      This is awesome, i would love to learn more about the relationship native peoples had with the mushrooms of this beautiful land over thousands of years. Like most things, I'm sure a lot of incredible insight has been lost. Such a tragedy.

    Adam, here in The Berkshires it has been very dry this year so I humped buckets of water out to my best maitake oak tree for the last week of Aug./1st week of Sept. - of the 5 oaks I know can produce Hens this was the only one that did well - 9 Hens each over 4 or 5 pounds! I have 4 food saver bags full in the freezer (it freezes very well), 3 huge jars pickled with black trumpets.
    Watering works!

      I just found an oak tree with eight hens on it! One was mature and ready to harvest, the others are still babies. We haven’t had any rain for several days, and no rain in the forecast for several more, I was thinking of bringing water to wet the soil so the baby hens don’t dry out and get ruined, but I wasn’t sure if that would help or not 🤷🏼‍♀️ Then I read your comment and thought maybe it wasn’t such a strange idea 😂

    Started this foraging journey in mid-March 2020. Morels were the only thing on my radar....then by accident, I discovered Chanterelles in early August. That made me look harder at what might be out there---that along with your videos has put me back in the woods on a weekly basis for the first time since the late-80's, early 90's. The woods any time of year, but especially this time of year, detox the soul. 3 days ago we found our first Maitakes and they just might be my favorite. I recently turned 45 and forage alone, but much of the time I am out with 2 old high school friends. You have been a point of reference for all 3 of us. I hope you understand the positive impact you are having. Cheers

    Hi Adam. Love your website. My only wish would be for you to visit Colorado some year and walk the woods talking about what can be found there. Next spring/summer can we expect the mycelium to have survived all our wildfires this fall, and produce mushrooms again, or will the forests need to be repopulated? Any advice as to something we should try to do? Try to get some spores/fresh mycelium to plant? It's been so hot and dry here the last few years, I'm not terribly optimistic.
    Also, the mountains around Santa Fe are filled with many diverse shrooms during the monsoon season. You'd love it.

      it'a almost too easy.... clean it (them), slice em up and dehydrate. There's absolutely nothing to it. I dehydrate them at 100 deg. F. for as long as it takes to get them cracker crisp..

    • @angrylittlespider_9701
      @angrylittlespider_9701 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! Very easy to dehydrate. I like pulverizing them, then add to soups, gravy, etc. Since they are so plentiful--let's face it they're HUGE--There are usually enough to try in just about every other way you'd use any other mushroom as well.

    What is your favorite way to prepare your Hens? I've gotten several pounds of "cleaned" mushroom and looking for recipes to try out.

      Fry small sections in olive oil or bacon drippings until starting to crisp around edges,add some minced garlic and fresh thyme.
      Great on sourdough toast,perhaps with a fried egg on top

    There's maitakes in my back woods, can you recommend a cleaning technique for them?

    • @blenderbenderguy
      @blenderbenderguy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If they're fresh and in good shape they are relatively stout and can take a good strong hosing to remove the big stuff such as dirt, grass, pine straw, etc. I blast mine with full setting on nozzle. Unless they are really gritty and full of ingrown grass & weeds, this cleans em up enough to bring into kitchen. I break apart into smaller pieces and just rinse under running water. Maitake do not absorb water like lots of other mushrooms and are easy to get to clean up.

      @@blenderbenderguy Thanks for the tips, it's good to know they aren't absorbent like CotW.

    okay, so I found about same size of the Maitake and I tried to fry it but turn out very tough and absolutely not edible.
    Can you tell me why? Thank you.

    We have an old white oak right next to our house that usually grows one or two hens every year. I haven't seen them yet this year, even with all the rain we have had recently... I hope they will come up, but we do still have some dehydrated mitake from 2 years ago.

    Speaking of mushrooms I wonder whycum they don't make motor oil fluorescent blue so you can see better on the dip stick?

    I grew up in Western MARYLAND. I'm guessing you are south west of PITTSBURGH. Every time I watch your videos I feel at home. After all were on the same mountain range and less than a hundred miles apart.

    I got pulled over after foraging one day. The maitakes I had were so dank the cop didn’t believe there wasn’t weed in the car. After an hour of searching he apologized and just wrote me a warning for speeding. I wasn’t even mad, just amused.

    Adam it is because of you that I started looking for edible mushrooms in my woods. This fall I have found five different kinds of mushrooms that are edible.
    My problem is.... I’m afraid to try them. I know the usual route is start very small, never raw. The usual way I cook store-bought mushrooms is to slice them and sauté in olive oil. I suppose I could do that with the wild ones I find. I hope you or another commenter can suggest a way to go.

    I wish you had some PNW videos!
    Maybe Astoria area so you can teach people how not to pick posionous mushrooms while hunting for psilocybin containing ones ... We have poisonings over here every once in a while because people hunt for Azurescens and pick Galerina instead
