Yup. The addition of the GT trim says it all. They’re trying to get people who would be buying sporty CUVs into the WRX. Everything about the design of this car appears to be done to appeal to them. All the more confusing there’s no hatchback to at least help this make more sense. This would maybe work for tweener hot hatch/CUV. But not for a damn base trim WRX sedan.
@@marcusmcneal7453 The thing is it makes less sense for Subaru to be doing this when they already have sporty cuv types of cars including in the Impreza line-up and makes less, less sense when you realise they've gone and given most models their 'global' platform anyways, which started with the Impreza in 2016 I think? So, basically they already have this without killing off the WRX's core fanbase/buyers.

@Intercepting Fist Are you kidding? Or are you actually that stupid?? So like lol, they changed a whole bunch of things and made it way cooler. Is that what you wanted to hear? They changed and addressed all the weak points of the EJ that have had complaints from owners and year on year strengthened them in all the key areas and that to you ‘isn’t much?’ The interior is far far nicer on newer ones with the materials they used and it was pretty bad they weren’t keyless start back in 2017 but are now. Wheels are 19” and I’m not sure if all the headlamps have always been all LED but they are now, and the exterior front bumper got a slight facelift too. Idiot.
@Tony Sanchez the 2017 still had all the inherent problems the EJ had which have now been addressed. And the interior is so much nicer in newer ones. Im glad I have a 2021 STI and is going to remain untuned and unmodified and super low kms and will hold ots value remarkably well
The front looks sick. And considering it's an impreza, it's really nice they gave it its own look to set it apart from the economy car and the lifted impreza too (Crossstrek).
It's like they had different designers for the front, rear, and sides and made them all work without being able to see what the others were doing, and never told them it was a WRX.

My 2012 WRX recently threw a rod while on the interstate @ 77k miles. After having the vehicle looked at by a Subaru technician, they confirmed that the vehicle needed a new short block due to piston ringland failure. I called Subaru of America to see if they could do anything for me given that I had a Certified Pre-Owned warranty from the dealer when I purchased it three years ago. I also did a little research and found that there were THREE separate lawsuits in the past seven years concerning the EJ engine that my WRX housed, all of which ended in a settlement without declaration of fault. When Subaru heard my dilemma they told me that unfortunately they couldn't do anything because the CPO timeframe ended nine months prior to the incident and the litigation warranty window ended at the same time. They then had the audacity to offer me $2,000 off the purchase of a new Subaru. Never again will I own another one of their cars. As much as they like to talk about how they have a loyal fanbase they certainly don't give a shit about them.
What is a certified pre owned warranty and how long does it typically last? I've heard of certified pre owned, but not a warranty that comes with it. It basically just means that the car is basically stock, no modifications. Doesn't the original powertrain warranty expire at 60,000 miles?
Subaru got complacent since Mitsubishi discontinued the EVO. They've lost their competitive edge in this market, especially when compared to the hot hatches the WRX is often pitted against.
@Dr Beechas Most people here in CO, which is a huge Subaru heavy state, buy WRX over Mustangs because of the AWD and 4-doors, RWD coupes are mostly bought by people who have another vehicle for winter. A huge portion of people here Ski/Snowboard and winter in the mtns Mustangs are useless, where in a WRX you can still carry your gear in the back seat and still make it up the Mtn.
@Dr Beechas Camaro sales have tanked so hard that the car is being put on hiatus in 2023, and possibly getting canceled outright. Plans to give the Challenger a new platform were also canceled due to tanking sales (and costs because FCA is eternally poor), although we're still gonna get a new Challenger next year. The only one unaffected is the Mustang, and only because it sells well enough overseas that sales are still effectively going up, not down. So no, none of the muscle cars beg to differ.

