      Drivers are too selfish here. People would riot if we had German style photo enforcement: Instant $100 1 point infraction for following less than 1s behind a vehicle. Automatic 1 month license suspension and $250 fine if less than .5s. Instant $80 fine for undertaking (passing on right) OR not keeping right except to pass or let faster traffic pass (20 second tolerance). When speed is restricted, $100 fine at 12mph over; 1 month license suspension at 18 mph over.
      Legally driving 150mph+ requires a bit of drive and road maintainer responsibility.

    The problem is people don't know how to use the lanes.
    In the UK it's keep in left lane unless your over taking, and then get back in left lane once you've over taken car in front.
    Problem is to many people don't understand something so simple and stay in the wrong lane causing issues for others.

    Great stuff, Don!
    Something that always drives me nuts is the stop/go attempt to regulate on-ramps. You’re just burning more fuel sitting and creeping at idle, and all the traffic lights are doing is trying to mask and overcomplicate the fundamental problem: people who struggle with confidence merging.
    What if, instead, we took a page from the “meatball” on an aircraft carrier and the sequential lighting of a runway?
    What if we had sequential lights that flashed from slow to faster speeds as you progress down the on-ramp in such a way that, all you have to do to match merging speed is to keep the current light in your driver’s side window lit?
    It’s the same effect as when you record a helicopter on camera, and the blades rotate at the same frequency as the frame rate, making it look like the blades aren’t spinning.
    This approach would instantaneously communicate to a driver if they’re going fast enough to merge, and from there, all they have to do is check their blind spot on their left, adjust acceleration slightly not to kill the guy who’s occupying the spot you’re set to merge, and you’re not bogging down traffic 2-3 miles behind you as you try to juggle calculus subconsciously.

    • @cmmartti
      @cmmartti 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You fundamentally misunderstand the problem ramp metering solves, which is that surface traffic tends to clump at intersections, and when a clump of cars tries to merge onto an at- or near-capacity freeway, it introduces waves of conflict, which causes people to slow down or come to a grinding halt. Ramp metering breaks apart the clumps and lessens the merging conflicts and allows traffic to flow smoothly.

    Clearly Don is an American. The speed limit by lane is a thing here in Central Europe. It is not the lower limit though, but the upper limit. But to solve traffic, you need a good, efficient and convenient public transit system. Not 5 lanes in each direction.

      @Volkbrecht 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @erikziak1249 - Yes, Don's talking about Los Angeles California. While your public transit idea is nice, realize that California- which isn't even the largest US state- is larger than approximately 45 European countries. Please tell me how to have a nice, efficient public transit system with that huge of a scale. Additionally, LA does have a public transit system just for the city- but It just becomes another bureaucratic nightmare to complain about.

    • @zockertwins
      @zockertwins 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@ChaimS I can take the train from Lissabon, Portugal to Danzig, Poland and I will have a better train infrastructure on every single kilometer of that 3300km journey than I will have anywhere in California, a state that is not even half as long north to south. The size of a country has nothig to do with how possible it is to build good transportation infrastructure. There is an excellent video about this topic called "The Dumbest Excuse for Bad Cities" by Not Just Bikes. I implore you to watch it with an open mind. The American transportation infrastructure really can be improved, and *everyone* would benefit from it.

    • @Rattlehead-gy9ct
      @Rattlehead-gy9ct 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@zockertwins The infrastructure gets split up into a few different countries there. yes, they'll work together for scale and logistics, but the issues of funding and construction are still split between the various powers involved. Can't do that in the U.S., the whole thing (nationwide) would fall under the DOT, which can't fix a fucking pothole. If you're going to limit it to states/cities, then you run into the same scale issues. Ukraine is the largest country in Europe and it is *almost* the size of Texas. Combine that with the fact that everything in the U.S. is very spread out, and you have the problem that the train would have to stop every 15 feet because of the way houses are built here.

    • @zockertwins
      @zockertwins 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Rattlehead-gy9ct If the whole infrastructure is split up into the responsibilities of many different countries, does that not create standardization issues, responsibility issues and language and cultural barriers that make it harder to build a common infrastructure system? Funding a project is a lot easier when economically well-developed regions and less developed regions are working together as one nation instead of having to build many national transportation systems like in Europe. Let's look at an example that is on the same scale in Europe and the US: I want to go from Fort Worth to Dallas in the US and from Rotterdam to The Hague in Europe. If I go by car, it's a 30 to 40 minute trip in both cases, so the distances are similar. If I go by train, it's a 1 hour trip with a train that departs every hour in the US and a 30 minute trip with trains departing every 15 minutes in Europe. Is that because the rest of Texas is larger than the Netherlands? I don't see how that would be onnected in any way. The reason the DOT has not built a better train connection between Fort Worth and Dallas is not that it's not possible, but it is precisely the DOT is spending all its money trying to fix all the potholes from the millions of miles of roads and millions of cars that infest american cities _precisely because there is no functioning public transport_ . Transporting 100k people into and out of a city every day is many times cheaper, more space and time efficient and better for the health of the commuter with trains than with cars.

    two problems with your "allocate by minimum speed" idea -- first, there also needs to be a maximum that allows just a little overlap to the next faster lane. You don't want the high score driver in the right lane. Second, those speeds need to be variable based on two things: following distance (you have no business going fast if you don't leave room in front to react) and traffic over the next 2 miles (no need to pack traffic into a slow area. These changes would make it more effective and safe. It's 2024, we have the technology to make it work. I also think adding a new set of "spacer pacer" lights to help with the merge gaps would be handy...Yes, these are ideas I've already considered.
