Which of the diameter be on the end of the gas bulb I burned one of these out in my service rifle. I still have the broken one and I was wondering how I could measure it
It's btw 0.180 - 0.182. The only way to find that is to use a highly precise tool like a Mitutoyo Micrometer. You need to measure it in several spots and pull an average. You can use a cheap micrometer, but it won't be as accurate. Easiest method is to spend $65 and buy a Mark Brown Custom Gas Tube Gauge from Brownell's. That won't tell you the exact dimension, but it's a very fast and easy way to find out if it passes TDP specs or not. Chad has a video on that tool if you're interested.
He uses it as a easy way to identify broken, damaged, or worn out parts. He keeps them around for class examples and it makes sure they don't get mixed in with usable parts.

A tweak on your idea. I fill the barrel with pieces of this and shoot it at my weeds to weed whack. I get gun time AND yard work in
