. Maybe lets try to live our dream if slightly. If not seeing a bit of fantasy never hurt anyone. I'm glad at least God allowed me to see this movie and some of the beauty out there - a lot of the UK, cities especially is ugly man. Gotta get myself out there again.
I was 31 when this film was released. I was actually on honeymoon on a quite close island while it was being filmed. I thought it was quite entertaining when it came out. As I have got even older over the years I realise what I missed as a young person not willing to take risks. I "get it" now and deeply regret not throwing caution to the wind. To everyone that did, with success or failure, I raise my hat (and a glass of vodka).
This song has a LOT in common with the Grimes album "Art Angels." I remember Grimes saying that album was super inspired by late 90s/early 00s alternative pop....and you can definitely hear it throughout the album. And this song seems like it was probably a direct inspiration for the sound of Art Angels. So.....if you like this song, I highly recommend looking up that album! Start with the song Realiti, but NOT the album version, instead watch the music video....which uses the demo version of the song, which is significantly better.
Yeah! Going to Thailand when this movie was released. Pi Pi and the, (quite not as impressive) Maya Beach. Backpackers. Fun people. Horny Brit girls. Fun Times!
Watched this film when I was 8 years old and it really mesmerised me how beautiful the location was and the love scene 😍 12 years later I spent my 21st birthday on The Beach and it was nostalgia and moby on repeat for one week haha was a masterpiece I am so lucky to have experienced a full moon party on the island I had the time of my life ❤

This movie brings me back down memory lane, reminding me of the first trip to Thailand some 25 years ago. I was fresh out of uni, girlfriend and a copy of Lonely Planet's Southeast Asia on a Shoestring in tow and spent a year travelling around the world. Some of my current friends don't understand what I see in Thailand or other countries in Asia (say India) but it's emotions and memories at this point that forge an unbreakable bond. The Beach really brings me back there every time and I hope my two children will come to forge their own memoreis as we travel in the region. Here's to memories, old and new!
I remember this movie. I forgotten about this song until gta v. When they brought this song to the game and remember how nostalgic it sounded. A real beach type music alright
While no masterpiece , this movie is really fun and enjoyable and holds important part in my life. The year after it came out i ended up backpacking across China and South East Asia. The Beach was on the to do list and we did it properly. We paid a local fishermen to take us out there late afternoon and pick us up the next morning. It was a national park and forbidden but we still got away with it even with Thai patrols checking at night for the theft of the Swift's bird's nests in the cliffs, Birds Nest Soup, a delicacy in China. It was magical, a stary sky, bioluminescence in the water at night. In the morning a snake track in the sand next to my sleeping bag was an interesting start to my day at The Beach. A photo my fiend took in the dunes behind the beach of me waking up in my sleeping bag looking over the water resides on my living room wall to this day. Ah, i miss the days of internet cafes, the days of having to make an effort!
Just watched this movie today for the first time. Wow! What an amazing movie. I'm so glad I watches it because I had it in my watchlist for months and today was the last day before it was removed from Peacock. Legendary movie!🔥🔥🔥
Having lived in 🇹🇭 for 10 yrs those dayz are gone most islands are fu.... Now hopefully with no tourists for the last 2 yrs it may recover a little i truely hope so as this place is paradise
Hard not to be nostalgic about this one. Class of 2000, and this was the dream for many, influenced by MTVs Cancun spring breaks, and Wild on E!’s, Brooke Burke, it was hard not to want to go travel around the tropics and explore whilst we were all yet young and free…maybe we’d even find that 5’5, gorgeous, brunette, French girl we all fell in love with watching, The Beach.
Excellent track.....had forgotten about it until I randomly played the soundtrack to The Beach last night. Great soundtrack all around....but this song sticks out. It's so good. It's SO late 90s/early 00s.....nice mix of pure top 40 pop mixed with more shoegazey dream pop. So simple and pure...

My Sarah Kate P read this book to me while driving up the east coast of Australia on a 3 month trip exploring the beaches. Best time of my life and yes we managed to hide in one of the deserted Island in the Whitsunday, that was 23 years ago..... how time flies.
Awesome thanks for sharing.
Only a few could understand the essence of this masterpiece 🖤
I find the book much better, i can relate to many things in ot went to Thailand first time in 1992, been back at least 25 times and have travelled all over SE Asia

