I'm belated in watching this, partially bc I was around to watch some of the live recording I think. I sure remember some parts but not any of the editing room piley bits, anyway, lol.
And it's interesting to see those added bits! I didn't do any more research on 1619 after seeing the stream, so it's good to see the corrections from your polishing research

To my credit there was a bit of knowledge that was hard to track with how they cite their sources (this one finally had sources but were unhelpful), but yeah a few of these were definitely points I shoulda known first time round.

Just to hammer home on the point about road construction playing a part in perpetuating racism, especially in the south, has anyone ever noticed how in you'll often see highways running directly through poorer neighborhoods? That was because they were predominantly black neighborhoods, so the government was more willing to break up these neighborhoods and separate them into two halves. On top of that, it led to a really devastating effect on the economic health in those areas because, before highways, to get where you were going, you'd have to stop in that neighborhood, buy food, drinks, gas, and get a place to sleep. However, with the construction of the highways, those people that would've stayed in the town for a night and bought from local places were now able to completely bypass these neighborhoods, whether because they had enough gas to keep going, or because its a predominantly black area, more conscious racists would purposefully continue on to the next town to avoid it altogether. It also leads to the problem of being able to use highways as an easy dividing line when gerrymandering, which often leads to one side of the highway being richer and the other side being poorer.

The argument that "slavery actually impeded industrial development in the South" is even more ridiculous when you think about it... the reason why it impeded industrial growth is because the wealthy slaveowners resisted industrialization. Think about it... if you're a rich guy who owns a huge farm full of unpaid workers, are you going to want to give all of that up to pay for building a factory, filling it with paid workers and raw materials to process, and dealing with distribution and supply chains and other economic factors? OF COURSE NOT. You're already making buckets of money selling cotton, tobacco, sugar, etc.
It's exactly the same as how we can't get green technology advanced because petroleum companies, and coal companies, and automobile manufacturers fight tooth and nail against it. Wealthy capitalist interests oppose it, so the technology does not get a chance to advance.

I've had people ask me what I thought about the 1619 project and I've said 'I think it has some issues' and, of course, they immediately start going off like the guy in this video.
And it's just like, NO. Also, why are we friends? I really wish they had been more careful because it's exhausting to critique the thing without attracting swarms of closeted racists.
