100 Years of Underwear // The Changing Plus Size Shape from Regency to Victorian to Edwardian

- What did 100 years of plus size undergarments look like?
In this video, we'll be taking a look at the changing shapes of undergarments, meaning corsets, skirt supports such as hoops and bustles, and petticoats, starting in the 1810s and going through the 1910s. What differences were there from the Regency period to the 1830s? How did skirt shapes evolve throughout the 60 year span of the Victorian era? Is that very different from the Edwardian era and the 1910s?
Although this is going to be modeled by me, a plus size woman, these silhouettes really do remain the same no matter what size you are. I will be sharing my measurements in each type of undergarment, though, both so you can really see the differences in the different eras, and also in the hopes to normalize people of all shapes and sizes.

I absolutely despised that in the Bridgerton series, none of the girls were wearing shifts under their corsets. I actually asked my boyfriend about this, he told me straight up, "There is nothing romantic or hot about a guy opening a girl's corset and finding red inflamed holes in her back where the rivets dug in." So, there's that theory filmmakers and TV show makers have, completely debunked by a guy. Not to mention, OW!!
Speaking of rivets, regency era corsets/stays shouldn't have those either!
Can we all take a moment to appreciate not only the time it must have taken to change clothes that many times but also the piles of clothes she also has to put back just to put out an amazing video for us! Thank you!
Oh my gosh, I love that you said this. Because yes, this video was so intense to film. Doing the footage for this and for the follow-up video with the full ensemble on took me something like 7+ hours.

So THAT is why they use the term "rustling of skirts," because starched petticoats made that sound! That was so surprising and cool! Also, I loved watching this video, seeing someone with a similar frame as me in different historical silhouettes, but also it was just plain fascinating to see the differences! THIS IS WHY we can't just say "1800s outfit" and throw something together, because it changes SO MUCH throughout the period that you have to get specific to the decade (and even the year, like with the early 1820s being relatively regency but late 1820s startling to look more Victorian).
And later towards the end of the 19th century, they went even so far as to have insane silouette changes from one year to the next! We talk about fast fashion today, but considering the intricacy of clothing then vs now and the far longer time it took to make and especially distribute them, late victorians were next level when it comes to fast fashion!
The skills and efforts to have a closet that could turn into a fashion history exhibition, life goals ! You are awesome
Aw, thank you! I made it a goal pretty early on in my costuming journey to have something from each era. It took me about 10 years, but I finally hit that goal!

If you continue comparing different undergarments etc. throughout the years, I would be interested to see a video that showed how the different undergarments changed the ways you would move around, navigate furniture or stairs, bend and sit down: i.e. what postural and/or clothing adjustments you'd have to make.

I'd love to see this too!! I'm not sure how many people know that corsets/stays make you bend at the hips instead of the waist, but I think it'd be an interesting video to see people not just model fashions but actually move and live in them 😁

I love the idea for that video, but I unfortunately have a tiny house with no stairs and extremely modern furniture, so I don't have anywhere to shoot a video like that!

This was BRILLIANT! I am not quite as curvy as you but as a middle-aged person whose body changed shaped DRASTICALLY after our children were born 25+ years ago, your work lets me see how to best adapt my ideas and expectations for the body I have, not the body our society says I "should." This video, in particular, showing a century of gorgeous silhouettes that are determined by (as you say) proportion not size was just what I needed. Almost ready to try making my first corset...

Sew through Time also has a video on 19-teens brassiere, and as she is very well endowed (especially for her size), you can really see just how well they work to support and control the bust.
There’s honestly less movement there than you’d get in a modern sports bra, which is really impressive! Also, she’s another very small CosTuber, so go show her some love! She makes very lovely outfits.

I don't generally like split crotch drawers either...because of the chub rub issue. But I also don't like to fight with putting layers back in place after bathroom usage. Wearing split crotch drawers for me, depends on how long I will be wearing the garments (will potty breaks be necessary while wearing the garments) and the weather (heat and chub rub are the worst).
And I'm glad you mentioned that you used a bed skirt for your petticoat. Those eyelet bedskirts are awesome for a pretty lace ruffle on the bottom of the petticoat.
Yeah, I've found that generally, with the elastic waistbands on my drawers, they're fairly easy to get back in place under the corset, and definitely preferable to chafing!
I seem to have lucked out with split crotch drawers. I don't know if it's because I'm exceptionally bootyliscious, or if I actually need a bigger size (I'm sometimes bigger than Truly Victoria's biggest hip size and didn't bother to scale up because it's just underwear), but the bottom of the open part hits right where my legs meet my body, so my thighs are fully protected from chub rub.
I'm glad I'm not the only one to have done the bedskirt hack. I have two more modern styled pettis made with bedskirt ruffle and I love them!

I didn't know there was a specific name for it and neither did I know what era it was from. The only thing I knew was that is was my great grandmother's.
Thank you for mentioning the names and showing a lot of different undergarments! Every now and then I learn something new in things you mention just briefly.
As I am from Finland, fashion trends historically was a bit delayed before they came here, but how delayed it was, I cannot say. But now I know that the slip can't be older than the 1910s. But it fits really well, as my grandmother was born in the early 1920s and it make sense, concerning the size of the slip, that she would have worn it in her early adulthood, before she got her children. Because if the slip would still have fitted her after becoming a mother, I don't think it would have been so well perserved as it is now. It is in such good condition that I can wear it without need to worry. And it amazes me how well it fits me, as it means, that I am really close to the same size that my great grandmother was, when she was my age.

