Thank you for mentioning the heartworm and flea and tick prevention! I work for a vet and people don’t think indoor cats need preventions but they are OH SO WRONG. Where as dogs can have hundreds of heart worms and it will damage their heart and shorten their lives, it only takes ONE heartworm to kill a cat. Thank you for addressing the importance of preventions! 🙏🏻♥️

My Maine Coon Chester weighed 26 pounds when I got him at 7 years old. Vet said he could benefit from losing a few pounds, so I began giving him several small meals a day instead of keeping his bowl full all the time. He now weighs a slimmer 20 pounds, so I know that tip about small meals works.

Times are ruff. I have two cats and both have been my best friends since they were baby kittens. They are 14 and 15 years old now. The first one I got is so smart loving. Beginning this year she was tested with early kidney failure. So now yeah I've worrying alot about her. Her number one focus is water and give her as much as she wants even add it to dry food. Unfortunately I'm still alone at my age and not quite sure how I'm gonna cope when I have to put her to sleep. Honestly feel ruined even thinking about it. They have been my best friends through all the bad the only ones who been by my side 💯

Before Whiskers, I'd never had a cat so for the first two years since his arrival, I was a worry wart but thank God for my neighbor. He helped tremendously in letting go of that anxiety. Now, I just allow my whiskers to be himself and follow his rhythm. We both are happier about it ❤😊

I need to think about moving my girls litter box out of the front closet. It's pretty enclosed and also near the front door/hallway (I live in an apartment complex). I thought that was the best place but after watching this video, maybe it's not? Thank you. Also, I appreciated and felt a little emotional when you mentioned taking care of ourselves for our cats. I've been struggling with a severe major depressive episode and I needed to hear that today. I always take care of them but I don't always take such good care of myself. Thank you.

Two other things to avoid hurting your cat are getting teeth check-ups/ brushing and not making sure the plants you have in your home are safe. Common plants like lilies can easily kill a cat and many people have no idea

Exactly, overfeeding can be such an issue. My cats used to live in a household with multiple feeders and they ended up weighing a bit more than they should -- we reduced the meal time and even packed the daily food to limit the food intake and feed the cats multiple meals a day. Good thing they are not good at accounting how much they are eating and lost the weight really quickly.

I’d like to echo what others have said about researching cat-friendly vs harmful plants to have in the home with the cat.
Also, when cats get older, I’d think about having their teeth checked more deeply than just a visual inspection. Our elder cat had to have some teeth extracted due to abscesses that were only caught after 1) we noticed her eating patterns were changing 2) she would drop more food when she would eat, and 3) dental x-rays
I never had an elderly cat before and it isn’t common knowledge to get their teeth cleaned and looked at (apart from a visual check at their yearly vet visit). I wanted to make a comment so others may know, too.
Thank you always for sharing such insightful and helpful videos! 💜

I would add not paying attention to what’s going on (or not!) in the litter box. If your cat is either not peeing as usual, like either not peeing as frequently, or peeing too long, it could mean a UTI or cystitis. Different colored or density of poop could also mean a medical issue. Yes, we want to give our cats privacy when they go, but being aware of their habit and end product is important.

You could also ( I don't do it myself because I give them wet food ) but you can add some bone broth to the dry food but make sure it doesn't have any onions or garlic in it.

    • @AllAboutCatsYT
      @AllAboutCatsYT  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

Yes, that's a good tip! Just remember that bone broth tends to be mineral-rich, so you may want to consult your vet if your cat has any health issues that may make this a problem.

I use a lot of white vinegar for cleaning. My two cats eat mostly fresh chicken thighs and raw ground beef. Once a week a tin of sardines on Sardine Sunday. They get a wet cat food that is 3% carbs and low in calcium and phosphorus. They drink a lot of water out of a wide, shallow Corelle baking dish. Since most cats (61%) are overweight, people think mine are too thin.

I accidentally shut my cat in a closet the other day and felt so guilty. I never heard her meow to get out (but she wasn't feeling all that well which is why she went in there to begin with). In all honestly I did look at the floor before I closed the door but I missed her as she was on top of a box I slid in there.

Don't understand why letting your cat outside unsupervised isn't on the list given the average lifespan of cats allowed outdoors unsupervised is significantly shorter than indoor-only cats or cats with catios &/or who are harness-trained.
The most harmful thing I've ever done to my cats is naively give them unrestricted access outside via a doggy door.
After my 3rd cat returned from an outdoor adventure one day with a broken jaw, I did a lot of research and ended up nailing the darn thing closed.
I was very lucky he came back at all and I see tons of Reddit posts from worried or heartbroken cat guardians whose cats have gone missing, were injured, or... worse.
Letting cats out unsupervised (anywhere where other humans exist) is one of the most dangerous yet normalized habits across the globe.
Also, how did "putting your cat in stressful situations for cute pics &/or Internet points" not make the list?
I wish there was a TH-cam channel where people could find and enjoy funny/cute videos that have already been vetted (to filter out any that depict a cat/kitten being antagonized, needing help, etc.).

