One of the best tutorials on vibrato that I’ve watched. Also learnt other useful tips as well. Thanks

Excellent points! Vibrato truly IS a complex issue to tackle because everything else in the voice has to be functioning well first.

Are you reworking that skeletons cover? I hear parts in those instrumental bits that I don't remember
Anyways, I think this is one of your best videos here. I found whenever I did vibrato exercises, they only unlocked whatever range I could do it and whatever speed I was ready for. And they had to involve changing the pitch, I intuitively knew that the exercises only pulsing volume were incorrect, I avoided them like the plague. I first started getting vibrato around the G3-C4 area using the good vibrato exercises.. Around E4-G4 is currently the hardest range for me to achieve vibrato so I will have to really work on messa di voce there. Do you find many students have trouble with vibrato in their low range? I have troubles with that too.

Hi +Owen Korzec actually I'm changing that cover into my own original - all I had to do was remove the bassline because that was the only thing that was in common with Stevie's track :-P I will work my own vocal melody over this version and it will be an original song.
As for low range (or any part of the range) - only if the voice is tight. This goes into the stuff we were working on last lesson.

Great stuff as usual Phil. My experience is exactly the same with the vibrato only working properly if I'm floating freely on a note.
I'm curious, has the ability to do messa di voce also been mainly a by product of overall vocal ability for you, or have you found it helpful to really spend significant amounts of time doing it as an exercise?

Hi +rustyfo1 Doing it as an exercise speeds up your ability to sing freely. It is considered an advanced exercise however I have even beginners doing it in their comfortable range. It is a necessary skill to sing well.

Cool thx for the quick reply.
If I'm honest I've mostly been playing around with it in more of willy nilly fashion whilst practicing songs. Will start devoting some more focused attention to it then!

Lol two years ago I was doing those exercises that go aahhAAHHaaaAHHH. It doesn't really work haha. The only the thing that has worked for me unlocking freedom in the voice.

i like your videos a lot. I'm a bit confused about 'support' though, I understand that there should be tension down lower to support the sound, is it sort of and expanding feeling below the rib cage? I've heard that if you have the wrong kind of tension in the abs that that will cause directly related tension in the larynx /throat. My approach so far is very scientific, can you shed and light what support feels like when done correctly? My pitch is almost perfect, never had much of an issue with that, just confuse myself by maybe thinking too deeply about the correct way a note is supposed to start and where exactly in my body am i supposed to feel things

Hi thank you for watching and thank you for writing! I would disagree that there should be "no tension down lower" if there is literally no muscle engagement then you have no support. The fact is there IS muscle engagement, however like you say there is a way to overdo it that causes constriction in the larynx which we don't want. Support feels like you are containing PRESSURE in the body. This pressure has a relationship wtih the vocal cords in that it feels like you can "rest" your voice or "lean" into the sound without it coming from the throat. The reason I say a relationship with the vocal cords is that if the cord closure itself or compression is not working properly then you will still have no SUPPORT even if the belly and breathing is working right. So there are many elements and parts and the only way to train the voice is as a whole. If you want to learn how to do that then I suggest getting your hands on my program prosingersvault.com

appreciate that info, I cant take the course at the moment as I don't have a reliable place to train at predictable times. What would you say was your biggest aha moment while you were on the up and down journey of self taught singing? Like you, I've gone from some times thinking I am close, only the next day feeling like I was delusional. I almost give up sometimes. I may do your course in the future but just cant at the moment.

I think i sing with false vibrato. im not certain but i think i just alternate the pitch with my larynx. when i sing mid-range notes its ok. but when i start to sing higher i cant really sing with vibrato. I sometimes crack because my larynx has no where to go when im singing high because it is raised. Have you ever heard of anyone doing this? or did you?

+Conker32192 of course. I help singers overcome these things every single day. You'll need a step-by-step SYSTEM to build your technique and overcome the weaknesses in it. Check out my singing program and get on board. Peace

+Phil Moufarrege im debating buying it. i have researched a lot of vocal coaches over youtube and you are in the top 10 and your isnt that costly compared to others which is a plus. I was actually looking for an answer to my question though. like "yes you may be producing a false vibrato with your larynx "
