Dear Eva, you can spend a whole weekend on youtube and listen to all the Glitters and be Gay examples, from the serious ones to the funny ones, the extreme good ones and the less, ranging from Barbara Cook and Mary Costa to Patricia Petitbon and Evah Destruction. And I also enjoy Dessay, Damrau and Deveilhe. But for me , maybe vocally not the best, but certainly the funniest one is the Norwegian soprano EIR INDERHAUG. She beats them all in humor. But let's enjoy them all , as the song is a hell of a job ! And there are many flowers in the field that we should all enjoy. ! Greetings from the Netherlands.
Glitter And Be Gay Leonard Bernstein Glitter and be gay, That's the part I play; Here I am in Paris, France, Forced to bend my soul To a sordid role, Victimized by bitter, bitter circumstance. Alas for me! Had I remained Beside my lady mother, My virtue had remained unstained Until my maiden hand was gained By some Grand Duke or other. Ah, 'twas not to be; Harsh necessity Brought me to this gilded cage. Born to higher things, Here I droop my wings, Ah! Singing of a sorrow nothing can assuage. And yet of course I rather like to revel, I have no strong objection to champagne, My wardrobe is expensive as the devil, Perhaps it is ignoble to complain... Enough, enough Of being basely tearful! I'll show my noble stuff By being bright and cheerful! Pearls and ruby rings... Ah, how can worldly things Take the place of honor lost? Can they compensate For my fallen state, Purchased as they were at such an awful cost? Bracelets...lavalieres Can they dry my tears? Can they blind my eyes to shame? Can the brightest brooch Shield me from reproach? Can the purest diamond purify my name? And yet of course these trinkets are endearing, I'm oh, so glad my sapphire is a star, I rather like a twenty-carat earring, If I'm not pure, at least my jewels are! Enough! Enough! I'll take their diamond necklace And show my noble stuff By being gay and reckless! Observe how bravely I conceal The dreadful, dreadful shame I feel.
I'm not going to argue whether her Glitter and Be Gay is superior or not but I will say this...was the director intoxicated? What the hell are those camera movements? Especially the extreme close ups! It's so distracting!
Sorry. Neither Deviehlhe not Natalie. This queen of this aria is June Anderson. It's no coincidence Bernstein, this aria composer, chose her to sing it
I guess you are right Nasinico that Dessay nailed in 1997. But there are many flowers in the field and I enjoy many, as this song is a hell of a job. DeVeilhe does it extremey well and I don't see her "copy" Dessay, which one could expect. For fun: listen to the Norwegian soprano EIR INDERHAUG, they cannot all be "the best", but funny she is !
Ankle Donna oh I understand and Candide is an American musical. It’s just in opera UK accents are more vowel friendly than US, especially with that rhotic r.
The gold standard is Natalie Dessay Glyndebourne 1997 actually. Chenoweth has nothing on her. I uploaded Sabine's performance because I love her voice, but Dessay is the absolute best, her performance unmatched.
@@thaiss6947 I am not that limited in what moves me. She can not help that she is under five feet. She was blessed with a warm, flexible voice with a most personable stage presence. This is what she was given when she first entered this world and boy does she know how to use it.
@@thaiss6947 That is where you and I differ very, very much. I too have a trained voice. I took have sung in operas. What I am not is a snob when it come to the crossing of opera, operetta and musical theatre. They are all there to be enjoyed. When I listen to Candide, I hear a range of voice types all of which blend nicely for a total musical experience especially in Chenowith’s production. My advice is to chill out. You continue to enjoy your preferences and I will continue to enjoy what appeals to me. As was said in the recent movie, Everything, Everywhere All at Once,v “Just be Kind”.
Natalie's performance in Glynebourne was a once in a life time experience and her acting skills are yet unmatched to me. I suppose we'll have to wait a bit more to find a singer able to challenge Natalie's acting, though I think Sabine deserve the praise for her work and dedication. Being French, soprano and coming right after Natalie? Kudos to her.
its very difficult not to copy, so even more chapeau for those who have a try. I think Sabine does it extremely well and I did not see and hear she copied. Of course she saw Dessay on TH-cam too! But she did not copy Dessay, she tried to attack the role, which is difficult enough! I too love Dessay, and maybe she is the standard, but can and do appreciate others. My mother always said: You can still dance on a wedding, If not with the bride! By the way: listen to the Norwegian soprano EIR INDERHAUG. She might not be the top, but for me she is the most funny one. The variety on TH-cam is enormous, you can spend evenings listening to maybe 100 versions! Enjoy it! Greetings from the Netherlands.
Following your advice I watched Petibon's version on that Festival: I must confess that I find it the most vulgar of all versions that I have seen on YT. Vocally there is nothing extraordinary about it, some pitch issues and shrill high notes; scenically, over the top. My humble opinion
She's is a glorious singer but this is not her thing. No opportunity to show off how fine her singing is. The recit sections are horribly slow and... im afraid she's just not funny. Ive done this show a million times and I actually think every other soprano I've worked with was better in the aria.
I love this woman. Beautiful, powerful, charismatic, talented. What more can you ask for? Love her
What a classy and beautiful woman with a gorgeous and powerful coloratura.
Sabine’s agility is otherworldly.

Extraordinaire, Magnifique, Bravissima sabine
Wonderful! Just wonderful!
absolutely terrific
magnifique interpretation
Excellent, j’adore 🥰. Bravo 🌺👏🌺

I think Dessay is by far the best …
She is a Goddess!
Bravissima!!! I'm one of your admirer
Dessay was mesmerizing, and Sabine here's also fantastic. But please don't forget there was also Diana Damrau's totally different Cunegonde in blue)

I love her voice though.

Everyone is free to have their opinion. To me, Natalie nailed it at Glynnebourne in 97. You prefer June Anderson. To each their own ;)

The way this is a performance and not a competition???
Interesting stilist choices
Interesting pronunciation choices. She's decided on a US accent as opposed to U.K.
@Alex Daniel
The choice of accent is appropriate, as Bernstein is American.
Ankle Donna oh I understand and Candide is an American musical. It’s just in opera UK accents are more vowel friendly than US, especially with that rhotic r.
It's HaHaHahahah. The Hs are supposed to be sung. She's laughing, not singing staccato notes.
The gold standard is Kristen Chenowth. Has enough camp, fun, and virtuosity. Having the range is not enough.
The gold standard is Natalie Dessay Glyndebourne 1997 actually. Chenoweth has nothing on her. I uploaded Sabine's performance because I love her voice, but Dessay is the absolute best, her performance unmatched.
@@Nasinico I respectfully disagree. Do not care for Natalie. To each his own.

No one beats Glynebourne-Natalie Dessay in this. Everybody else after her are just copycats.
