      Have you bought a proper tripod yet? At least with the little one on the table, you demonstrate that things move a lot more than people realize!
      Oh, hey, while I'm at it, are there any "cardinal sins" to avoid using fresh bread? Such as making French Toast (lost bread) or bread pudding with something yo baked the day before, in stead of using a slightly stale loaf?

    Big thanks for this video Jack. For several years I've used a 30.5cm Hygiplas serrated slicer knife because I baked loaves which were big and the usually available bread knives were a bit short. The trouble was it is sharp pointed and tended to rip into the bread. Since seeing this video, I checked out the Victorinox bread knife and the alternative round ended pastry knife against other knives. This was at Nisbets catering shop. Just by feeling the edges of different makes I could tell that the Victorinox was ultra sharp, smooth and flowing. I asked for one as a birthday present recently and used it yesterday for the first time. Absolutely brilliant. It went through the bread, which was made yesterday, sooo easily - a new experience.
    By the way, although I'm recommending Nisbets and Victorinox I have no connection with either. I'm in my 70s and retired.

    Jack, this is absolutely brilliant. I made my very first loaf of bread this week and was having a really hard time trying to slice it, most of my slices ending up shredded, uneven or super thick. I used the tips from your video and can't believe the difference just a few simple techniques can make to slicing, this has completely changed the result and I've now cut several perfect slices like a pro. Thanks for posting, I'm now subbed. Cheers!

    Hey Jack - To preserve freshness I slice a loaf of bread from the middle, never from the end. After cutting the amount of slices needed (from both halves to keep things symmetric) simply bring the two partial loaves’ cut ends together and wrap the “loaf” firmly in plastic film. It will have the appearance of a whole loaf, albeit smaller, and will remain fresher longer.

    • @Bakewithjack
      @Bakewithjack  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice tip, and yes, keeping things symmetrical and s a MUST 🤯

    I want thank you so very much for showing me how to properly slice bread. I’ve been frustrated that I couldn’t seem to consistently slice bread evenly - some slices we’re thicker on the bottom or top, or one side would be thicker than the other and sometimes perfect, yet I couldn’t be consistent and didn’t know why. From watching your video I figured out that I was cutting on my island counter - which was too high, and that my feet were not solidly grounded. After correcting the height to a lower table and setting my feet and body correctly I just cut a whole loaf with 90% looking evenly sliced! You are the best!

      Bake with Jack Me, too! I actually love being left-handed.
      I learned another tip that has served me well for years. When you are slicing, keep your eye on the loaf, not on the slice. This will give you an even slice every time. Works for cheese, too, and anything else you cut slices from, such as a log or a block. (Thinking cheese or meat here, not wood,) ☺️

    A very useful video, well presented as always.
    My bread knife was bought by my mum in 1966. It has the same serrations as yours, though not curved. Every so often I give it a few licks with the Steel.
    I do use a glass board though and will be looking into buying a wooden one, specifically for bread.

  • @Norollo
    @Norollo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yesss... this video serves the purpose... with all the humour and everything... and the sound of the old bread is adding more fun to it.

  • @KnippenbergKnives
    @KnippenbergKnives 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If you are really particular about the texture of the slices, you could use a very(!) sharp chefs knife (no serrations) and little pressure the make the crust and inside crumb look even cleaner. Serrated knifes leave a little rough surface, compared to an knife without serrations (especially the pointed serrations), but do cut a loaf of bread easier and quicker.

    Before seeing this I thought a bread knife was a bread knife, is there really any difference between them. Then when I saw yours go through that loaf with ease compared to mine that hacked and tore my beautiful creation I decided to upgrade. My new knife may have cost more than my current knife block set but it really is worth it. Cuts perfectly and precisely each time, even a 3 day old loaf. A must have for home bakers!

    A small coffee shop orders their sourdough bread from me and they like it sliced. I make an 8” square loaf and I have a heck of a time getting the slices nice and even. I will apply these tips and hopefully improve my method. They serve avocado toast on the bread and order between 6-9 loaves each week.

