      True, but that has never been their ideology. By their ideology, and all the laws of Gods and men...there is only one true and rightful King. We all know his name is Stannis Baratheon! In the one true story of ASOIAF, he lives and although those who should pray for and bless him,STILL have no love for him, he serves HIS realm. He does his duty.

    I think that GRRM has overwhelmed himself with the size of the task and is reluctant to finish it. If he wanted to he could have published it by now but he decided to prioritise fire and blood and dunk and egg. I hope that he does get to publish the final 2 books as cannot allow the awful final season of the show to be the only ending we have for he GOT saga.

    As a writer, albeit not a novelist, I think I understand the biggest issue GRRM has had all these years...when it comes to writing a decent story, usually the penultimate part of it is the most difficult to write because you have to map out EVERYTHING correctly since there's no going back...
    In the past when GRRM had any idea he wished to explore or let sit on he could just say "oh well, guess I'll just put it in the next book", but now he can't do that anymore...what he does in Winds is the final sprint before the finale, Spring is the part where he has to close all the storylines, I wouldn't be surprised if he has written out (or at least heavily outlined) a good amount of "A Dream of Spring" just to make sure his pacing is on par and he doesn't leave anything to chance

    • @-zSoloSz-
      @-zSoloSz- 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes I agree. He has already set up alot of what's going to happen in the next book with the multiple battles to write, the aftermath, aswell as tying it all together in the right way to build toward spring. The task is huge and when he pulls it off its going to be glorious.

    I’ve always hoped the messy Stark ruler ship problem would be worked out in the most elevated and kind manner possible…Everyone else loses their lives and homes by not realizing they have to work together as a pack and each offer their different abilities. Can’t one House take the higher ground? Jon has the command experience, Sansa is the diplomatic face, Arya is the faceless assassin, Rickon has the full Warg power, and Bran has the web connection. If they band together they are a full package.

  • @OneOnOne1162
    @OneOnOne1162 2 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    23:06 - In my opinion almost the entire book is a gigantic Meereenese Knot. I think that's a big reason for why it has taken Martin such a long time. The same problem he had with the Meereenese Knot he now has to solve again except this time it's for all of Winds. Aegon and Cersei's plotlines likely have to come together, Victarion's and Tyrion's, Dany's and Tyrions, Jon's and Sansa's (probably), Arya has to come back to Westeros at some point (but when?), etc. Dany's storyline was the only one with a Meereenese Knot in Dance but in Winds almost every storyline will have its own Meereenese Knot because a lot of storylines have to be brought back together since this is the penultimate book. But the final book the storylines have to have been wittled down already for it to work. I think really people looking at how long it took George to write other books like Dance and Feast and trying to deduce from that how long it'll take for Winds to be finished are making a mistake. I think if you want an accurate estimate you have to look at how long it took George to complete the Meereenese Knot and Dany and Barristan's chapters specifically in Dance, and then multiply that by how many different storylines have to come together in Winds and then add a little bit of extra writing time for the other stuff. And I think THEN you can get a pretty accurate estimate (minus distractions slowing George down).

    Geoge R.R. Martin elaborated on the "hold the door" moment in James Hibberd's book, as more of a "hold the passage" moment. So I wonder about the stone bridge that Bran describes in Bloodraven's cave. The slender stone bridge that arcs over the chasm, reminds me of Gandalf's last stand against the Balrog.
    We may have an example of what holding the passage would look like, when Bran-co encounter the wights outside Bloodraven's cave and Bran/Hodor join, to fight the wights and turn the tide.

    Fun stream to get back to the main series here. Too many concepts to name in terms of what i and many others want to see play out in TWoW. A somewhat under the radar concept the whole fAegon taking Storm's End does fascinate me a bit. It was mentioned in the stream the Castellan being mad at Stannis but i am not sure that is enough to hand it over to fAegon who many may doubt his identity and claim. And SE is a notoriously tough stronghold to take / resist a siege no less.
    A bit tinfoil but given fAegon / his faction do have a history and propensity of bringing ousted Westerosi (often formerly prominent) in the fold ; they may have come across and brought Edric Storm onside in Essos as part of their plan to take Storm's End. Force would not take such a stronghold so quickly but the promise of Edric being installed who was / is so locally beloved there and believe raised at SE may have facilitated it. Could be tinfoil but look forward to seeing the particulars with how fAegon takes SE.

    • @AlexBB77
      @AlexBB77 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I very much like this theory Andrew. Storm's End is very tough to take , let alone that quickly. So finding someone like Edric Storm which as you mentioned fits into a similar profile of many the fAegon's faction is working with , with Westerosi (often exiled) Jon Con , Rolly Duckfield (many in the Golden Company in general), assuming Septa Lemore among others (Darkstar also it seems if / when he joins up likely on the run at that point) all fit that mold. So Edric does line up with someone they would / could bring in and use in the way you are suggesting. And given his former status and connections to Storm's End i do think what you are theorizing is possible and could be how they took such a stronghold so quickly and seemingly somewhat easily.

