At 22 Gilly wasn't keeping for his State Team as Phil Emery was the incumbent in NSW. It wasn't until he moved to Western Australia that he got to keep at Shield level. 96 saw him selected for Aus A. 97-98 he was Aus one Day keeper and Test Debut in 99. BTW 1st test 96-97 Series when some were calling for Healy to be replaced Healy scored 161 no in the 1st Test against the Windies to set up the Aussies win.
Heals was and is an absolute legend, however it wasnt just heals who wanted to stay, the Australian public didn't want to see him go either. Gilly got boo'd by the aussie crowd when he first walked on after finally replacing Heals. The same way heals got bood for replacing Rod Marsh, aussies love their keepers and hate to see change.

Great innings by Gilchrist. Pakistanis were appealing for every ball for no reason and were turned down for couple of legitimate appeals. Waqar had no business to play test match during this time. His pace was gone. He couldn't bowl to left handers. He had one good spell in the entire series.
