  • On this episode of Prado 120 Adventures, I'm showing you how I installed a Steinbauer chip into my 1KZ Prado.
    Power has always been the Achilles heel of my Prado, and it always seemed to be just the way things are once I'd added all my accessories. But with this one mod that had been out of reach until now, hopefully I can change that!

    Always disconnect your battery ground terminal first. And reconnect it last.
    Will save some sparks if your spanner inadvertently touches a ground when disconnecting the positive terminal!

    I have the same thing on my 1KZ along with a 3" exhaust. I find it's very good around town and on take off but on highway hills at 100kmph it still struggles. I can manage 10l/100km on the highway though so I can't complain. I actually intentionally bought a 1KZ with this rather than by a 1KD on the recommendation of mechanics I know who work at Toyota. Providing I don't tow with it I think it's fine however mine is otherwise pretty standard (no steel bullbar, winch or lift).

    • @offroadcrusader
      @offroadcrusader  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah these 1KZ engines arent known to be rocket ships, but any improvement is worth it in the long run!

      That's really interesting. I've been thinking of getting the steinbauer for my 1kz only because I wanted better performance uphills and overtake.
      Mine's got 330ks on it. I've already done intake clean, boost controller at 13 pound boost, egr delete, 3" exhaust and snorkel. I've got a lift and the only heavy thing is 1 drawer.
      With all those mods, I always noticed better low range power, but nothing major uphills or overtaking, although some improvement.
      If it's not going to make much of a difference, I'd rather stick with what I've got and save $800-900 on this unit. What do you guys think?

    • @1samwhich
      @1samwhich 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@seductivating Yeah man I agree. I'm chasing the same solution as well atm. My Prado 1kz sucks on long hills (which I drive daily) and 10x worse if you have the family in the car or my trailer on the back. Keen as to find some top end power out of mine. Unichip or larger turbo maybe?

  • @jasonscheepers255

    Nice video. keep up the good work mate. Interesting to see how much of a difference playing with the settings on the chip makes. I have the same car with 3" exhuast, Snorkel, stock boost and Steinbauer but on the stock setting. Soon going to be increasing my boost to 13PSI and increase the fueling a little ont he chip. What do you find made the biggest difference between increasing boost from stock to 14psi or installing the chip or to difficult to really tell?

    • @offroadcrusader
      @offroadcrusader  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks mate, yeah going from stock to 14psi makes it feel a bit peaky, but it does really help make more power from about 2000rpm onwards.
      I've turned the chip up since making this and it has definitely made a difference. 0-100 is now down to 19sec.

  • @SHANDEE2
    @SHANDEE2 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good stuff mate, how were the comparative engine parameters? Boost and pyro specifically? They're directly fuel effected, so I would assume some change.

    • @offroadcrusader
      @offroadcrusader  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well the boost is only dictated by the turbo and wastegate pressure, so that doesn't change. The fuelling will react to boost levels, and with my 3 bar MAP sensor it has been a bit lean. But with adding the chip and winding up the fuelling, it has made a good difference.
      I have an EGT gauge on the way so i'll be able to tell you then. But so far nothing is out of the ordinary with operating temps.

    Hello,
    Happy to find this channel :)
    I am planning to buy a second-hand Prado 120 series (2006) or a second-hand Fortuner (2011), with automatic transmission.
    What I am finding out on the ground is that there is a lot of versions within the 120 series
    (VX,GX, and some don't have anything written on the back) and that confuse me a lot.
    Since it is automatic transmission I am looking for, what advice can you give me so that I can get a car that I can do at least a decade with. Also what is the difference in term of performance between diesel-petrol? Since the car will be a second-hand, do you have advices that I have to pay close attention to before buying? Your advices will help me a lot. Thank you :)

    • @offroadcrusader
      @offroadcrusader  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi there, thank you for your support!
      For the 120 Series Prado there are 4 variants: the GX, GXL, VX and Grande. GX is the most basic type, with limited features while the Grande gets all of them. Best to check out a wikipedia page about the Prado to see all the features listed.
      If you want a car with an auto transmission, make sure it has been serviced recently, including a full ATF flush. That will help keep the transmission smooth for a long time.
      Petrol-Diesel performance is a hot topic, but I can tell you that the Petrol has higher power, lower torque, and the diesel has lower power but higher torque. Diesel is great for touring over long distances, towing trailers, or offroad work, while the petrol is good at shorter drives, having more power, and sand driving where power is key. Fuel consumption will also separate them, but again that depends on how you are using them. Diesel in general will be more fuel efficient, while the petrol can be very thirsty.
      Hope this helps.

    • @offroadcrusader
      @offroadcrusader  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I do have those mods. I'm thinking that the old auto transmission and all the weight I carry is responsible for those times.
      But around town, it does make a big difference with rolling acceleration. Definitely worth it

    •  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@offroadcrusader mine is stock with unichip only, which already improved acceleration. I will increase the boost to 1bar and use a new map, which gave around 115whp on dyno. Once I got the results I will update here. I agree that the transmission plays a big role in the results. Best regards from Brazil.

    • @offroadcrusader
      @offroadcrusader  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Glenn,
      Yeah I am still very happy with this mod. The extra power and torque really helps with getting up to speed on the highway or overtaking.
      The only drawback I have found is that the chip isn't active while using cruise control, since you don't use the throttle pedal. That means that if you have cruise control on and need to go up a hill, the lack of power causes it to kick back a gear. It's easily corrected by driving manually for the hill, but if you're looking for any cons that's the only one I can think of.

    • @4wdadventureoz
      @4wdadventureoz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@offroadcrusader thanks mate, I have the 2006 manual 1KZ-te with Drive and in the shop at the moment replacing glow plugs, injectors, inlet manifold cleaned and the Torquit 3" exhaust installed hoping to find some gains. I will be towing a lot and sick of dropping to 80kmh hoping up a slight hill. 380,000km on the clock so giving the engine some love is well overdue. Adding a chip is the last option, but I've been holding off as I've heard of a few blown engines however AI don't think any were using the Steinbauer.

    • @offroadcrusader
      @offroadcrusader  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@4wdadventureoz That all sounds like it will help.
      I have never heard of a 1KZ having problems with a chip, only the 1KDs.
      If you find that after you have all this work done that you are still wanting more, perhaps look into a steinbauer chip.