Seems like now would be a good time for Nissan to drop a new Sentra SE-R, or even better, a Spec V with a manual, LSD, and at least 250hp on tap...the new generation Sentra is a really nicely designed car, and Nissan could seriously challenge Subaru if they gave it some serious grunt under the hood...
@@ThaDentMan I had a 2004, and it hardly ever skipped a beat. I'm always disappointed with Subaru's final product as far as looks go. I really enjoy driving my 2020 WRX, however its not exactly an artistic masterpiece. Subaru needs to start making their production models look more like their concepts. The last couple of times they've shown a concept, it looks amazing. Sadly by the time the production model comes out, we get something that looks more at home in any given airport rental lot. How can they show a car as beautiful, as the Viziv, and then be proud to present and sell a car that looks like if a Honda Element, and a Civic had a baby? And then to have the "flag ship" model only come with a rubber band for a transmission? Maybe they've got a surprise awaiting us when they reveal the STI...Fingers crossed.
I could not agree less looked at the concept for this and went is not that bad it looks kind nice and then disappointed hop they can fix it with the 2023
I miss it solely for the sake of keeping Subaru on its toes. Now they are flat footed and breaking their own ankles trying to dribble the ball past the half court line.
My first WRX is a 2017 and I call it my compromise car. It's a nice car overall. It's as fast as my 87 Supra was, which is nice for a daily driver, but has AWD so I can drive it in bad weather, I live in Mass so snow is a regular thing. Overall it handles pretty well, well enough to enjoy driving it. But there's not enough here for me to consider the 2022 WRX as a upgrade. The front isn't that different from the 2017 and I like it okay, but that ass is bad, I don't like it one bit. I'm excited for the new Z, I might get that and deal with the disadvantages of owning one, like snow and not being kid friendly lol. As for the new 2.4 engine, I think I would like that, the 2.0 needs its turbo too much. If I've been sitting at a light too long and forget to spool the turbo the car has a hard time moving. The 2.4 might just be more engine and less turbo which I think would be a quality of driving improvement, but I don't know why they just didn't go with bigger motor and turbo and boost HP to over 300.
huyndai has been absolutely killing it lately. All the people defending toyota's horrible decisions, claiming "its just not possible this day and age to make sports cars" and yet huyndai comes around with substantially less money and puts out hit after hit after hit. The genesis was beautiful, the stinger didnt sell well but was instantly a buzz in the car community, the veloster N was a game changer hot hatch for budget minded people, i30n was amazing but we never got that, and the elantra N looks very impressive. All they need now is to hurry up and make another genesis coupe. Or drop the genesis brand and just make a spiritual successor rwd turbo manual coupe.
Was that a slight against hatchbacks? ... .. The FA had too much boost for factory rods. Maybe subie engineers were scared of another FA problem? I think the sti will have the stops pulled and will have quite a bit more power unless they roll in slow and see how it holds up in the current configuration to increase output on the following year model. Anyway, I'm happy I sold my wrx with low miles and grabbed a jeep instead of playing wait and see for a hatch back.
@Bryce Czirr this wrx model literally made me stop wanting a wrx over my A3 (turbo charged 4 cylinder AWD) said that so I don’t sound like the guy flexing a Lexus lmao
As an Aussie and we have had ever WRX/STI from day dot like the Japanese, this is the only maker and model that has actually got worse with every subsequent model. Yes the original ones were low rent inside, but they were light and genuinely edgy to drive, this looks like an SUV with basically the same power they had 27 years ago........ I have owned two but not for a long time. Would be last car on a long list if I was still at this end of the market.
Not just the gd chassis but the whole line. I currently own a 07 sti that I’m face swapping into a bugeye. And I have a 2001 forester s. You could get both the legacy and Impreza as a hatch / outback trim. Idk why but I just love every Subaru up to 2008.
The good news - this could be very good with a few inexpensive improvements. Subaru could easily change to painted fenders, and there might even be potential for a wide body package. Agree with everyone saying the lack of power increase is probably due to CVT limitations. Another easy fix for subaru/ tuners to fix for the 6MT in a refresh. GR Corolla might light a fire under them to make necessary changes for the STI.
Toyota pretty much announced were getting a GR Corolla with just under 300HP a 6-speed and drivetrain from the Yaris. That will be the new subcompact performance standard

