Phil is by far one of the best teachers going around. Besides being such a genuine, down to earth, encouraging and humble person, he knows his shit! As he said a lot of teachers can talk the talk. Phil can demonstrate everything he explains and knows how to connect and teach it effectively to his students. I highly recommend him to anyone who is looking for top quality information from a top vocal coach and person.
Phil I remember watching your videos 6-7 years ago, I practiced for years, fell into strengthening falsetto trap, wasted years of every day practice. Now I sing my favorite songs up to A4 usually, I'm still not so good to sing B4 or C4 consistently, but I finally sing my favorite songs and I have no idea how I got here, because for many years of every day practice I couldn't do what I do today even if my life depended on it. My point is, singing can be unbelievably hard.
Phil I am constantly impressed with the way you convey your information without bullshitting us. Every video I watch from you brings the possibility of crafting a powerful mix voice closer to a reality, and that's really exciting.
@ Emil - I can't reply to your post you've disabled replies. About twang...it depends how you do it. But whenever I hear the word "twang" it's usually by those who aren't doing it properly, so I am a little cautious on using the term. I'll make a video about it.
Great video indeed. The two times of "breaking" make perfect sense. Thats why one should not be afraid of having an unpleasant sound when practising mesa di voce. The shaky sound can be the sign that support kicks in and alows the voice to briefly go in and out of full voice, because the singer isn't ready yet to sustain a long note.
Back at it again with the GREAT VIDEO... I know this is an older one but damn good. When I first started I always did the mum in falsetto. After training with you and learning Chest voice strengthening and support "mum" is really easy now. You let go, but the support must be there. You're awesome man!
I envisioned pushing down with my body weight and then pushing back with my throat when going high. Then as I got to higher notes that would usually have me flip to head voice, I restricted air flow and finally was able to make the break completely disappear. Without great teachers like you, I would never have figured this stuff out. Thank you so much for the email, Phil. Now, I must concentrate on vowel modification when in mixed voice.
Love to watch your videos again ....its been Like a year since i last saw this one....and everytime i rewatch them i pick stuff up now because They make more sense after all that training
Thanks mate, I've been singing in choirs for 10 years and somehow have an ATCL diploma but now I'm really, really fed up of straining above a B3 and topping out at D/Eb4. Already your tips have been helping me! Thanks!
7:00 I've observed in my voice that what makes me break apart mid flight is the 'intension' to flip to falsetto. That intension and my conscious decision to make that changes is what messes it all up. That 'intension' is also what i'm sure a lot of singers are caught on when you say they flip way too early instead of increasing chest range. Thx for showing that you need to kill the idea that you have that intension to flip, and just support the pitch you want to hit.
It's tricky making videos because I only get one way to explain this, yet everyone needs this explained to them in THEIR language in a way THEY understand, when I teach lessons I will explain this concept in 100 different ways for 100 different singers in a way that makes sense to them. I'm relieved it made sense to you ha ha.
Hi Phil, I love your work and it has helped me improve my mixed voice tremendously. However, I still have trouble relaxing my jaw and tongue while singing, which might impair my ability to go higher. Could you give me some pointers or maybe make a video on how to relax the tongue and jaw? Thank you!
+Phil Moufarrege Hmm the most surprising thing for me is when you say that we can "take" our chest (mix) voice to the same range of our falsetto. I dont mix proprely yet because i still have to work on my support. I would like to have more strengh in the 5° octave
I have always wondered what techniques are applied between these 2 different eb5 notes th-cam.com/video/g2N0TkfrQhY/w-d-xo.htmlm54s most people would say that this eb5 is "chesty" th-cam.com/video/kijpcUv-b8M/w-d-xo.htmlm54s while those same people would say that this eb5 is falsetto or head voice.
You said that every male should push chest to g4, I can push to maybe F#4 but when I sing loudly with support. If I'm quiet I need to start mixing at E4.Should you be able to sing in chest when singing with moderate volume too?
there are so many damn teachers out there and you are the first one who has mentioned that mix voice is not falsetto that other teachers teach to fool people they can sing high.