      I think we will see a lot of diplomacy from Faegon's camp, and this will build the conflict in comparing him and Dany. Yes, the Golden Company stormed Griffin's Roost, but perhaps that's just to legitimize their invasion to the Westerosi, who after all understand force much more clearly than diplomacy. After that first blitz, I can see them shifting gears in a major way, and in doing so shift the entire tone of their faction in the eyes of the lords and smallfolk alike. They will be beloved by the people, but diplomacy will cause massive division amongst the lords.

    I do think Dany's menses have returned and she is capable of chilbearing. Miiri Maaz Duur's curse sound less like a curse and more like a very cryptic telling of signs and portents in that she describes "when" things will occur. Not unlike the AA prophecy - when the stars bleed, etc. The stumbling block is when the sun rises in the west and sets in the east; which can never happen, unless you mistake the moon for the sun. This happens when Tyrion sees the monstrous blood bruised moon and asks Moqorro if the sunrise has moved to the West (ADWD). So the signs may be observed by POV characters other than Dany. A blood moon eclipse is an ominous sign and certainly has Benerro exercised.
    The Dothraki seas drying up at the end of summer seems fairly obvious. Mountains blowing in the wind like leaves may refer to the pyramids in Mereen burnt and blowin ash in the wind. So it seems likely that Dany will bear another living child.
    I'm also on board with the idea that Dany's ultimate sacrifice "for love", for her child and for humanity, will involve lighting the last fire. That she will play out the role of Nissa Nissa and her soul will ascend. She will see Drogo as he was the last time, his soul ascending from the funeral pyre. A bittersweet ending.

    In my opinion, Faceless men's agenda in Oldtown library has not so much to do with killing people for good but protecting the book that supposedly contains instructions on how to kill dragons. Yes, they are kind of obsessed with death, but the first thing you learn about them is that they are the most expensive, infallable assasins in existance, and the second is the story of their origin: the story about the gift of death, them being descendants of slaves who absolutely loathe this practice and are using all their power and means to bring it down. Dany's dragons are the key element in breaking slavemasters, however they are still young and vulnerable and too many people want them dead, inucluding the current owners of the book- measters (they were supposedly involved in previous extermination of dragons). Why else it is so heavily implied that the book called The death of dragons in under the key and that very key falls into the hands of Faceless men?

    So the thought just hit me. JonCon isn't a show character, yet has greyscale. Jorah in the show gets greyscale, yet does not (thus far) in the books. Could it be they combined storylines a bit? Could it be JonCon that Sam cures of greyscale at the Citadel or elsewhere, instead of Jorah? Part of me doesn't think that particular plot-point won't happen to SOMEONE in the books, given how much of a plot point it was in the show and how we have Shireen as an example of someone surviving infection.

These sorts of the epic fantasy setting seem to overwhelm authors after a certain point. I’m not angry with George at all. I like the idea that the horn of winter releases the souls of the kings of winter from the Winterfell crypts. Perhaps binding them to the one who blows the horn. I think the horn itself is missing a metal band from the rim since it is not only cracked but the rim is chipped. Replacing the ring would compress the horn and seal the crack. At the moment I think Tormund has the missing ring, which he wears on his arm. He tells Jon he will not give it up and that it has been handed down to him by his father (ADWD). My guess is that Tormund is an ancestor of Joramun and this metal band has been passed down through the generations. Tormund "Horn Blower"may know the meaning of the runes on the band.

    Excellent stream! I’m sad I couldn’t watch it live. I agree with your point that certain beats of s8 will work better in the books because it will not be rushed. My feelings on s8 are that there was nothing wrong with where the characters ended up, the issue was that the endings didn’t feel deserved because it was all so stupidly rushed. They could have done mad queen dany, but instead we had 7 seasons of her trying to not be her father/refusing to go down certain paths only to have in the span of an episode to full on mad queen. We could have had Sansa as queen of the north had they done the Vale story and not the Jayne Pool storyline and show, not tell, that Sansa was surpassing Littlefinger and Cersei at playing the game. You could have had King Bran without it feeling like the show just pulled it out of nowhere. S8 to me ended at ep2, because the rest was just so upsetting to watch the characters we’d been with for 7 seasons get rushed and bs endings. A testament to the amazing acting cast and set crew for seeing it all through

She describes the plant as "a bush...twisted limbs covered in hard green berries". She also says, after biting into it, "tart and chewy, with a bitter aftertaste that seemed familiar to her". Juniper often grows in short, fluffy bushes with twisted branches. The berries in early fall are green, as Dany describes. The taste can easily be described as tart, with a bitter aftertaste. They are used often as spice in cooking, but eating handfuls of them will make you sick. Specifically, it causes nausea and diarrhea. And, most importantly to the point: they're an herbal abortifacient. An hour after she eats them she gets sick and can't keep going. She has the dream, and when she wakes up she has gotten her period. She clearly states that it has been about two months and it's the wrong time of the cycle. She has worse cramps and a heavier flow. It's a miscarriage. Or, rather, an accidential abortion...or the world's most coincidence-y coincidence.