@@evozero905 Why's that? Aren't they both JDM hot hatches? Probably similarly priced too, no? I agree with the Yaris, but the Corolla is about the same size as the Civic
Here's my take on the whole situation as someone that worked as a Subaru tech a few years back. The 6 speed in this (most likely) and the outgoing generation WRX is more or less the 5 speed glass box that's been in every WRX since the beginning with a larger extension housing on the back with an extra gear. Basically the transmissions are limiting the horsepower Subaru is willing to turn out of that 2.4 as neither the 6 speed or the cvt can handle much more hp or tq reliably enough for production. I'd be willing to bet money that when the sti is announced it's going to have the same 2.4L with a different turbo cranking out a decent amount more power as the sti 6 speed is a much stronger unit. It's also probably going to have different bumpers and those wheel arches will be color matched. It feels like this is all a ploy to upsell potential WRX "enthusiast" buyers into the more expensive sti, hence why the gt model is only offered as a cvt, if you want all the "race car" feeling things AND a manual you better fork over the extra cash.
@@cuddysendsit3043 and I made over 300 whp in my old bugeye without grenading the 5 speed but there's a difference between reliable in a tuning aspect and reliable as far as a manufacturer is concerned. They need a very large percentage of every WRX produced to make it well past the warranty period without any transmission issues. And with that much more hp in the hands of every idiot with a good credit score they can't guarantee that. The same way most vehicle lifts are underrated by about 50%, sure you can pick up a 15k lb truck on a 10k lb lift no problem. But will every single one produced do that with a near 100% reliability for years? Probably not.
As someone who is majoring in Industrial Design at the moment and aiming to work in the automotive industry, this is probably the single most uninspired WRX design yet. I legit saw this on Instagram and thought it was a lowered Crosstrek before I read the description. That says a lot.
@Roberto Vidal Garcia Older ones are though i had a 92 Legacy for 14 years and only in the last two it gave me trouble. They were great 4WD sedans back then.
@Roberto Vidal Garcia No. GDB era cars used less silicon. 9% in their cast hypoeutectic pistons as opposed to the later model cars which used a higher percentage of 12% , hypereutectic pistons that caused them to become more brittle. The main culprit was the usage of bad gas. Lower octane fuel that caused detonation. I mitigated this with COBB Accessport and a good etun. I also payed close attention to my EGTs and AFRs since I lived in Socal. The land of shitty gas. When my car pulled timing, I was ready with a bottle of Lucas octane booster for a immediate fix.
This might be an unpopular opinion, but I think the WRX design peaked with the bug-eye generation. Every one after that just felt less like a real WRX.
@@shred1894 My previous car was an 03 Impreza RS, the end of that generation. I think that opinion might be more popular than you think. Will the CVT basically make tuning this car impossible? I don't know if people are exaggerating, but heard that adding more power to CVT cars will cause quick, premature transmission failure.
They have to keep the hp numbers low otherwise it would start stepping on STi sales. Think about it. Why would anyone buy an STI that makes 340hp for 8k more when the WRX is making 290-300 stock.
Isn’t the STi supposed to have about 400 hp with the same engine? They could’ve at least pulled 320 hp out of this engine and STi sales would’ve likely been fine

Ok, about the engine and power levels: The reason Subaru have the 2.4L engine with about the same power levels as before is simple: drivability (wall of text below, but going into why they have less power for the amount of displacement) The people buying these cars are not the same as the people that is going to buy them when they get a bit cheaper and start modifying them. Which make it important to have the power where it's most noticeable. If we take a random 2L engine that makes 250PS peak and have 1 bar of boost, the boost start to come on at 2000 rpm and has 1 bar at 3000 rpm. By having 2.5L instead, use the same turbo but lowering the boost down a bit, you will have the same amount of power, weight is still mostly the same since it's most lily going to be stroked up that amount. you will end up with the same horse power, the turbo is will start to come online at 1800 rpm and 0.7bar of boost at 2600rpm. The boost hit is going to be less noticeable and the power before the turbo comes online is going to be better and the perceived as more responsive and easier to drive. and because the turbo is compressing air by a lesser amount(that is if flow rate is good and not restricted) the lower pressure amount is going to keep the intake charge cooler if you have the same intercooler as with the hypothetical 2L engine. This makes it less prone to heat soak. Or going down a bit in size and gain more response. The people buying the car is going to perceive the 2.5L alternative as better since it has the same amount of power peak, but over the whole range it has more while still being more responsive. But than again, there are people that can live the same amount of response as the 2L but having more power thanks to the extra displacement, but those people are not as likely to be the people that buys it from the dealer, which is why we have boring crossovers and SUVs. Because that is what the market want unfortunately :/

@Dr Beechas The Camaro sales tanked, and been tanking.

The only thing I’m mad about is the transmission thing. I actually kind of like the new appearance with the exception of the square fender flares
The GD (02-07) chassis was the golden era of Subaru, and this cross-civic-trek shit is just further proving my point
Not just the gd chassis but the whole line. I currently own a 07 sti that I’m face swapping into a bugeye. And I have a 2001 forester s. You could get both the legacy and Impreza as a hatch / outback trim. Idk why but I just love every Subaru up to 2008.
Remember when they screwed up the WRX hatchback, then fixed it in a refresh with better looks and more power?
Pepperidge farm does.

I hope you are right. The STI is my choice but if Subaru keeps the black plastic cladding and doesn't do a large jump in HP I'm out.
I meannn 2015+ WRX’s can make over 350whp on the stock transmission reliably..

