    Note for those thinking of doing a budget build from scratch: Of you don't already have one, consider the price or upgrade cost, of 1440p monitors. They're not super expensive, but an ok one does cost a significant bit more than a 1080p one. Also consider monitors in terms of your FPS goals. If you're looking for 100+FPS but want it to last you a long time and don't _really_ mind closer to a 60 FPS "experience" at times, consider a 144Hz FreeSync panel with Low Framerate Compensation - really reasonable ones has come down a good bit in price since their popularity and sales volume went up, after Nvidia enabled "FreeSync" (Adaptive-Sync) to work on GeForce 10-series (and newer).
    But do consider your budget, your realistic targets and what you're potentially giving up elsewhere. It all has to make somewhat sense to *your* use and budget restraints.

      It would if it was bottlenecked, but this system was never bottlenecked by the CPU, idky he said that, the GPU was not running at max because it did not need to, the CPU was not struggling in the slightest. I can run dirt at ultra with an FX4300 and a GTX 1050ti with not much of a bottlenecking issue. Get on GTA V and my CPU is mostly maxed with 18-20% utilization of the GPU when set to get around 40 fps, that's bottlenecking, but because of my cooler my CPU does not go over 40c.

    • @michelfeinstein
      @michelfeinstein 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Every task that involves waiting, like compiling, (un)packing or rendering, profits from high core counts. Ryzen supports ECC RAM and some of the new X570 motherboards even made that support official. There are 32 GB DDR4-2666 DIMMs available for just around $100. Combine that with one of the new PCIe gen4 SSDs and you have one hell of a workstation.

    • @michelfeinstein
      @michelfeinstein 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@P8qzxnxfP85xZ2H3wDRV yeah, but my point is more "best cheap build for programmers", so we can see where to focus our money on, when we can't spend much.

    • @tarfeef_4268
      @tarfeef_4268 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I use CI/CD (the latter when applicable) for basically everything. Automated tests should be used as much as possible. Improves auditability, reduces time to deploy, and aren't prone to user error.
      Also you don't need ECC to compile android apps. Or a 5GBps drive. I'd suggest a ryzen 3000 cpu with as many cores as you can afford, since they have massive cache and typically compilation is cache heavy. Also cores are always useful, and will be especially so for you if emulating your test environments rather than connecting devices for it.
      After that, RAM is good. Enough to fit the uncompiled code, a few gigs buffer, and the VM for your test environment should basically remove IO bottlenecks. In a super high end desktop, sure use a fast nvme SSD. But for budget, you'll get more mileage out of a sata drive and getting more ram

    I changed from a Core I5 6600K over clocked to 4.5GHz to a n R5 2600 and I have no regrets.
    On the PSU I always get a PSU with a bit more wattage than I need. Its not good to push a PSU to its limits all the time. Not only that but over time a PSU slowly loses power output. Also if you get a PSU with 80+ certification like a 80+ Platinum when you use less than 80% of the wattage the PSU will be much much more efficient.
    When I buy my next PSU in a few weeks it will be a 700watt 80+ platinum even though I'll use less than that but it will give me headroom for upgrades , it will last a long time and it will be very efficient.

      @@dfkdiek518 thats bs. the 970 is more like a gtx 1060 or so. you can overclock it as far as you want, it wont reach even close peformance numbers as any gtx 1070.

    I want to see a "platform upgrade" build for people on older hardware, but who are taking over their GPU/Storage/Possibly Ram (depending on their generation)
    I'm still running an FX 8350 @ 4.2Ghz OC and I just upgraded to a GTX 1660ti, to realize the bottleneck from the CPU is unreal when playing at 1080p. Would be great to see 3 different platform upgrade builds, those for people with a 1060, a 2070 and a 2080ti.

    It's good to show that you CAN upgrade a "El Cheapo" system and over time get a VERY capable system for not very much money! and $250 should be very easy for most to get over a summer of mowing lawns or what not.

    HEY Jay, is the i9 9990XE technically the best gaming processor?

    • @imethan4625
      @imethan4625 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, the 9980xe is the strongest (except for Xeon), the 9990xe got 14 cores and 28 threads while the 9980xe got 18 cores and 32 threads

      The best gaming CPU is the i9 9900K and anyone saying otherwise is outright wrong. However other CPU:s are better for other things. Strictly for gaming the i9 9900k wins.

    I really enjoyed the way you explained the upgrade choice and then said how much it cost and how much you could sell the old parts for for a new sub total

    It would be interesting to see alternate builds (Intel / AMD each with Nvidia / Radeon) approached from a game performance perspective rather than budget. The NZXT bld site allows buyers to pick games and a desired performance level in FPS, take that approach with a range of self built PCs. Revealing the costs at the end of the video might add some suspense, maybe it's more than one video.

    If you don't have a cooler that provides airflow to the VRM and RAM just add one 120/140mm fan to the top of the case. VRM get a lot hotter than you may think. So providing sufficient airflow is important like Jay said.