+Phil Moufarrege Yea well, why do they claim to be the great teachers and followers of great italian bel canto tradition if they can't even tell difference between falsetto and full voice. Sometimes, they sing with supported and compressed falsetto like you showed and then they say "you see how easy high C can be?", well yea of course its easy to sing high C in falsetto, even bass singers can do it without any training, but nobody teaches how to do it in full voice, because it is damn hard and it takes long time of practice to achieve freedom on those high notes and it does not fit in "become superstar in 10 days" bullshit,so they choose easy road.Anyways, your definitions are great, i hope your videos get more views so people can actually learn.
damn dude, your videos are so on point. theres a you for like every category of subjects to learn on youtube, but you're that guy for singing. I know you said that in the video it doesnt matter, but im wondering if you can go 15% chest and 85% head? I'm trying to create a sound similar to Justin Bieber's line 'As long as you La la la la la, *la la la la la la * love me'. It's falsetto but has a Slight bit of power and crisp to it. Or the falsettos Ed Sheeran uses in his songs. They seem to be 85% head, 15% chest
Wow..Can sing Mix as high as falsetto..There any exercise to increase Falsetto range? And If I can connected falsetto to Whistle ,So I can Sing as high as Whistle in full voice or not?
This is really good information. I learnt that I can flip into falsetto but I need to sustain the support. Here is where I am confused. I learnt from another video of yours that for male I need to bring the chest voice up to at least G4. But my voice breaks at E4. So, do I train my voice by yelling up to G4 and then start doing what you said in this video, or can I start to flip into falsetto at E4 but sustain the support like you said? Will the second method grow my chest voice?
There are multiple parts to developing range...it isn't just one thing. You need to get good at transitioning from chest to falsetto but you also need to learn how to stretch up your chest voice. I have a guide that talks more about the different things you have to train on my website when you sign up for the email list: PHILMOUFARREGE.COM
Hi Phil, I like your videos and I'm thinking of purchasing the singer's vault, but it's a lot of money and I was wondering if I can perhaps get a sample of the material as a proof of concept that the method would really work for me?
Phil Moufarrege Hi Phil, I didn't mean to offend you. I am not questioning your knowledge, but rather my own ability to pick it up by myself. Specifically in this video you mentioned something like "if you can't hear the difference between these two ways of passing the bridge then you just can't teach yourself how to sing, you need a professional to help you." This kind of got me worried because I'm not quite sure whether I do get the difference (and my throat hurts doing this exercise) so I was more wondering whether I am able to successfully self study using your program.
+Steven jwz Hey bro you didn't offend me. There is a huge difference between my course and you just "trying an exercise" from one of my youtube videos. Just trying exercises isn't how you build your voice because you will just use your current method of creating sound and do it on the exercises. Instead you need to learn how to create sound in a way that is strong and free of tension, that's what I teach and what my course is all about. There are so many elements and foundations that need to be built and your entire idea of how you create sound has to be guided step by step. That's what my course helps you achieve. with my course you have all the information there step by step and a private Facebook group where you can post clips to me and get my feedback to make sure you're doing things right. If you feel you can't learn that way then that's why I teach lessons through Skype. Cheers
I guess that depends on what YOU mean by "push". but to put it simply there is some form of "pushing" occuring in the belly. the vocal cords need to WANT to hold together with it too.
This is a common issue, there is another "bridge" around there. You'll need to get good at stretching your chest up to that A4 and also working on bridging from chest voice to falsetto and hiding the vocal break to move beyond the A4. Then as you get better wtih both of these, you can learn to take the chest voice all the way through in a mix. None of this will work if you don't approach it the right way though - so you might think you're doing it right but you might actually not be.