      This was fascinating! Of course juniper berries are used in making gin. Also a great lawn alternative if you get the right type of it that stays SHORT! Creeping Juniper means you can get rid of your lawnmower!
      I had thought that whole scene was there to see Dany learning a lesson, just because she sees birds eating the berries does NOT mean a human can eat them.
      Sure, she got her period early, but women can go off cycle when ill.

    • @kyidyl
      @kyidyl 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@eric2500 you have to be REALLY ill for it to mess with your cycle, especially if you're as regular as her (that she is regular is implied by the fact that her period happens in the same phase of the moon every time.). Regardless, she doesn't get sick until after eating the berries. Before that she's only that like vaguely uncomfortable feeling you get when you drink water on an empty stomach and then engage in physical activity (like walking for miles.).

    Ramsey wrote the pink letter, he just wrote it on false information provided to him by the manderly's, because the manderly's and stannis destroyed the Frey soldiers on the lake, then stannis gave his sword to the manderly's who returned to Winterfell claiming victory and that they destroyed stannis and provided his sword as proof, then based on that information, ramsey wrote the pink letter....but stannis is still alive and going to sneak attack winterfell when the manderly's secretly let him in the back door.....Mance however, is dead.
    I think the theory that mance wrote the letter is....really dumb for lack of a better phrase.....it makes absolutely no sense within the story and absolutely no sense on a meta level outside the story

    From the livestream chat; Reflective Rambling wants to see Arya / Mercy play in a serious drama, not just a farce. Cool idea, especially for anyone who has ever been nibbled on, let alone bitten, by the acting bug!
    However, a farce - or a serious drama - with the Tyrion like character as a villain is going to be a hit in Cersei's Kings Landing, maybe even at Court- if some playwright in the company, much in the manner of Shakespeare and his predecessors, change up the play a little bit and take it on the road.
    The company will head out on tour of the Free Cities and then Westeros!

Thanks for the insight on the Faceless Men, I hadn't thought about it from the point of view of them being actually part of what Westeros needs right now with all the raising of wights going on. So is there a question/point here of how Arya will deal/cope with both Jon and Caitlyn, as they will be wights, if she is even partly indoctrinated by the Faceless Men? And it does seem to make more sense to me now why she was the one to kill the Night King in the show...

  • @OneOnOne1162

    32:16 - I think for Euron the place that I start off at is the assumption that Euron is one of the only people in the setting who truly understands how magic works and his plans reflect that.
    Personally, I am of the belief that magic in ASoIaF works on a combination of belief and sacrifice. One has to believe that a sacrifice is valuable and the more people believe a sacrifice is valuable the more powerful it is and then one has to believe in the effects as well. I think the praying priests Euron ties to his ships are the element of belief and I think the priests, the ships themselves (and the people on them) from both fleets will be the sacrifice. And I think Euron will then use this magical power released to "become a god" in his words.
    Now what that actually means is up to interpretation. You could take it literally but I don't think that's the most likely.
    Personally, I think Sam has the Horn of Winter. The Horn of Winter is currently broken but Euron's grand sacrifice will generate the magical power required to fix the horn. Then I think Sam will blow the horn to sound the alarm of the Ironborn coming from the top of the Hightower (or on the roof of the Citadel) and it will unexpectedly (since he doesn't know what it truly is) generate an earthquake which will destroy the rest of Euron's fleet and tear down the walls of Oldtown. Then I think Euron will claim the horn from Sam and by the end of the book I think Euron will make it to Eastwatch where he will blow the Horn of Winter a second time and thereby tear down The Wall with the resulting earthquake.
    How does that relate to him becoming a god? I think in Euron's conception his ability to bring down cities with a blast of his horn and bring down the wall to end the entire world counts as him "being a god" as he has the same arbitrary and extreme power that a god might have and everyone else is at his mercy. I think it's that arbitrary and extreme power over everyone that he refers to when he talks about "being a god."

      Euron doesn't believe in anything. Euron killed his brother and pissed in the ocean to prove there is no god. He is torturing these people to open their minds to the astral plain. It's very Oden like where great sacrifice is necessary for great power.
