There's a reason for the saying "Montana, The Last Best Place." Whether it's true or not, Montana is surely a special place. For 6 days we would be fly fishing in remote locations along the expansive wilderness found in Northwest Montana. The fishing was awesome, and the backdrop for it all second to none. To top it all off we legally could fish for bull trout. We had an amazing time and got some beautiful shots which we are stoked to share with everyone. Enjoy!

How the heck did you get from the campsite to the river? Wings? Don't you feel bad taking advantage of those cutties that had probably never seen an artificial fly? Very nice video. I'm 71 years old and have been coming to Montana every year, except for two, since 1968. Back then the big rivers that are now a zoo were pristine and often I could fish all day on the middle Madison, Beaverhead, or Big Hole and rarely see another fly fisher. Now, and for the last 18 years I fish the same river every year because it has big trout that rise freely. What you are experiencing with your buds, you will see in time, is as, if not more important than the actual catching of another trout. I fish with two other guys just like your gang and we have been together for over fifty years. It is still awesome to go to MT together and fish, laugh, have a few drinks, and reminisce about all the waters we have chased trout in over the last half century.

Matt Troutman I live in Montana, I fish the Madison, Missouri, Gallatin, Boulder, etc...More often than not I am the only person out there...it may not be as good as it was but man, its still pretty incredible
norbaracer13 Yes, I still think the fly fishing in MT is excellent. I don't want to mention on the Internet where I fish but every year when I go out for two weeks I land dozens of 17" - 19" wild browns and rainbows and a good dozen 19+" - 23" and all on small dry flies.

I don't know how to get to your inbox. It is a taiwater north of the Beaverhead. You should be able to figure where it is. Do you have a Facebook page? If so I'll post up some of my over 21" browns.

Lovely video! Great to see three young guys out there lovin' fly fishing. I'm 70 now and have fished in Montana at least 45 different years. Back in the late 1960's - early 1970's I'd spent June - August driving all around in my 1969 VW Campmobile. Fishing here and there and camping wherever I wanted. Fished all the big, and many of the not so big, rivers before they became popular. Still a great state for really big trout on dries and also smaller, but more, trout all day long on lesser known creeks. BTW it was cool to see you weren't catching any invasive species like browns and rainbows.
Invasive? Aren't rainbows native to the northwest and Montana?
That is correct! There were no rainbows, or brown trout, in Montana until they were stocked there. Now they reproduce naturally. At one time the only trout in MT were cutthroat, Bull trout, and maybe Dolly Varden way up around Glacier. Also there were lots of grayling but now very few.
There were also no Brook trout in Montana until they were stocked at some time in the past. Brook trout were native to watersheds east of the Mississippi and I think primarily in cold water streams, rivers, and lakes. The Northeast and down to the Smoky Mtns were the native range as well as some of the mid Western states like Michigan.

I know I'm sounding like an old crank, but the music is selection is incongruous with the stellar footage of the mountains and fishing. Acoustic guitars and trout fishing = the way God intended.
Wonderfully shot but with the most brutal musical backdrop.

Really awesome experience. I've seen some idylic places on videos,and in real. But this is one of those places I really want to experience myself. What fantastic scenery and quality fishing there. You gotta love the mountains and its streams that carved them out. Full of beautifull cutthroath rainbows and other. A big plume on a hook,and you will catch,so pure looking there. You are one of the few lucky ones on earth to have this as "your backyard".

Nice video, and some beautiful water and fish. A great advertisement for barbless hooks, though. If I was on that trip I would have hated to have had to hike out to the ER just because my buddy was too stubborn to pinch his barbs and couldn't get a hook out of himself, or worse, out of me.
Watching this reminds me of everytime time I head out to rip some lips with my buds. Laid back, lots of laughs and epic fish catching. Great music selection by the way, one of the many marks that sets this apart from other fly fishing videos. Yeah buddy.

I just bought my first fly rod. Going up the little north fork of cda river. Any tips for a brand new guy trying to go fly fishing? I got the orvis encounter combo. Came with everything needed besides some extra leader and flies which I bought. Gonna hit the st Joe hopefully shortly after hitting the cda river.
