I remember my older brother playing guess who albums on our console every morning before I went to elementary school. 6 years old and singing the songs on my way to school.

I was front and center - a senior - we were seated by our Homeroom assignment. My last name starts with "C" so I was in the the 2nd or 3rd class to go in, I had the best seat in the house! Our alumni committee has a film copy of the entire show, they show it at the reunions for the Class of '73.
Lots of kids skipped out that day after lunch thinking it was going to be something lame - the joke was on them. We could peak into the gym throughout the morning and see the stage and equipment being assembled, it was obvious there was going to be a concert of some type, but we NEVER thought it would be an A-list, national act like that. Even the teachers were kept in the dark about what the act was going to be. When the Emcee announced "Please welcome... The Guess Who!" the place went nuts. Burton Cummings took the stage and it was ON. (It's been rumored that some kids went out to their cars or snuck across the street behind the Jehovah's Witness building and smoked marijuana before the event, but that has never been proven, and I'll deny it to my grave)
The Guess Who were at the top of the heap at the time of this concert. They played for 2 hours and just blew the room away.
50 years ago, and when I see the faces of my classmates now it takes me right back. What an awesome thing to have been a part of, and such a great memory. Thank you for posting.

I was there. It was my junior year at Council Rock. This was the first and only rock concert I ever went to as a kid. I seem to remember the student council begging the school administration for a rock concert, which they never agreed to, until one day we heard we were going to have a secret school assembly. We had no idea what it was going to be. I, with a couple friends of mine, managed to take a peek ahead of time into the our big gymnasium where the assembly was going to be. All I remember were the huge speakers and wondering, "What in the world is going on?!"
I was about half way up on the left side of the stands looking from the stage. I was so naive. The announcer walked out onto the stage and announced, "The Guess Who!" I thought, "The guess who? I have no idea. What are you talking about?" Seriously, that is what went through my mind. The one song I remember and recognized from the radio was "American Woman." I also remember the cameras zipping around us controlled on long zip lines, or whatever. That was why I wondered whether there might just be a video of the concert on TH-cam. Well, what do you know! Wow! It brings back memories! I had never seen anything like it. There must have been a lot of kids there in the same boat I was in. How many times do people find themselves in a rock concert that they had no idea they were in for? Well that was me 50 years ago. Its hard to believe.

Was there. In bleachers IN THE GYMNASIUM as a sophomore (Hi, Susan!). I think it was in May of 1973. Looked in Chancellor Yearbook for 1973 and there is nothing there, but I think the yearbook had already been printed, or was at the printers. And the announcer was correct, we all thought the assembly was for something stupid, or we were there to be scolded about one of the many pranks we used to pull (IE. cherry bomb in john, entire school walkout in a protest for something I don't even remember). That was a day I will never forget. Thank you for posting this.

Thanks for posting this Tracy! I was there, somewhere in those bleachers, 15 years old, a sophomore at Council Rock. There had been buzz about what was going to happen that entire day, but no one knew until the band was introduced. No cell phones, no one tweeting or texting or recording it, just everyone very much there in the moment. What a wonderful memory!

For those only familiar with the band in passing, the line-up here is Burton Cummings (vocals, keys), Garry Peterson (drums), Kurt Winter (lead guitar), Bill Wallace (bass), and Donnie McDougall (guitar). I'm surprised there are no "Where's Randy?" comments. 🙂
What a rush, to be one of the kids who were recruited to play horns behind The Guess Who on "Just Let Me Sing." Wow.
