There are many countries where mandatory spelling exists.
The French Academy makes spelling virtually mandatory, as I understand.

@@richbabushka2752 If by some chance French spelling did change I would just go on reading French novels and so on written before the change. But I'm very, very glad this was a joke. By the way, April fool's jokes made in some partsof the world on TH-cam don't reach other parts of the world until the next day, or at least after midday on 1st April, when such jokes become invalid.
I live in the US. I was ENVIOUS that the French could get consensus on language usage. ððð
TH-cam put this in my feed but of course the date shown of it is just "2 weeks ago", so I was completely taken in! Good one - though I would have liked it, it does seem inconceivable that the good people of France would give the Belgians and Swiss such a victory!

I sometimes jokingly call my wife the '99' character from Get Smart but in French though, it's a hoot. "Missed me by THAT much, Quatre-vingt-dix-neuf!!" But you have to be of a certain age to appreciate that... :D

Because for me as a Spanish speaker, it doesn't make sense there exist letters that aren't pronounced until I realized it was a joke. Lucky me, I could erase the pictures I sent to my friend before she started to make fun of me, hahaha.

Comme on! In Spanish there are also silent letters: "h", "u" after "q", "u" between "g" and "e" as well as "u" between "g" and "i". "S" is silent in several/many countries as well as in regions of several countries. Other letters can be silent depending on the Spanish variety.

I did two years of French 30 years ago, and the fact that I could understand it quite well is a testament to Elisaâs clear speaking and well-chosen words.

Mais apprendre quelque chose et le changer fait partie du cycle de la vie, aprÃĻs tout, la vie est dynamique. Aujourd'hui encore, j'utilise "raÃz" e "idÃĐia" mais je sais que ces mots n'ont plus d'accents. Je suis heureuse de savoir que cela facilite la tÃĒche de ceux qui veulent apprendre le portugais, notamment pour pouvoir transcrire ce qu'ils entendent sans en enlever le sens et la signification.

I've been learning French for many years and I always get stuck on extremely difficult grammar and spelling rules. I wish this reform was actually done. It would attract so many people to start learning French.
As a Spanish native speaker who studied French in middle-school 20 years ago, I actually would be confused with this reform, it would be so radical XD
@@azarishiba2559 I agree. I think spelling le chat helps me remember it is cat because of the silent 't'. The silent letters often make the word look more similar to the English, which makes it easier to remember.

I almost had a heart attack lol. I have a minor in French from my undergrad. I signed up for new French courses to stay up to date ð. Glad itâs not changing but Iâll keep the French courses anyway. Glad I understood everything that was said through voice and text!

Brava! An April Fool joke prepared that seriously and professionally.
Watching that on April 9th, I was suspecting from the beginning that it was from April 1, but when it came to the cancellation of liaisons - that was a joke 100%. All the proposed spelling simplification and the Swiss numerals are reforms theoretically possible, but you cannot cancel the liaisons that people actually pronounce.

I'm not a subscriber and don't speak any French but I watch a lot of other linguistics videos (though none on French, and mostly in Asian languages) and had this recommended in my feed, on April 14th. I was so confused watching this since I didn't expect to be recommended an April Fools video from a channel I never heard of before, 2 weeks after the 1st LOL. So I didn't even scroll down to see the upload date until like half way through the video haha... It was entertaining though so I don't regret watching anyway!

(I'm not French) it might look difficult but it's actually so smart et utile. When you've learnt it, it would be a nightmare just to imagine using French without this system of writing.

As a native English speaker who understands French, German, Latin, Russian and Spanish (among others), I'd say that even without all the gender, number and casing rules present in these other languages, English is by far the most difficult language of the Indo-European language family to master, particularly spelling-the orthography is horrific in comparison!
I was so looking forward to learning these new spellings as a future translator, even though it was weird I was not aware of any new reforms... I even saved the video so that I could share this to some foreign students. Poor me, I fell for it lmao

I used to be fluent in French 20 years ago, but quickly forgot it. I was, however, able to understand most of the video with French subtitles.

I had a similar idea some time ago, but the goal was kinda different: to see whether the extra things in the script that are not in the speech really are redundant and whether there aren't really cases when a written text could be incorrectly understood when read. The base rule was similar - the same pronunciation means the same set of letters used. Although I tried to stay with the original pronunciation rules, so a pronounced consonant at the end had to be doubled (je chantt) and the "revieved" consonants were extra attached (vou'z Êtt). So "plus" could be actually written 3 different ways with "plu'z en plu" and "j n sÊ pa pluss". :)

Place au patrimoine des cultures anglo et franquiste exprimÃĐ dans nos langues respectives!
J'ai 73 ans. J'ai ÃĐtÃĐ ravi de constater que l'expression plutÃīt maladroite de soixante-treize ans est remplacÃĐe par une façon beaucoup plus logique d'exprimer le nombre. Mais je n'ai vu cette vidÃĐo que quelques semaines aprÃĻs le 1er avril, et votre blague m'a donc complÃĻtement pris par surprise.