An amazing book, an even better film, a super soundtrack, and a stellar performance from Caprio et al.
Real message of this movie is that there is no ideal place to be in.Thats place is inside us and will be revealed at the end of this earth life.
You said it all mate, that's the real message.
Why at the end of life? Lol
Real message was don't fuck with sharks
👍🤝
I dunno. I got some better spots than that here in NZ. Literally have them to ourselves or myself many times.
And they are great for the soul.
Remember watching this movie when I was a teenager. The beach was a good one leo did.
A classic track if everyone could capture a moment to last a life time of mystery
Danny Boyle I admire you Sir. Absolute masterpiece.
It reminds me pandemic in Thailand when I was "stucked" there and It was the most amazing time of my life.
Ive been to Thailand 21 times because of this movie. just one 2 words to say, Thank you x
@Natasha Alicia Tobin ullah If you do, Go to Kho Samet a small island five hrs from Bangkok the closest place to heaven i have ever seen. if you like a beach, Sand like sugar. x
👍Epic!!!
Just a movie as a teen. Now I'm 32 and it might be my favorite movie after rewatching it for the first time in 12+ years. And this song is too good.
💫🥋😉
Pure madness this movie, love that era top of the pops ,drum and bass and a safe London, well kind of!
Me too
First movie I watched when high, just stumbled upon it. Was the early days so it felt like I was in the movie was a trip
Same 💚
Lmao same! Was only like 15, 24 now and this song still hits different 🤣
Lol I forgot about this till I smoked

You are not dead yet. It's never too late. 𝘕𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳.
@@dominysynclair Yes. Very true.
No excuses

listening in December 2020... it is like my new mantra for getting the energy for upcoming year. love it ❤️

This song has a LOT in common with the Grimes album "Art Angels."
I remember Grimes saying that album was super inspired by late 90s/early 00s alternative pop....and you can definitely hear it throughout the album. And this song seems like it was probably a direct inspiration for the sound of Art Angels.
So.....if you like this song, I highly recommend looking up that album! Start with the song Realiti, but NOT the album version, instead watch the music video....which uses the demo version of the song, which is significantly better.
100% brings back what it was to be like when I was younger
I'm glad I was born in 1992
Yeah! Going to Thailand when this movie was released. Pi Pi and the, (quite not as impressive) Maya Beach. Backpackers. Fun people. Horny Brit girls. Fun Times!
Watched this film when I was 8 years old and it really mesmerised me how beautiful the location was and the love scene 😍 12 years later I spent my 21st birthday on The Beach and it was nostalgia and moby on repeat for one week haha was a masterpiece I am so lucky to have experienced a full moon party on the island I had the time of my life ❤
tears in my eyes. parallel universe
Yes, literally! In light of covid ❤️
thats how it ends ;)
true...this is a master peace
Coming closer to you
24 years after seeing this wonderful movie, I am finally going to Thailand. Phuket, koh Phi Phi, Krabi....this has been on my bucket list for so long.
I hope you're having the time of your life in the beautiful Thailand. I can't wait to visit too! And this song sure will be listened to so many times there 😃
Full of Russian and Chinese tourists now, you waited too long
@@ImenBen12 I did have the time of my life. I went to Phuket, Phi Phi, Pan Gha bay and Krabi. I actually did get to Maya Bay, snorkeled with black tip sharks, saw the monkeys and snakes in Krabi, walked Railay and Phranang beach. It was a dream, I recommend Thailand to everyone
@@mancunianinlondon glad you enjoyed it!! Sounds like lots of fun 😃, can't wait to experience it one day!
DiCaprio's most underrated film tbh.
Er hat Garland erlebt.
Makes me feel nostalgic about our youth without all the bs we live today.
Im 34 but I lived in an era without all the tech we have now and realtionships were more down to earth
No song can replace this masterpiece
The music likes running away to somewhere far away and flying above the sky really.
Love this song, lots of nostalgia here for me x
ALL SAINTS(group) still lives in my heart. I love their songs
Still one of the best films ever made
15yrs ago i went to thailand for 1st time and visited koh phi phi (the beach) and my life was permenently changed. To experience such a country and such beauty is transforming. And still i am going there (next month in fact again)

Loved the whole idea of escaping the sweatshops of the 90’s. Where to now? Book summed up an era, this is its themetune. Cheers for this!
I remember this movie. I forgotten about this song until gta v. When they brought this song to the game and remember how nostalgic it sounded. A real beach type music alright
This movie brings back great backpacking memories and makes me want to go travel again!
Before cell phones, social media, and globalization. Life was better in so many ways.
What Jeff said.
2000 was actually peak of modern globalization.
Both cellphones and globalization were already well established...
@@sickrantorum693 You are right, but cellphones back then = dumb-phones. Not those life draining smartphones we know today...
Just watched this movie today for the first time. Wow! What an amazing movie. I'm so glad I watches it because I had it in my watchlist for months and today was the last day before it was removed from Peacock. Legendary movie!🔥🔥🔥

watched this film one week before we went to Thailand for the first time 20 years ago ! the song sooooo takes me back there ! ohhh the good times !!
dude !! same here..

Used to be a proper backpacker , watched this film when it first came out on ko pang Yang . Amazing times!

I love this movie and this song was perfect for the night scene!
32 years ago i travelled Thailand, it was an adventure to reach Ko Chang, Ko Lipe and Ko Tao.
I travelled further down Indonesia, Borneo, Sulawesi and the Philippines especially Palawan, somehow i ended up in Thailand again and did not leave for quite some time, there where all sorts of these travelling communes all over.