@Roberto Vidal Garcia you bought it used and previously abused?
What do you mean Honda has stepped up it’s game with the Type R? 306 hp in 2021? The Sti has been making that since 2004 🤷🏻♂️🤣
@Roberto Vidal Garcia No.
If people like that can succeed as designers, it gives me hope that I can as well XD

Ok, about the engine and power levels:
The reason Subaru have the 2.4L engine with about the same power levels as before is simple: drivability (wall of text below, but going into why they have less power for the amount of displacement)
The people buying these cars are not the same as the people that is going to buy them when they get a bit cheaper and start modifying them.
So glad I picked up my brand-new 2021 STI Limited back in April below MSRP. I traded my 2019 STI Base for it.
I'm kind of a Subaru hater personally, but I actually really liked the newest STI for some reason. The interior is much improved from the last ones I was in, the STI at least looked pretty good imo, and of course it performed fairly well and was way fun with some mods as long as you don't go too hard, which most people don't. Not a bad rig! This WRX I'm not so sure about though.
@@danielnelson4881 I’m not a fan of Subaru either but mainly because they’re just super unreliable and imo not a very good bang for buck. Boxers just aren’t very good performance engines. They’re good for stock power but anything more than stock and they go boom
How are you liking the STI over the base wrx? Worth the e tea $10kish?
@@franzv3172 It wasn't $10k a Base vs Limited is around $5k diffrence. I am loving the sunroof, power seats, recaros, built-in navigation and upgraded Harmon Kardon audio.

From someone who's owned a 2017 WRX and currently owns a 2005 STI, this car is such massive dissapointment. You were easier on it than I was. I agree with everything you said.
Well this just shows why they say there's no accounting for taste, I like it.
I am so utterly disappointed in Subaru right now. I was genuinely excited to see what they would do with the 2022 model. And as you said, it's a lowered cross track with Civic tail lights. What a complete and utter pile of 💩. I guess I better go look into getting a 2021 WRX or STI while the local dealer still has a couple in stock.
I’ve owned three Subarus and my current one might be my last. I’ll hold my final judgment till I can see the new WRX in person and drive it. 😊
Don’t get your hopes to high
I went from VW to Subaru a few years back. I'm going back to VAG cars.
There was a brand new integra type r that sat rotting at my local acura dealer for 2 years before it finally sold back in the late 90s/early 00s. Some vehicles are just ahead of their time!
I've been planning on trading my 2021 sti in for the next sti. Not so sure anymore.
Don't do it. Your car looks so much better.
Curious what they will do for the sti
Just curious, why were u going to do that anyways? 2021 is a great model and the performance is never improved significantly, why not keep it?
@@DomOfSin666there's been talk of performance going up to around 400hp but my main reason is the new engine, hoping they've fixed the ringland problems. I come from about 10 years of owning two Evos. Id like a more bullet proof engine I can simply bolt parts to and make good power without fear of engine failure.
271hp goes back to that old Japanese gentleman's agreement. Many cars from Japan have claimed 271 while making quite a bit more. I bet the final wrx makes around 300 and the sti close to 400.
This makes me happy Mitsubishi killed the Evo when it did, so it died a legend
Here's hoping they don't bring it back as a crossover.
Except the eclipse.
Good point . Saw a Torana SL5000 over here in OZ this week :) . 5 litre V8 in a small frame . Great car from the 70's :) . It used to be raced at Bathurst.
I’d buy a CrossTrek with a manual transmission and wrx engine. But I wouldn’t buy whatever this thing is trying to be.
Actually, CrossTrek WRX sounds pretty dope
Right on - what you described would be a realization of what the Crosstrek was supposed to be from the beginning. It'd be like a "poor" man's Alfa Romeo Stelvio - only that you could actually take it off-roading.
As a Subaru owner for the last 15 years...I'm super disappointed in this release. It's ugly with little to no improvements.
Great point about there not being a competitor to keep pushing it forward
Golf R, gla-250, civic type R, Veloster N, audi a3/s3, Mercedes a series. Most of which come AWD. People just have it stuck in their head that "rally heritage" means something and that the evo was the only compact awd vehicle it competed with.
I appreciate what you just said at 3:23 I’m a Mazda owner and I like the “Premium” direction the brand is going in. But I hate the fact that Subaru is the only company that makes an AWD manual sedan or hatch.
great way to sell the new BRZ and the aftermarket is gonna love this WRX. it's not gonna stay stock if people do get it.
Do any of them stay stock?
@@SnowWolf9999 the majority, no. but I still see stock ones
Who wants to modify this tho ? I'd rather get the older WRX.
I think specifically the body kit aftermarket sector.
Crazy times we're living in when Toyota of all brands caters to car enthusiasts the most.
How? One is shared with Subaru and other is a BMW. I think Nissan is at top with Japanese performance.
eh i wouldnt say that. I still consider toyota kinda a joke. They have pretty much gotten just as complacent and slap a trd badge on a camry, put some ugly body kit on it and call it a day. The gr 86 is fine, but is all thanks to subaru, the supra is just a detuned z4. They absolutely have the money to work with yamaha and design a proper sports car lineup again. But they only care about pinching pennies and maximizing returns. They dont understand the concept of strong brand image. i would say honda/nissan/huyndai/bmw are the saving graces that still catre to the enthusiast crowd.