No cat should ever be allowed to run loose outdoors anymore than a dog. Where I live which is a medium sized city we have regular reports with video of coyotes an bobcats prowling around looking for food. Sadly a lot of people in thier cars are even worse than the hungry animals.

@@sh8736 As long as a cat has access to toys, cat furniture, and lots of areas to climb, they’re fine. And if you can build a catio, hey, lucky you. And even luckier cat.
IKEA has very attractive shelves to match any decor that are a great size for cats, and you can put them where cats can climb them from their cat furniture. There are all kinds of toys to keep kitty busy, and cat food bowls where cats will need to actively use their minds and their prey drive to get to the food/treats. I got my shelving dirt cheap, and I have a relatively inexpensive cat tower. I have a box full of toys for my cats. Even if you live in an apartment, as long as cats have access to a window (cat TV), a good variety of cat toys, and can explore vertically, they’ll be just fine.
If you have an empty house with no stimulation for your cat, @sh8736, then YOU’RE the problem, not the inability for said cat to go outdoors.

Really good! I follow all of these practices. One I missed, however, was stress. I've been working on a big project and my house is torn up because of it. My cat developed diahrrea, caused by the stress of having her entire life upended. I never realized how much cats like things to be predictable and hate having their environment messed with. The project will be over tomorrow, so I'll be quickly putting my home back in order the way she likes it. I learned a lesson here. Introduce changes gradually and not too many at one time. Give her time to get used to each change, whether physical surroundings or a change in the daily schedule (mine or hers.) She's super-sensitive to all sorts of changes. Thank you for this great video!!

I have had my big boy for 7 years, he’s 10 now. For many years I have kept only cat safe plants, but he never showed any interest in plants AT ALL. During the first wave of COVID, I decided I wanted to get some tropical plants finally, reasoning that he has never gotten into any plants, so it should be fine. Sure enough one day he ate a huge toxic leaf and I FREAKED out. Thankfully he barfed it up and that was the end of that, but we could have had a way worse outcome. Back to safe plants now!

Thanks for this video. It served me as a check on how I treat my cat, and I guess I’m doing pretty good! The one thing I do that varies from your recommendation is I do try to brush him daily. He’s a long hair and he’s quite prone to hair balls if I don’t brush him frequently. He actually likes to be brushed and I keep each brushing brief. He’ll let me know when he’s had enough! On another point, I bought a water fountain for my cat a few months ago and he totally ignored it. 😮 I finally put it back in the box and I’ll donate it to a local rescue organization. Oh, well.

    • @PrimeObserver-1
      @PrimeObserver-1 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

I also took exception to the brushing recommendations, because my 2 Tuxies actually demand to be brushed 3 or more times a day. Maybe that is because my brushing is more of a massage with a cat "zoom groom"? At any rate, they determine their grooming & want it more, not less.

I know it's not a financial option for everyone, but we managed to take care of several cat problems with one fix, and that was moving to wet food only diet. I have 2 boy cats, who both just started getting UTIs after they turned 5. One was VERY over weight, so we decided to make the move to high protein wet food only diet...it's been almost 8 years with zero UTIs and also the one that was overweight is down to normal weight levels and so much more active and happy. It really does make a difference!

@@alisong2328 oh yeah...I make sure to feed them plenty of treats that are crunchy (here you can get ones that are good for dental health supposedly) also I DO try to brush the kitty teeth. But one cat really likes the toothbrushing and the other one doesn't love it, so that' a sometimes..but it DOES happen. Also they sometimes successfully hunt dog kibble...but yes, that's a great point, they NEED the crunch factor in their food intake.

That last one is really what's tripping me up the most. I lost a cat suddenly a few years ago due to missed symptoms of kidney disease as I did not know any better then. As a result, I am now hypervigilant about everything that my remaining cats do. This led to me somehow convincing myself that they are dying the moment I see anything out of the ordinary, and I can only guess that this stresses them out too.

My biggest thing is the worry. We have two lads. One with FIV (and goodness do I watch him closely) and the other who. . . has some fussy eating habits. Even though our fussy eater maintains his weight, I definitely fuss over his calorie intake. . .its rough having a cat that routinely skips a meal or only eats partials. I have them down for 210 calories a day. . .he probably only eats about 150-170 on a GOOD day. I'm always happy now if he manages to finished at least two of his three daily meals. But. . .according to the vet. . .he's healthy, his weight is perfect. . .I'm hoping an eventual meal upgrade will help with that.. .but we'll see.

