Just a side note, he's not chewing gun, is just his way to play the guitar. He does this all the time. See gravity or his latest works with Dead and company, "Greateful Dead". Thanks!

This was a track from the live album Try! Officially by The John Mayer Trio, which features obviously John, but also Steve Jordan on Drums and Pino Palladino on bass, both quite famous musicians in their own right.

I don't know much about John Mayer either, but I do know he has talent. Thanks for bringing my attention to something that I probably wouldn't have otherwise seen.

I know it was odd for a long time guitar teacher/player to not know much about him. When I find someone becomes really trendy, I tend to avoid them. lol. He is talented for sure!

7:15 probably also a contributing factor is the fact he’s using a Dumble SSS. Those are some aggressive amps, plus he has it with his Two Rock Signature. So his tone is huge.

Great post! I've never tried a Dumble.... great tone for sure! :)

I only knew of John Mayer because he sounded like another version of Dave Matthews with his voice. When I worked at Best Buy this was always playing for a while and it blew me away. I had no idea that he could get down like that. I still really don’t know much of his music to be honest.

    • @YesYouCANPlayGuitar
      @YesYouCANPlayGuitar  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes! Dave Matthews!! I hear that as well but just never put it together! I'd like to learn more about him and his music. BTW I also am a man named Briggs...

The pre-Continuum album John Mayer was heavily acoustic and Dave Matthews inspired.
I only arrived after seeing him play Gravity at the Grammys and the Continuum album, which sparked a run of electric blues style playing akin to SRV/BB/Clapton.
I've followed his progress and evolution. And I have to say, following Prince's death, he's now my favourite (living) guitarist and artist. His latest album is an homage to 80s music - "Sob Rock". Wonderful glimpses into a multitude of styles...
And it's that vast musical vocabulary that I love. He can play several styles well and always with a melodic sensibility. When he appears on someone else's album or appears as a guest in concert, you know he's going to turn their gig up to 11.
      He's a real powerhouse nowadays.

Watch where the light is. I was not a John mayer fan. Where the light is made me respect him. Suggestion from that concert, Neon, Bold As love, Gravity, Slow Dancing in a burning room. This song Who did you think i was.

Gravity (Live in L.A) is probably the quintessential John Mayer live performance. But "Changing" from his 2019 tour is a really incredible interesting song (less of a big hit but something he makes very special live).

  • @Johnny5izAlive1

That was actually Band Of Gypsys at the end. Much more influence from Hendrix than SRV..seeing that SRV was hugely influenced by Hendrix as well.
Mayer is a phenomenal blues player. Listen to John Mayer Trio Live At The Bowery Ballroom.

That was far from being a good showcase of his guitar skills..
Watch his Live in L.A. Where the Light Is show.. check out how he plays Gravity for amazing solo or Neon on the acoustic! Or Come When I Call for a blues track. The whole show is seriously a gem! I'd bet anything if you watch the whole show, you'd be a big fan of his forever! 🤘 Cheers

He crushed this performance and I feel you kinda underplayed how much he ripped. How Steve was in the pocket and Pino is literally soloing while John is playing. JM3 for life.

That's not even close to what he can what he can do. Big big blues guy. He used to play with BB king all the time and he's been playing with Dead and Co. for quite a while now. This is his trio, but his solo group stuff is all over the place and it's still it's all gold. Everything he writes is gold no matter what it is.

I'm with you on the SRV influence at that stage of his career. He's one of the few who has been improving his craft despite huge success. His playing with The Grateful Dead has added a real extra dynamic to his playing. Try this very recent release - th-cam.com/video/yT8SYItNvKg/w-d-xo.html. It is an alternate version of the lead single from his latest album. Gives him room to manoeuvre.

After watching The Purple GOD Prince play guitar, its almost painful to watch anybody else play the guitar lol, Nobody past or present has the Swag, the Shomanship, Stage presence, The Vocals, The moves, and the Godly like guitar playing all in one package like Prince, plus who could play with majestic flow any Genre. The other greats were too 1 dimensional. Prince the GOAT!!!!!!!!!!

I just remembered that John Mayer did a tribute to Prince when he passed. So I googled it. Apparently he has covered Prince quite a few times. An acoustic cover of Little Red Corvette was not bad.