Hi man your videos have been really helpful for me but I have a question which is really important for me at this stage of developing my voice. My nose is usually stuffy cause I think theres some inflammation in my nasal passage. So, is that supposed to make it difficult for me to develop my mixed voice? because voice is constantly breaking. There have been some days in which my voice mixes well, and I THINK it tends to happen when my nose is more open. At the moment it's stuffy and when I inhale, one side is open and the other is semi open, and the sides keep switching during the day like in a flu or runny nose, but it's dry. So, is my voice not staying connected because my nose isn't 100% open? does this have some affect? or can u mix your voice even if you have a blocked nose and maybe I'm not practicing correctly or need more time. thanks
+Shajee Alvi Singing through the nose isn't what we want to do. When I sing, if I block my nose with my fingers it doesn't change the sound whatsoever. The only time it would effect you is on M and N consonants. See my videos on juicing and fasting if you want to get your health in order. best wishes
when I say breaking, I mean my entire chest range and head range are fine individually. Only when I'm trying to sing in one connected tone to mix my voice does it not have a proper, heavy, rich tone. It sounds nasally and needs to break into head voice. So maybe I'm just not practicing correctly. Another thing is that maybe I'm not putting enough power (volume) in my voice. Should I be singing at the maximum volume that my voice can achieve? or just at a medium volume. I had started developing my voice last year and after a couple of months if had gotten better (inclusive of my stuffy nose) and I haven't done proper singing/practice since last year because I used to have to hold back because I'm living in a university dorm but now I have a free place to practice openly so maybe this lack of practice and holding back as untrained my voice (sent it in a bit of reverse). would really appreciate your clarifications on this
+Phil Moufarrege haha sorry i was just typing that reply out and you responded. Oh alright, so then I guess it's not really a problem of my nose and I'm probably going to need to concentrate more on the way I'm practicing and give more time to it. Also, I'd really appreciate it if you could check out my cover for 'Drain You' by Nirvana on my channel. I had done a bit of warming up before I did it. It's nothing great but ya... hopefully will get better with practice. thanks!
hey +Phil Moufarrege nice tip.... i would like to get your vocal lesson dvd but can i request a song first? i want you to sing my favorate song "The One That You Love" by Air Supply....please x2 !!!
Hey Phil, how do you bring weight to that light connected tone? i can sing in that light tone, but when i try to bring weight to that (in my case it's a G4) it sounds heady even though it's louder
Thanks Phil, it's really a good video! I want to ask you every time I use mixed voice let my sounds goes up, and I use a deep breath to stand for it, but when it goes down, I couldn't let it become full chest voice and it sounds a lot of air come out... how can I fix that problem
+wu bo You'll have to send me a recording because there could be a thousand reasons and I need to hear you to be able to know what you're doing wrong. sign up for my vocal assessment on my website and send me a recording and I'll get back to you
Hi there +ivan sossan you'll really need to get good at the messa di voce exercise - learning how to start soft and swell into a loud tone on the same pitch. It teaches you how to get your voice, support and jaw in place for the note before you sing it. Like everything it's easy to tell you this but doing it by yourself is another matter. I cover all these things in my singing program and also one-on-one skype training. do yourself a favor and get together with me bro! you won't believe how quick you'll learn
What is the purpose of fasting if it takes you 'out of action'? Intermittent fasting (19 hours per day) is easy and does not leave me weak. It is enough to lower insulin levels and lose/maintain weight.....just asking....
I would say extended fasts are more for deeper issues that don't seem to get fixed through normal IF. Having said this though, in recent years I have moved away from extended fasts because a lot of the issues I had that I only knew how to solve through extended fasting would come back as soon as I started eating again. I've since learned how to tweak things in my diet and lifestyle to eliminate those problems without the need for extended fasting. I now consider extended fasting more of a "last resort" if you have some underlying issue that you are unable to remedy. While extended fasting can fix things, it does "take you out of action" and interferes a lot with your routine, and then when you go back to eating the same dietary habits are there. So I now come more from the idea of trying to make tweaks in my food choices and habits etc to fix things rather than diving straight for the last resort.