I think a LOT of people are TOO LOUD around their animals. Cats in particular respond very well to a quiet environment. Instead of "OH LOOK AT YOU, YOU FLUFFY WUFFY WITTLE KITTY CAT!" smothering it with pets, you could be completely silent, yawn, look away from the cat, then offer an under-handed, one-finger scratch under the chin. One is an insane overload to their senses, while the latter presents yourself in a very passive, non-threatening manner.

3:24...alot of cats, don't like large bowls...cause the food goes stale.
    5:47... I brush my cats 2x a day...cause its relaxing for them.
8:30... I use to worry alot , when i go for enrichment walks in the neighbourhood , with my cats....I am always on the lookout for foxes, coyotes, and even hawks and eagles...

Cats can be mentally hurt by being locked indoors their whole life. Anyone that has had an outdoors cat sees immediately the difference. If you can't let your cat outdoors due to location, weekly take the cat for a walk in the park. They need the mental stimulation a wild environment provides, even if it is only in the back yard.

Catbox needs to be big enough = big yes. My biggest worry - If I am wearing boots, or even just tennis shoes ...that could destroy a paw. To combat this I have some overstuffed slippers that I wear around the house in the morning. This gives the cat a big padded bumper when she is trying to trip me to demonstrate her "great love".

I have told people that look at me like I'm obsessive compulsive that I have cats and they walk where they walk and bring in God knows what on their shoes and then lick their paws...plus they sleep with me! WHY is this so hard for people to get and why don't they care?

I too am a germophobe! Since I took a microbiology class for Nursing school. We had to culture 5 'things' to grow. The biggest, nastiest petri dish that grew the lid off the dish was the culture of my sandle. Where the strap was inserted into the sole. OH MY GOD! IT WAS LIKE A FURRY GROSS CRITTER! That was the day I stopped wearing shoes in the house. No one can wear shoes in my house. Prove them wrong. Buy two Petri dishes with nutrient agar. On one, touch your cat's hind paw after using the litter box. On the other, touch your cat's front paw after coming inside (it's an outdoor cat?). Then wait 4-6 days, and see what happens.

I noticed my cat had put on a little too much weight (I'm turning into my Italian mother, trying to show love via food!). I didn't really make her wait (no pun🤦🏻‍♀️) longer, I would pay more attention to portion sizes. She was never "grossly" overweight, just needed to cut back a bit. I'd still give her treats, but fewer and not as often. I'd cut down the amount of spoons of food I gave her from her cat food. I think the fact that, in the southern hemisphere, we're going from winter towards summer also helped, but she is at a more healthy looking size now.

Multi-cat household here. We refrain entirely using any store bought cleaners. Floors and counters use various combinations of water, vinegar, baking soda and lemon juice made up in-house. Only store bought pet safe enzymatic cleaner is used for cleaning up pukes. Also, no one sets foot in the house with shoes, they stay in the garage. Washing your hands after coming home and before touching your cats also helps to avoid dragging in unwanted bugs. I also use Hepa filter air purifiers in the rooms with their litter boxes to cut down on airborne dust.

The worst is betting her into her carrier. She hates going out and it's always a struggle with her growling at me. The other thing is strangers coming into the house but I can't control that at times.

Okay confession time: 😳 So I suffer from anxiety and OCD [getting therapy and meds]. I'm constantly washing my hands and trying not to obsess about my kitty's paws whenever he poops and then walks around the floor/carpet. Even with the most gentle touch, it pains him when I wipe his paws down with a warm diluted baby wipe [lots of poop in those hind paws!] 😢I can't help it, and I live in a studio apartment with not much room for moving his large clean litter box around. Anyone else go through something similar? I love my little guy, Kit Cobain, and I have a great relationship with him, I haven't bathed him yet, he's very clean on his own. ❤
As for this video, great points made, especially the last one, definitely needed to hear that 👍.
Finally, I do worry about his diet. He is 6mos old and weighed in at 9lbs 12oz!!! when I got him neutered this month. Am I overfeeding him? He was a stray/rescue and I'm weaning him off dry and so he gets 1/4 cup with a single tub of FF petites and a delectable three times a day. The feeding instructions Purina puts on the food are insane to me! He's 💯 indoor but active all day, very muscular [see my pic] I just don't know what to do about this 🤷🏻‍♀️😊

Grooming: I have one cat who only likes to be brushed on top areas and another for whom ANYTHING GOES, WOMAN! ANYTHING!
Both get offended if I don't have time to brush them daily. However, I let them tell me when to stop (usually around ten minutes for one and twenty for the other.) They both adore the Kong Zoom brush and I like its safety factor. Once hit an eye and the cat pawed at it for a minute but seemed unfased about it less than five minutes later.
