  • Hello Beautiful Humans!
This week I'm finally posting the first in my Claire cosplay series inspired by the costume designs form Outlander. I adored the jacket and skirt capsule wardrobe that Claire spends most of the first season, and second half of season 2 in.
I first started this project around February or march of this year and spent time working on it between other projects while I hunted for the perfect plaids to make my skirts out of. I promised myself to work more out of my stash this year rather than collecting a ton of fabric, which meant that this project was made of wool and linen remnants in my stash. I was elated that I had just enough blue wool in this piece because it is an almost screen accurate match for one of the season 1 jackets.
In and effort to conserve more fabric I also pieced portions of the lining. Wouldn't it be amazing if we could get rid of the modern stigmas surrounding piecing. It saves fabric, cuts down on waste, and can help your pocket book towards affording more costumes!
While I am not sponsored by American Duchess, I have been using their patterns while working on this project. Below are links about the pattern and some of their hacks to get better fit out of the commercial patterns.

My nibling an I laughed when you discovered you'd put the sleeves on the wrong sides, but not to make fun. As they said, it's only because we remember the agony of doing it ourselves. I, too, am rediscovering the joy of hand sewing. Working on my 1870s chemise in linen and doing a lot of hand sewing. I love it! And I'm waiting for part 2 with baited breath.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who has done that with these sleeves and it made you both laugh. I'm glad to remind folks not everything will not be perfect first time.

You're reasoning for getting the pattern is much the same as mine. I want to get into sewing and historical costuming and figured the pattern would be a good way to get into it and then learn to make more HA dress as I go and have the basic foundational sewing skills down.

I'm glad it is helping you too. New time periods can definitely be a little scary

Colorado! Maybe our paths will cross in a meadow or something.

Anything is possible, although our meadows will soon be full of snow!