Hi Phil, this video really helps me a lot about the mixed. I just have a problem that when i follow the "ah" exercise with twangy sound, at the top notes they're going to be airy; like it is going to crack. Why that happen and how to overcome it? Thanks in advance !
I've never heard you so all I could do is guess. It could be that the back-middle part of your tongue isn't engaging properly into the sound (see my video on pharyngeal resonance) Are you in THE PATH TO VOCAL MASTERY? You not only will learn how to do all these things step-by-step but we also do live coaching calls where you can get specific feedback on your own unique struggles.
Thank you for this video it is really helpful. I do still have a problem, I can kinda belt up to G4/A4 and it flips but my larynx is rising sooo much, do your laryx remain neutral as you ascend or is it normal that it shoots up ?
yes your larynx shooting be shooting up. if the larynx shoots up too much you'll always have trouble with stability and consistency when it comes to putting those high notes in the context of a full song live. You'll likely need to find the point where the larynx begins getting unstable, it's likely lower than you think, possibly even around C4 and work on fixing your vowels there. Be particular attention to the OO and OH vowel, when you get those vowels right they will help build the strength of keeping the larynx lower, then you stem your other vowels from there. Meaning, if OO is good, you can stretch it to OH then AH. You can also stretch it from OO to EE to AE (hey). Basically everything stems from the OO vowel. It's likely that your OO is too high larynxed too. Another factor is you may just be oversqueezing (meaning you aren't using enough air). If you generally feel like your torso is not very involved and that you're singing from the neck upwards then it's likely you need to use more air. Work the notes F4 and below and make sure you can SIGH into the notes, meaning as you go louder you also swell more air (the sound shouldn't get airy, it should stay solid, but there's a feeling like more air is moving). You'll feel your torso work harder for the notes and the sound will get fuller and bigger. Make sure you can do this up to F4 on all vowels and in songs. This will help keep the larynx down. There is literally an entire process for building all this
@@philmoufarrege Well thank you, I'll try that! I actually noticed that around B3/C4 on the "OO" vowel, when I force myself to have a low larynx I generally flip to falsetto if I don't increase the volume, but I think my problem might be support. I'll try those things, thank you ! :)
hi, i have typical problem with high notes, for me everything after e4 full voice (e5 falsetto limit some days higher) is problem, i tried to sing in way you showed and i discovered that i can do this, even after few efforts i almost do the same sound as you showed, BUT you can make it powerful while i can't (i can only if i push chest like i did for several years), i practise your exersise already few weeks but my voice still sound weak, i mean i go through the break this way but i still sound like i sing falsetto but i am sure its connected, because there is almost no flipp and i keep volume same. should i keep practise it (and power will come after weeks, 2mounth.. 3 years.. 2 lifes..) or may be i missunderstood smth.
+Stanislav Zaborin Stan, I need to hear what you are doing. Take my vocal assessment at my website and send me a recording. That is the only way you can expect to get a detailed answer. I need to HEAR the sound you make.
Me: "So how do I sing properly?" Teacher: "Just....sing properly." Me: "Wow thanks! I really appreciate your thorough elaboration on the minute details I need to pay more attention to! Totally worth $70 an hour."
Phil Moufarrege Haha, I was just being sarcastic about the vocal coaches I’ve had lessons with. Your free videos are more valuable than the $200+ I had spent in the past.
Ah I see. I just found it odd that you came to my channel, enjoyed the content but chose not to say that and instead complain about other teachers. Glad you're finding some answers to your vocal struggles, stay tuned for new content soon.

Hello +You Can Sing ANYTHING! Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it
i like your videos too pop smack but you could learn a thing or two from phil. or a lot lol. (informational video making wise)
One of the very few real, genuine people/ teachers on TH-cam. You guys are the rarest gems
thank you I appreciate that
Brilliant!