Even though you’re not wearing all of the undergarments of the time it’s still a lot of clothing! I can’t imagine the laundry that would have to be done in order to keep those petticoats starched and everything clean. Just thinking of what the poor laundress used to go through is enough to make one want to run screaming from the room.
And it was awesome of you to put this video together, it must’ve been an awful lot of work. I mean just taking it off and putting on all of those petticoats and corsets, it must’ve taken forever to film! You must be positively double jointed now after all that reaching around to do up the backs LOL
I would love to watch anything else that you want to put together. I don’t know enough about costuming or period clothing to know what questions to ask or what sort of videos to request but I will watch anything you put out because I really find you fun to watch.

The thing that honestly was the most helpful to me is that a plus size women can look amazing in historical clothing. My measurements are very similar (except the waist, mine is about 10 inches less than yours) and I am not quiet as tall as you are. So I find you just beautyful and find myself more.... you know. So, finding you amazing and my look on myself is now something I have to think about hard...

This is fascinating and helpful, thank you! I thought of a way you could measure your skirts! You could set up a strong light pointing straight down from above you, and put two pattern weights on the floor, and stand beneath the light and push the pattern weights out to the edges of the shadow and then you can step away and measure the diameter! Of course this only works with round skirts... You'd need help to do bustles and so on... it's an idea, though! Hahaha
Just an FYI most places that sell fabric/sewing measuring tapes that generally only go to 60 inches also will sell quilting measuring tapes. They are usually 120 inches long. They cost about 5 dollars US. So if you want a bigger measuring tape search for a quilting one.😊

Congratulations, that was very impressive. I would like to give a suggestion, it would be very helpful if when you showed an oufit, you included an image of the undergarments (since you have already have them) that go with that outfit. I think it would give a much better understandment of how things work in terms of siluette etc. , especially for those of us that aren't very knowlegble.

I had NO IDEA that regency petticoats had shoulder straps! But that makes so much sense since the dresses were not sitting on the waist, then of course you would not want to tie the petticoat around the waist...

What pattern did you use for the split or open drawers that you tried and didn't like because you still got "chub rub"? The fit of drawers is really important; they shouldn't be hanging down loosely away from the body in between the legs. I made mine from Elizabeth Stewart Clark's pattern and it includes a wide facing on the crotch opening that is sewn down to the inside of each leg only at the top so that, when worn, the facing flips up on the inside edge and becomes a panel that completely covers the crotch and inner thighs. The facing on each side overlaps so that it keeps the opening from gapping, and it also provides two extra layers of coverage there. I made mine out of fine cotton and I have worn them without modern underwear underneath, and was completely covered while being able to use the bathroom without having to pull my underthings down and back up underneath my corset. If they were made of soft linen they would be even more comfortable. For me, it's worth it in order to not have to struggle with a waistband under my corset; I can't wear low-waist unders because they don't go up over the fullest part of my belly so they never stay up at all!
I think I used a butterick pattern, so probably not the best!

I have an idea!
Put a tape measure/long tradies ruler horizontally against the wall (tape, blu tac, or those 3M sticker thingies used for hooks) and stand against it so we can see an (approximate) width for your skirts.
Love that three tiered petticoat!

This was such a fun video. I wonder what the weather was like during these eras. The wire cages must have given shade and had a cooling effect during the summer. I think it would be fun to wear something historically correct during the height of tourist season in Dodge City. They have reenactment gun fights during the summer and I think this would be the most fun.

Thank you! Cage crinolines were definitely really freeing for women (so they could get rid of some of those heavy/bulky petticoat layers), and I'm sure it was very cooling too!

I just stumbled upon your channel, but I think you are going to become one of my favorites. I have been wanting to make a corset for a couple decades. Now that I see what a lovely shape it makes for a plus-sized woman (like myself), it makes me want to run out and make a bunch (in various time periods). Your makeup is exquisite; I never did any good at it and to my chagrin I have never found a nice red that complemented my skin tone. Beautiful.

I found this video quite educational! I married into Historical Reenacting, and I had to “frankin” many a garment due to poverty and time constraints. I divorced out of the hobby, but my interest in the fashion only grew . Thanks for all your hard work!

I know that you have your planning for the year done but personally I would love to see you explore things that you've never tried before! Elizabethan era , Rococo , Italian! Men's suite! i have been getting extremely fascinated by old royal families and their dealings/inbreeding/etc, and it has led me to exploring more about the fashions of that time as well, since i am viewing so many portaits. the intersection of subjects is so, so cool to me, and it obviously makes sense, as everything we humans do is connected. love your videos :)

(next time you do a blog-ey type thing, can you tell us what the eye makeup is, I love those pinks on you and want to steal it asap)

An interesting way to show how much space your skirts take up would be a top down shot with you standing in the same spot, you could even mark out on paper some measurements for reference! (Not that I expect you-or anyone-to do this, it sounds difficult) It is one of the ways we photograph collection items for reference- but I've never seen it done with a person.
I think I would need very high ceilings and some sort of special filming rig for that!
