1978 Honda ATC 90 Full Restoration - Part 3

- Welcome to episode 3 of the ATC 90 restoration. Im this episode im going to be concentrating on the bodywork and paint side of things.
The first job i decided to tackle was stripping down the seat unit, all of the fixings were very rusty so most of them sheared or required grinding off. Once that was done it was time to head outside and wash off years of grime and grease and get a good look at what i was dealing with. Once dried off many bad repairs to the fiberglass became apparent so i set about stripping off all the old fiberglass and ended up with a seat unit in several pieces when i was done.
I the ground down all remaining residue in preparation for applying a complete new layer of fiberglass matt to add structural integrity back to the unit. after 2 layers were applied it was left to cure and topped off with a couple of layers of gel coat to protect the fiberglass matting and give a smooth factory looking finish.
The tank and other metal body parts were stripped with paint stripper to remove the bulk of paint before being put into the media blaster and all traces of remaining paint and rust were blasted off. It was then a case of filling any dents or heavy rust pitting, smoothing it out then applying a few layers of high build primer to all the panels.
Once the primer was cured i gave all the panels a coat of guide coat to help me see any defects that were left and once happy that the surface was perfectly smooth i proceeded to load up the spray booth with all the body panels again and paint all of them with several layers of basecoat R109 passion red.
I then removed the tank from the booth and headed to my vinyl application area to apply the new decals before the clear coat. Some of you may have noticed that the decals are slightly different than the ones i removed and that is because i had these ones specially made to remove the black background from the lettering as ive always thought the black makes the logo look untidy and unfinished now i know some of you will say that its not an OEM restoration now which is true but its my ATC and i want to have it my way and have it slightly unique ;).
Once the decals were on i applied several layers of clear coat to give me a high build for deep gloss and enough layer thickness that if it gets scratched during use one day i stand a good chance of wet flatting and polishing it out rather than having to re-paint a panel.
Once the clear coat was dry i set all the parts out for the usual ending shots and sat down for 5 to admire the shine then made a start on the next episode.

I am always seriously impressed at the results you achieve with your restorations but I am blown away by what you did with that back section.
It wasn’t just cracked and broken it was smashed to bits!
I thought that you would have to source another from somewhere.
To bring it back to brand new like that is bloody magical!

I can tell you something. Once you figure out how to keep the dust and needles off of you with fiberglass, it's a pleasure to work with.

The new work area set up and paint booth is producing great work AND great video content. keep them coming. This ATC will certainly be better than it was when it first rolled off the production line and DEFINITELY better than it was when it rolled over and broke the seat unit which is how most of these ATCs ended up! They either rolled or flipped!

I've found on projects like this, that Evaporust is a boon. Saves hours of wire brushing etc and fasteners etc 90% of the time come out looking almost new and ready for use again. I found the glass fibre work on this very satisfying to watch.

Man I thought that was beyond repair - I've not done a lot of fibraglass work myself before but the gelcoat finish on the inside surprised me the most - looked factory when you were done!

Great job mate, and nice to see you're back. I'm glad to see you didn't skip the gel coat as so many people do, not realising the fiberglass will catch moisture, get soggy and eventually delaminate.

That fiberglass is a testimony on why these three-wheeled trikes were not made long....unstable and lots of crashes! 120% on bringing back these items to well beyond showroom fresh!!

I had that same 3 wheeler. My parents had a cabin on the Illinois river outside Grafton. We would throw it in the front of the boat and go run the hell out of it in the sand bars. But you have to watch those huge tires on the bumps. Hit a small bump flying down a trail. Couldn't turn to avoid a utility pole. Broke off the foot peg, smashed up the fiberglass, and broke the tire off the axle. Plus bent the axle a little bit. All on the right side. Flipped over the handle bars. I blacked out for a second in the air. Opened my eyes and all I could see was the sky. Thought I was dead. Tried to walk back to the cabin but my right foot had other ideals. Foot swelled up twice normal size. An hour long ride to the nearest hospital. NO BROKEN BONES. My dad and I repaired the fender. Nowhere near as good as yours, more like the way you got it. Had a machine shop get the axel as straight as they could. With those huge tires you never did notice it wasn't perfect. Watching this made me relive all the fun we had on that bike. Many of times covered head to toe in river mud. I thank you very much. You are doing this bike a great service. TLDR: Had bike, wrecked due to huge tires. And possibly my own stupidity. Loved reliving all the fun had on bike from watching video. 😁

RRC Restoration I’ve learned that passion red has a few different shades. Ppg passion red is too pink in hue where DuPont is near spot on. My buddy owns a powder coating shop and he nailed it spot on to the ha2 code Honda used in 70’s and the 80’s. It’s mirror red from Columbia coatings. It’s the closest powder coat I’ve ever seen to the original ha2 part code passion red. Best of luck with all and love watching your builds.

You did an awesome job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I loved every minute of this video! It was very satisfying to watch as you brought that old fiberglass back to life! Your work is some of the highest quality work I have ever seen! It has inspired me to do just as good! I am in the process of repainting my house. I scraped it, put paint stripper on it, and sanded it with a Ridgid random orbit sander! My dad works long hours at work every day so my brother and I help him by getting this job done. I won’t forget the different methods you use. -Patrick

Wow! Fibreglass repairs. The last time (only time) I did any of that was patching the seams in the boot of my old Austin A30 back in 1967/8. The remains of the kit (Isopon) are still in my garage but I suspect the resin will be past it by now. Brilliant video as always, looking forward the next part. Bob
