- Our summer Salmon Kayak Fishing Season has officially started on Vancouver Island.
We hit the water on our Old Town Sportsman Pdl 120's in hopes of finding some early Season Coho Salmon with some brand new gear that would hopefully lead to our first Salmon of the season!

I recommend a small aluminum boat that looks like a bit of a s-show. Great video tho you guys are troopers.
@bigbc5293 we were boat shopping a few years ago before stumbling across Kayak Fishing. After doing some more research, we fell more and more in love with the idea of Salt Water Kayak Fishing. It's a more up close and personal way of fishing, gets the adrenaline flowing, and we saved the 50 grand we were looking at spending on a boat! 😆😆
But yes, it absolutely, 100% is a sh*t show most of the time, that's part of what makes it so damn fun! 🙌
Thanks for watching!
I spend half these videos scanning the background truing to figure out what area you're in. Great fish Kyle ! Tough fight with all the tangles !
😂😂😂 thanks buddy! You can always shoot me a message, I'll tell ya, but only you! 🙌
Great video. I am in Nanaimo for six weeks with my kayaks and found your link on the Vancouver Island group.
Thank you! We leave for our annual west coast trip in a couple of weeks, but hoping to get out a couple times before then, maybe we'll see you out there! And if not, enjoy your stay and thanks for watching! 🙌
what's this thing you have on your down rigger??? I have never seen or used anything like this but then I fish mostly from the shore with dead shrimp for red fish or stink bait for catfish, but am going to get an OT 120 sometime, also trying to see what it's like kayak fishing vs from a regular boat. subscribed and watching many things am unfamiliar with. Downriggers, dry clothing...maybe more
So we use an 8lb weight on our downriggers, we're usually targeting early season salmon at 100-150 feet deep so it helps keep our lures down, trolling at around 2mph if we didn't have them our gear would eventually come right up to the surface. Kayak Fishing is pretty addicting, especially being so close to the water, I guess we're a couple of adrenaline junkies 😂 highly recommend trying it especially if there's a shop near you that has some sort of demo day. Any other questions ask away and hopefully we can answer them!
Thanks for watching!
Great video as usual ! Why did you move the downrigger back? You did not like the V-lock location in the side front cockpit? It's seem's to make hard to crank in the back? Any details about that ? Thank you, great job!
Thank you! So a couple of reasons, after taking a long look at Crystal's Kayak, we realized that she had no open sides on the kayak to re-enter if she ever flipped her kayak. With her rod holders and cameras on the starboard side, and the massive downrigger on the port side as well as her big crate in the tank well, it could make for a scary situation if she ever flipped.
#2 is the downrigger is a bit on the heavy side, especially with the swivel base, having it on the gear track location with the v-lock we noticed her kayak leaning to the port side quite a bit, where as in the tankwell area behind the seat it doesn't lean very much, if at all. I think the reason for this is the mounting point behind the seat is more towards the center of the kayak vs the old position.
Lastly she has mentioned how much easier it is to lower and crank up the downrigger being behind the seat vs having to lean forward to do it, possibly due to the angle of the seat leaning back it's really not bad at all and puts the downrigger actually closer to you vs the long reach forward. We left the original Vlock base in the old position in case she ever changes her mind, but right now she's much happier with it behind the seat. 👍
Thanks for watching! 🙌
@@kckayakfishing Thanks a lot for the details. I appreciate that .
@@SylvainMorin-ht1rx anytime! 🙌🙌
I would love to even see a short of the updated downrigger position/set up.
@@ShenpaiWasTaken we can definitely do that!
Thanks for watching!
Great video! What are the rod holders you use?
@@04rev800 thanks! We use the Scotty R5 Rod holders on a Scotty Extension arm and a Scotty 343 base. It's the best rod holder we've found for the type of rods and reels we use.
Thanks for watching!
what do you guys wear on the water if no dry suits ?
@egc04 waterproof socks and either uv pants or sometimes Neoprene pants if it's a bit cooler, from Back Country Skinz, then a UV sun shirt or sometimes a light jacket. As much as we love our drysuits it's just to hot out to wear them for long days on the water in summer.
Thanks for watching!
You guys in kansas?
@@canodabarber nope, British Columbia, Canada! 🙌
what software are you using to see the reef formations etc
We use the Navionics app on our phones when fishing a new reef, then once we've passed over them once our Garmin Striker +4 fish finders have the bottom structures mapped and saved
@@kckayakfishing thanks for the info and nice job tracking down a hatchery coho!
@@wizzle89 no problem at all! Thanks for watching! 🙌🙌
Nice! Would love to do a collaboration some day!
Absolutely! 🙌🙌
