"Dress for comfort" - seems so obvious, doesn't it? But many women (including me) were taught to look "pretty" in the first place no matter if they felt comfortable in these clothes. I am so happy this is changing. And by the way, with time I learned that you can have both comfort and chic look - and that you can (and should!) define "looking pretty" by yourself :) Thank you, Christina for a very inspirational video!
1. Dress for comfort. 2. Invest in good underwear. 3. Limit colours to a max of 3. 4. Less is more (accessories). 5. Stick to the rule of thirds (proportion-wise). 6. Get dressed (instead of wearing athleisure). 7. Embrace being an outfit repeater. 8. Integrate occasion wear with regular wardrobe. 9. Wait at least 6 months before buying into a trend. 10. Size up a max of 1 size.
I agree with all of these except getting dressed at home 😅. I work from home and cannot stand wearing jeans at home. I do however wear some “fancier” lounge wear and make sure I am cleaned and hair is somewhat polished to make myself feel better.
I really like how you never pretend that your rules are universal and never shame anyone for having different ideas of stylle. I love your style, so your rules are very useful for me. The first one seems so obvious but actually really had me think. Thank you!
“Embrace being an outfit repeater” is such a big one for me. I have really figured out my personal style from a lot of trial and error, and now I have a selection of a few pairs of jeans and a good number of tops that just make me feel awesome and look great. But it leads to not having a lot of variety, and I never get bored with it. I love using a statement jacket and shoes as a way to make an outfit different. Tricks I learned from your channel!!!
Here’s one of my rules: Get a great tailor and get your clothes perfectly fitted. I finally found the best tailor at a local cleaners (I had been skeptical that tailors at cleaners were as good as special alterations shops). A good tailor can take a double breasted jacket and make it single, remove pockets, shorten sleeves at the shoulder and just about everything else. I do use a different place for denim - Dr. Blue Jeanns.
I completely lost and have not been able to find my sense of style since 2020. Your videos are so refreshing and make so much sense! Especially since I’m in my 30’s now. Haha Totally inspired to revamp my wardrobe into quality vs. quantity!
Love all these tips!!! I cannot agree more with the “Get Dressed” one. When pandemic hit, I started WFH and practicing yoga at home. I literally lived in my leggings for more than a year and finally realized that I lost my style. Right now, I (almost) only wear leggings when I’m practicing or hiking. Need to keep this up😆
Love your videos! Can you do one on how you care ( wash/ clean) your clothes? Such as jeans - how often do you wash? Do you use the dryer? Same with blazers, and tees. A kinda how to care for your wardrobe & how to take care of your clothes & help them last…
@@Christinamychas Looking forward to this, I just started incorporating blazers into my wardrobe as I inherited some from my Grandma's wardrobe and need to look smart in the office, but I keep skipping over them because I'm worried about caring for them
Yes, the 3 colour rule is a must when I dress. Also, the proportion rule of thirds is important to me. Thanks for the confirmations in your video today, Christina!😊
I think the trend one is so important because it seems so counterintuitive. I mean, many would assume being the first to a trend is good, but really it just means your style is almost always looking like a costume or dated and almost never in that effortlessly stylish ideal. Incorporating trends after you’ve had a lot of time to actually consider if a trend is you means your personal style has integrity, or even exists at all!
Completely agree on the oversized advice. I've always been frustrated that the look didn't suit me when I really wanted it to (seemed like a good solution for comfort), recently discovered I can do it if certain elements are more "tailored" eg shoulder seam and sleeve length on an oversized blazer. Keeps it looking relaxed but not like I'm playing dress ups with dad's work clothes.
I agree with all 10 rules, but when it comes to no.6 i do have clothes i just wear in the house. They are usually cozy, soft and comfortable. I never go outside in them. If i go to the shop, other errands, lunch with friends i put other clothes on. That's just me.
Would you list the sizes of sweaters and pants from Grana to help determine if they run true to size. The more you refine your style, the better you look. You seem confident, polished, and intentional about the looks you put together. Thanks a million for the guidelines. Susan
re: "get dressed every day." Yep. I learned this one in the mid '80s when I started working from home as a court reporter. There were days when I'd have to dress up and go to courtrooms or attorneys' offices, and then there were days when I'd have to sit at the typewriter (!!!) at home after having stacked my carbon paper between the typing paper (!!!!!!!!!) and type the transcripts. (Boy, was I ever glad when we got the computers, the dot-matrix printers, the multi-copy paper that came pre-stacked in big boxes.). On the days when I worked from home, if I didn't "get dressed" and "have a schedule" on those days, and in those days I had little kids running around at home, I just got little or nothing done. If, however, I got up, got the kids going, dressed "for work" and worked at home that day, I got stuff done.
