- Here is something different then previous videos, some talking and history of how I got Duffy AG to where it is today and how the farm and my life works. I hope this answers some of the questions I have been getting. If there is more drop them in the comment section. Thanks for watching

Very true. If I win lotterery I'd do samething. Buy more equipment and land and be back to just getting by again

Just started watching your videos recently, I work on a 3000 cow farm out in western NY, also started a beef farm on my grandparents farm buying equipment after graduating from cobelskill in 2011, glad a fellow alumni is doing good. Keep up the great work man.

Really enjoyed hearing your story. In 1977 my father and I were sold out by the bank. We both worked off farm for several years to get back to farming. Long story short at age 63 I'm still farming. It was was a lot of work, but all worth it. Keep chasing the dream, you'll never regret it. Best of luck to you, keep the videos coming. Shout out to Yenko.

I started out like you but further back, mid 90s. I'd qualified as an agricultural mechanic and worked with a main dealer from1987 to 92. Also doing some farming at home with my father, beef and potatoes. Working my butter off but really only making money for other people so in 1994 I quit the day job , our being too small to make a living I had to do something else with it so I bought a tractor and hedge/ verge cutter and took on some Contract work. In 95 I got the opportunity to team up with another guy and make baled silage. I bought a conditioner mower and bale wrapper and he bought a rake and a baler. That first year we made 7500 bales along with our own which was pretty good so I bought another tractor which I put the hedge cutter on and contracted Into the local authority.... tight rates but guaranteed payment. I put an operator on that and to be honest when everything was paid I didn't have much for myself. The second silage season went well until the late second cut.... the baler man's tractor blew the engine and he didn't seem to have the funds to fix it so my tractor (Ford 7740) was put under the baler and I used the farm tractor (Ford 6610) on the wrapper. That went OK but the following spring my partner announced that he was giving up so I had to decide to either go it alone or give up. In the end I bought his baler and the rake plus another tractor..an international 785 for raking and wrapping. I borrowed money so at end of that Season I didn't make a whole lot and found it difficult to collect money. But I stuck with it and picked up other work baling hay and straw , I also bought a lime spreader and got a contact with a nearby quarry to spread for them so another tractor was purchased. In 2002 I got the contact to take of dust suppression at that quarry and general yard maintenance creating full time work for the tractor and a backhoe digger. Since then we now make over 20000 silage bales per year, have two hedgecutters working, spread and haul lime. Have two tractors with dump trailers and browsers working in the the quarry and the backhoe. We also run three 5 axle tipper trucks on contract haulage of ages from the quarry. Its been a long road with lots grief at times but I've enjoyed it. I still do some farming and it's still my first love but the quarry contract work has been the means for me to invest and expand.
Love the history of you and the farm. I grew up in Massachusetts, in North Reading if you know where that is. As a kid I worked on a farm. It was small and owned and run by an elderly farmer. We grew mostly corn but also several varieties of squash, pumpkins and strawberries. By the time I joined the Navy at 19 I was pretty much doing everything myself hiring help just to pick corn. I loved every minute of it and reminisce often. Thanks for the videos. I relive farming through you.

I grew up on a small dairy/ cash crop farm, I am now 65, didn't follow my dream for farming like you, so I will always be that wannabe farmer, but sure love and can relate very well to the struggles of being a farmer as well as farming.
Enjoyed the back story, look fwd to more! Sheds light on a few questions! I LOVE the old equipment, do the same myself just a lot smaller scale and different aspect! Thank you

When i was a kid we started farming with 420ac 3/4 section we were mixed farming cattle pigs and grain and a lot of used equipment and a lot of tools it was tough for a few years but the farm is still up and running to this day.
Thanks for taking the time to break down the history. I've been following you on IG since your college years. I cant recall how I stumbled upon you, but I have enjoyed the journey. Thanks for doing what you do. Hopefully someday you'll be able to visit our farm on one of your adventures. :)

I used to tell a lot of people who asked me, as part of my job as an agricultural economist, how to start farming that the short answer is you can't unless your father is a farmer. The second answer is the old joke "how do you make a fortune in farming ? Start with 2 fortunes." The third answer is you have to grow up in at to have the guts and stamina and work ethic farming requires . Very few transplants survive more than a few years.

Use work campers for labor. Usually retired traveling campers. Supply a water, electric, sewer hook up for a RV in exchange for the labor. Would help with needing a driver or just a hand helping with repairs.

Getting into farming can be tough. I've been working on it for the last 5 years. My wife and I are in the process of buying her parents farm with her brother. It's a tough game, but it's worth the gamble.

Nice to hear your story. As much time and money you spend chopping I thought it brought in more money since it is so difficult to do properly. In fact the amount and time you do making silage seems your return should be better. Like how much is this helping your dad to make more? Cool enjoyed the video . Wish my knees were not bad I would come to work for you . Over 30 years driving semis . I also worked horse farms and hauled horses . Used to run shuffle bottoms and Bo cats . Hauled hay , Raw bark , compost , shavings . Cotton seed and cracked corn . Worked maintenance on farms . Been to a lot of dairy farms and cattle ranches as well . My grand parents had a small farm on my fathers side . My mothers side when they were young before my grandfather died they had a Dairy farm in W,Va . Guess you could say farming is in the blood lol .

If you move to Wayne county ohio, you can have all the manure you want to haul :) one excavator has I think 8 big semis and many many tractor tankers. A lot of manure in our area

I know this will sound stupid but I am disabled and not physically able to farm but I live in a huge farming community so I enjoy seeing farms and the equipment. But I play farming simulator 19 and I really enjoy being able to recognize equipment and terms.... Makes me feel like I'm of apart of the community.

Well I’m glad someone is making it farming. Don’t know where you you get your money. I milked cows for 25 years. We sold them in 2014. My friend just sold his cows last week. He sold to agrimark. He got more for his milking rights then his cows. We now raise beef and sheep. With 5.73 tons of grain costing 2458.00. Not much future in agriculture. The true cost of food is not seen in the stores. Honestly don’t know how you can afford robots to milk your cows.