    I answered and said, "If I have found favor in thy sight, O Lord, show this also to thy servant: whether after death, as soon as every one of us yields up his soul, we shall be kept in rest until those times come when thou wilt renew the creation, or whether we shall be tormented at once?" 76 He answered me and said, "I will show you that also, but do not be associated with those who have shown scorn, nor number yourself among those who are tormented. 77 For you have a treasure of works laid up with the Most High; but it will not be shown to you until the last times.
    78 Now, concerning death, the teaching is: When the decisive decree has gone forth from the Most High that a man shall die, as the spirit leaves the body to return again to him who gave it, first of all it adores the glory of the Most High. 79 And if it is one of those who have shown scorn and have not kept the way of the Most High, and who have despised his law, and who have hated those who fear the Most High -- 80 such spirits shall not enter into habitations, but shall immediately wander about in torments, ever grieving and sad, in seven ways.
    81 The first way, because they have scorned the law of the Most High. 82 The second way, because they cannot now make a good repentance that they may live. 83 The third way, they shall see the reward laid up for those who have trusted the covenants of the Most High. 84 The fourth way, they shall consider the torment laid up for themselves in the last days. 85 The fifth way, they shall see how the habitations of the others are guarded by angels in profound quiet. 86 The sixth way, they shall see how some of them will pass over into torments. 87 The seventh way, which is worse than all the ways that have been mentioned, because they shall utterly waste away in confusion and be consumed with shame, and shall wither with fear at seeing the glory of the Most High before whom they sinned while they were alive, and before whom they are to be judged in the last times.
    88 "Now this is the order of those who have kept the ways of the Most High, when they shall be separated from their mortal body. 89 During the time that they lived in it, they laboriously served the Most High, and withstood danger every hour, that they might keep the law of the Lawgiver perfectly. 90 Therefore this is the teaching concerning them: 91 First of all, they shall see with great joy the glory of him who receives them, for they shall have rest in seven orders.
    92 The first order, because they have striven with great effort to overcome the evil thought which was formed with them, that it might not lead them astray from life into death. 93 The second order, because they see the perplexity in which the souls of the unrighteous wander, and the punishment that awaits them. 94 The third order, they see the witness which he who formed them bears concerning them, that while they were alive they kept the law which was given them in trust. 95 The fourth order, they understand the rest which they now enjoy, being gathered into their chambers and guarded by angels in profound quiet, and the glory which awaits them in the last days. 96 The fifth order, they rejoice that they have now escaped what is corruptible, and shall inherit what is to come; and besides they see the straits and toil from which they have been delivered, and the spacious liberty which they are to receive and enjoy in immortality. 97 The sixth order, when it is shown to them how their face is to shine like the sun, and how they are to be made like the light of the stars, being incorruptible from then on. 98 The seventh order, which is greater than all that have been mentioned, because they shall rejoice with boldness, and shall be confident without confusion, and shall be glad without fear, for they hasten to behold the face of him whom they served in life and from whom they are to receive their reward when glorified.
    99 This is the order of the souls of the righteous, as henceforth is announced; and the aforesaid are the ways of torment which those who would not give heed shall suffer hereafter." 100 I answered and said, "Will time therefore be given to the souls, after they have been separated from the bodies, to see what you have described to me?" 101 He said to me, "They shall have freedom for seven days, so that during these seven days they may see the things of which you have been told, and afterwards they shall be gathered in their habitations."
    102 I answered and said, "If I have found favor in thy sight, show further to me, thy servant, whether on the day of judgment the righteous will be able to intercede for the unrighteous or to entreat the Most High for them, 103 fathers for sons or sons for parents, brothers for brothers, relatives for their kinsmen, or friends for those who are most dear." 104 He answered me and said, "Since you have found favor in my sight, I will show you this also. The day of judgment is decisive and displays to all the seal of truth. Just as now a father does not send his son, or a son his father, or a master his servant, or a friend his dearest friend, to be ill or sleep or eat or be healed in his stead, 105 so no one shall ever pray for another on that day, neither shall any one lay a burden on another; for then every one shall bear his own righteousness and unrighteousness." 2 Esdras 2:31

      A good bread knife doesn't have to be the most expensive bread knife. See: th-cam.com/video/GWewefvCZXM/w-d-xo.html

    I've been shopping for "bread slicer" while eating my wonky doorstops sandwich. After reading the reviews and saw the price, I've decided to Google "How to cut homemade bread evenly without a bread slicer", then your video popped up. I've watched it twice and eager to try implementing your method next week. I was so proud of the bread I've made but crushed when i ruined the slices.

    What 3-10 videos would you recommend first for the ABSOLUTE BEGINNER? Obviously this is one of them, but which other videos of yours would you recommend as essentials before I try making bread?

    Thank you for making this video! Even 4 years later it's helping teach us that don't know how to do things properly. Quick saving this for later when I cut my first loaf tonight!

    Do you have a video to teach me to properly spread my butter? 😂😂😂😂 (I still suck at cutting my bread, even with your excellent instructions.)

    So thats what i was doing wrong all my life. I kept the knife upside-down on the board and the dragged the loaf on top of it. Then rotate the loaf until all sides got cut. Then theres the middle bit that the knife couldn't reach, just tear it off. Some slices have a thick middle bit, some dont.

    Actually… that is a little bit wonky…. 🤣🤣🤣 you are my FAVORITE!

    And if you mess up some slices, don't throw it away. Blitz it in the food processor for breadcrumbs or freeze it ready for a bread and butter pudding.

    Slicing bread and getting the slices not too thin, not too thick, not wonky, has been a challenge. Going to try to find a knife like that. I've purchased so called "bread" knives (3 in fact) and they're horrible!

      Quite right, the normally are! Google a pastry knife 👍🏻

    While the Victorinox is a nice knife, I don’t care that it’s much thinner near the tip than the handle. It’s easy for the blade to bend and flex during the cut. My last bread knife didn’t have this problem.

    I'm learning loads of stuff watching these videos! Thanks so much for all the effort you've gone to! PS: When you say "YESS!" you remind me of Brain from "Pinky and the Brain" :)

    Thanks Jack! I needed this video cos I am having trouble slicing my homemade sourdough. I realise it’s my dodgy bread knife and hv been wanting to get a proper good one. But I nvr know which to get. Thanks to ur video now I know. Do u hv tips on how to sharpen the knife or is it not necessary?

    • @arjenav5968
      @arjenav5968 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sharpening is rarely necessary with serrated knives, given "normal" home bread usage, not sawing through bone etc. It can be done though, google for 'sharpening serrated knives' or something like that.