This really is brilliant. I have never thought of it as two voices tapering in and out of each other. Thank you.
Phil I am constantly impressed with the way you convey your information without bullshitting us. Every video I watch from you brings the possibility of crafting a powerful mix voice closer to a reality, and that's really exciting.
Hi +ingeniousclown Gaming , thanks for the support!
So agree with this. I only started learning to sing 2 weeks ago and his videos have helped me learn and further my obsession to get better.

Hi +Owen Korzec thanks for dropping in.
Great video - Thank you - I like your honest open style

Back at it again with the GREAT VIDEO... I know this is an older one but damn good. When I first started I always did the mum in falsetto. After training with you and learning Chest voice strengthening and support "mum" is really easy now. You let go, but the support must be there.

you are very welcome. Is there anything you have a question about regarding the voice?
Hi Phil, I love your work and it has helped me improve my mixed voice tremendously. However, I still have trouble relaxing my jaw and tongue while singing, which might impair my ability to go higher. Could you give me some pointers or maybe make a video on how to relax the tongue and jaw? Thank you!
+Rigumaru tongue and jaw tension can greatly impair high ranged powerful singing for sure. I'll see what I can do for you.
Thanks for clearing things up. Great video.

+Brian Sec nice negotiating skills...
lol how about before I let you buy my dvd can you sing one of MY favourite songs?? please x infinite
Ok i do my best... 😄
Hey Phil, how do you bring weight to that light connected tone? i can sing in that light tone, but when i try to bring weight to that (in my case it's a G4) it sounds heady even though it's louder
I would need to hear what you are doing in order to see what you're doing differently.
Thanks Phil, it's really a good video! I want to ask you every time I use mixed voice let my sounds goes up, and I use a deep breath to stand for it, but when it goes down, I couldn't let it become full chest voice and it sounds a lot of air come out... how can I fix that problem
+wu bo You'll have to send me a recording because there could be a thousand reasons and I need to hear you to be able to know what you're doing wrong. sign up for my vocal assessment on my website and send me a recording and I'll get back to you
hi phil!I can hit high notes starting from the bottom but i find it very difficult hit high notes from the top. how can i do that?
It could be that the back-middle part of your tongue isn't engaging properly into the sound (see my video on pharyngeal resonance)
Are you in THE PATH TO VOCAL MASTERY? You not only will learn how to do all these things step-by-step but we also do live coaching calls where you can get specific feedback on your own unique struggles.
No i'm not. But i will manange to join, soon. Thank you!
yes you do need to increase volume.
hi, i have typical problem with high notes, for me everything after e4 full voice (e5 falsetto limit some days higher) is problem, i tried to sing in way you showed and i discovered that i can do this, even after few efforts i almost do the same sound as you showed, BUT you can make it powerful while i can't (i can only if i push chest like i did for several years), i practise your exersise already few weeks but my voice still sound weak, i mean i go through the break this way but i still sound like i sing falsetto but i am sure its connected, because there is almost no flipp and i keep volume same. should i keep practise it (and power will come after weeks, 2mounth.. 3 years.. 2 lifes..) or may be i missunderstood smth.
+Stanislav Zaborin Stan, I need to hear what you are doing. Take my vocal assessment at my website and send me a recording. That is the only way you can expect to get a detailed answer. I need to HEAR the sound you make.
Me: "So how do I sing properly?"
Teacher: "Just....sing properly."
Me: "Wow thanks! I really appreciate your thorough elaboration on the minute details I need to pay more attention to! Totally worth $70 an hour."
you didn't find this video of mine to contain anything valuable?
Phil Moufarrege Haha, I was just being sarcastic about the vocal coaches I’ve had lessons with. Your free videos are more valuable than the $200+ I had spent in the past.
Ah I see. I just found it odd that you came to my channel, enjoyed the content but chose not to say that and instead complain about other teachers. Glad you're finding some answers to your vocal struggles, stay tuned for new content soon.