Super helpful. I liked the outfit repeating principle. It's the manifestation of having a style uniform and formula. The oversized look is a trend, so you are wise to keep it reasonable and manageable!
Yes! Embracing outfit repeating has been my GOLD STANDARD in feeling good every day! It definitely has been something I have learned to embrace; wasn't always on my radar. Also, don't you just love teal? (I'm wearing it today!) It looks good on EVERYONE!
Also, regarding trends, I totally agree about waiting. Or find it secondhand. I recently found a SHACKET that I love and is gorgeous at a thrift store. I would probably NEVER would have bought one if it wasn't for finding this gem while looking for something else. I have been challenging myself to wear it, and I am happy to report that I am and it fits in my wardrobe well! I don't always have these kinds of wins when buying something new (I'm learning to edit edit edit and be patient!), but am so pleased with how this one turned out :)
I know this is a year ago but literally just had the same experience. Avoided the shacket completely until I found a gorgeous baby blue one in an NY thrift shop, and I absolutely love it!
One I really try to stick with is stay consistent with colors or fit that looks flattering on me. I don’t really stick to 3-4 colors because I enjoy variety. Also avoid black/white except for a few peices. I also got caught up expecting to like skinny jeans even spent a lot of money on nicer pair but realized my normal bootcut makes me feel more comfortable. Love your videos even though our style is very different!
These videos have been so helpful for me in my "finding my style" journey. The problem I'm running into is buying something I think will work (colouring, size), I like it at first, until I actually wear it a few times and realizing it's annoying..for a few examples: - I bought a sweater dress online, that I really liked the look of, but then wore it and realized the arms are too short for me - Or a sweater that when I wore it I realized the colour washed me out - Or a pair of pants that I tried on and fell in love with in the store, only to wear them out in the world and they're too tight in the crotch. Why is it so hard to find clothes that I love? What am I doing wrong?
@ Julia Cann, I think we all make these mistakes occasionally. That's why it can take a long time to curate a wardrobe that really works for us as individuals. It's an ongoing journey and one I continue to enjoy.
Haha same sometimes ... Bought some sort of top several times and discoverd at home that I hate that feeling! Maybe the wishlist thing can help there? They were more impulsive decicions & following the trends
I did this recently with a pair of linen pants, got them home, cold washed them, and now they feel too small. Maybe they shrunk, but also.. I didn't actually *walk* in them when I tried them on in the shop 😓 so it could just be that, too.
Love your sustainable tips which encourage us to be more creative with our current wardrobe. I work from home often and also enjoy being comfortable. To elevate athleisure, I like wearing monotone outfits (tho sometimes top and bottom have different textures), a necklace, and I'll put on a cap or beanie outside.
I love your style and your channel. It is nice to see you incorporating a little bit of color into your wardrobe. Deep greens look great on you. I wasn't aware that Grana delivers to Canada. I had looked at them several years ago and at that time they were not delivering to Canada. I will have to check them out again! 🙂
Thanks. Great rules. Most of them are what I follow or want to follow, so it's good to sense you coaching me to follow-through. I'm could sit here and keep watching more of your videos, but I'm going to head to my closet now and do some culling.😊
Yes yes yes to Rule 2 - I am a member of the IBTC who needs the shape provided by a proper bra or underwire. I’ve really liked Pepper bras for that. They’ve also got some wire free options for people who prefer more of a bralette fit. I think they offer band sizes up to 40, cup sizes up to B.
I definitely felt the pressure to wear more colors to avoid being ¨boring¨. And surprise surprise, I succumbed and ended up with colors that I don´t even want to wear. I´m starting over from scratch now, with my neutrals first. Then I´ll really sit down and see about colors lol.
Thank you for permission to repeat! First time and subscribed. I'm very guilty of closet full of clothes and nothing to wear. I'm going to think differently and create a basic simple wardrobe Thanks again 🙂
Loved this video! I noticed I already apply some of these rules on a daily basis so I'm happy about that! I love your channel I have been a follower for a couple of years now and enjoy watching these videos.
