Brice Marden in the Studio

  • Brice Marden continues to make some of the most surprising and ravishing paintings of our time. In the 1960s and 1970s, he was known for matte, monochromatic paintings, often with multiple panels. His 1984 visit to an exhibition of Japanese calligraphy triggered a dramatic shift in style that culminated in a masterful series of gestural paintings and drawings entitled Cold Mountain. Since that time, through several further changes in vocabulary, Marden has continued to explore linear networks as the basis for ambitious, allover abstractions. In this video, recorded in October 2009 in the artist's Manhattan studio, Marden discusses his technique, sources of inspiration, and works in progress with Harry Cooper, curator and head of modern and contemporary art, National Gallery of Art.

    It would be wonderfull to see the paintings in reality - because paintings like these work with all the subtle qualities of multidimensional experience- expression - like investigating life in a very honest and devoting way of being present

    Fun collection of sticks and SU wonderfull mark making - paints are for me like qualities and tones of light and sound and all the lines and matks are like a touching, feeling, imprivizing, moving vibrating rhythm ..... 🎶🧡💙💜🎵

      I respect his work so I disagree and I am very glad he spent his life doing this and not working in a crappy, money grabbing job in an office like so many people do.

      @@chezceleste He worked on a money-grabbing formula and did it to death. Four or five paintings were all that was needed to explore this "vision"...but he had a career to support so had to generate product, and all those art writers don't like to talk about beauty, so...

      @@michael4250 I guess you are a great artist that never got the recognition he deserved...not even the number one Michael...sad sad sad. I love the work of Brice Marden and I wish he had done more and I hope he lives forever because some of the things he has done have blown my mind in a very nice way...why don't you go and do something you like, like playing golf or listening to Tucker Carlson. Get outraged by something that is bad, like climate change, injustice, world hunger, pollution...leave artists alone.

      You keep saying the same thing...no one is listening to you, why don't you stop making a fool of yourself? Why do you want to be outraged? Why don't you watch videos about things you understand and like instead of giving yourself high blood pressure? Why? Why? Why? It's not too late to save your soul.

    • @jonbens64
      @jonbens64 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Mutt1961 Let's not use the "lol" anymore, no one who ever used it was actually laughing out load at the time. I mean it's just so goofy, how'd it ever catch on anyway? One more thing, you're a genuine nitwit.

    • @Mutt1961
      @Mutt1961 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Allow me to assist you. "LOL" is simply a means of expressing the degree to which one finds something humorous or, in this case, ridiculous in a written format. As you state, doubtful anyone has actually laughed out "load," as you put it (which, btw, is likely a perfect description of you). But someone who would rankle at such a petty matter has far greater problems, so I'll oblige you here and refrain from using it. I've probably delayed you taking your meds by reading this, so run along now, nutjob, and have mommy give them to you with your chocky milk...