Thank you for another amazing and helpful content you have created. What I actually would really like to compliment you on today is your amazing hairstyle. You look absolutely fabulous. Gorgeous! 🎉
I also enjoy your videos and content but just want to ask about Jackets. Your photo shows a Tee shirt on its own which is improved by wearing a jacket . Totally agree however I just want to ask how you get around the problem of centrally heated houses , offices , shops etc . As winters seem to be getting milder overall I often feel too hot in a jacket in spite of liking the look .
I've just found your channel, hi from New Zealand! You have great taste and I'm really enjoying your content, it's enjoyable, helpful and inspiring so thank you!

Hi, I would like to know where you get your white T-shirts? My preferences for style is; comfortable, classic and fun. Adding an accessory or funky shoes with a punch and the rest simple. Thank you
Ok, first of all…love your videos, your style, your ethos, everything. You are awesome and I have found so much valuable information from watching your videos, so thank you. Now, I have a question. I’m wondering if you would consider doing a video for people who don’t have a “uniform” or capsule wardrobe. I am a person who loves wearing vintage clothes from nearly any era, who loves to dress up, but also loves wearing full sweatsuits lol. You may have touched on this in a less specific way, but any tips for people who don’t want to have huge wardrobes, but who love lots of styles from different eras?
Christina, I really like your new hair style! The shoulder length suits you a lot. How do you manage to get such a beautiful volume and look? I tried to get it with a similar length (and I think my hair is similar to your), but did not manage... If you can share any tips, that wood be great :)
Hey Christina, Thanks so much for posting such amazing videos! I wanted to ask you if you knew of any companies I should look at for life long, high quality, natural fiber, closet staples for VERY petite women (for reference I'm 5'1, 100lb, athletic build). HELP!
Getting dressed got a lot easier when I gave up the notion that I had to hit all the basics or neutrals available to diversify or extend my wardrobe options. Deep and caramel browns look awful on me IMO, gray tops are ok in certain shades but I have never can find flattering gray bottoms, and navy isn’t for me either in most cases. I studied the colors I felt best in and did my own color analysis (which I got wrong a few times bc I’m a redhead with both cool and warm skin tones and it was confusing), decluttered and now I can throw most anything together out of my closet and it looks better than any of the outfits I use to come up with in the past. That and accepting that I can appreciate an aesthetic without incorporating it. I love puffy, flowey, ruffled romantic looks on others, but I’m more on the androgyny side of the femme spectrum 😅 also, I will quoth the internet forevermore hahaha This helped me clean up my wishlist, too! I actually know what I’m looking for and it’s so awesome to have the vocabulary and focus for once in my life and not just buying stuff because it’s cute or I think it would go with something else I have already.
Your outer layers look way too big for you. You have a slender, youthful figure, but the blazers you have chosen make you look boxy. The shoulders are more than three inches beyond your natural shoulders. Other than that, your recommendations are very practical, and the fabrics you show drape very nicely.
@@Christinamychas ya, the link was to non-adhesive ones, and I saw they have adhesive ones too. If the non-adhesive ones somehow stay in place, that would be fab. I'll look for your suggestion, tho.
I never really liked the rule of thirds. On you it does look very cool, but I think it is mostly suiting people with flat stomach or with chest significantly bigger than belly. Because once you have bottoms which are in any way tight to skin (even if it’s jeans), this cut on the waist turns into LOOK AT THAT BELLYYY. Which is rather unflattering 🤷♀️ I also find “taller + longer legs” a bit overrated:) again, i think it looks great on you and your figure, but some body types just look very cute when they appear short and small 😊
I also have a problem with that rule. I don't have and never had (even whan I was slim) a defined waist. Secondly, my waist line is quite high and I have a big bust, so tucking in or using a belt really looks unflaterring.
"Dress for comfort" - seems so obvious, doesn't it? But many women (including me) were taught to look "pretty" in the first place no matter if they felt comfortable in these clothes. I am so happy this is changing. Really like the idea of not owning occasion wear and just having something that you can dress up and down and actually use.

Love that you styled menswear knitwear! Just curious if you got your usual size or sized down because it's men's?
I took small in the sweaters and XS in the brown cardigan!

Which is rather unflattering 🤷♀️
I also find “taller + longer legs” a bit overrated:) again, i think it looks great on you and your figure, but some body types just look very cute when they appear short and small 😊
I also have a problem with that rule. I don't have and never had (even whan I was slim) a defined waist. Secondly, my waist line is quite high and I have a big bust, so tucking in or using a belt really looks unflaterring.
@@agam406 yet another proof that all rules in fashion are relative and we need to adjust them to our personalities and bodies 😉
