Very happy to see mention of MAN. They are a great live band and it is definitely worth checking out Maximum Darkness, Live At The Padget Rooms & Live At Reading. Great Video. All the best Robert from North Wales.

Definatley Strawberry Alarm Clock and 13th Floor Elevators. Yes they both did 4 albums but the could also have a few bonus features on them.
Leadbelly (the first man of rock n roll/The Blues)
Mamas and Papas need a boxset including their live at monterey pop festival compilation.
Iron Butterfly I know already is a boxset but could be re-released with the 2 albums they did in the 70s.
    Iggy Pop
    Steppenwolf.
Buddy Holly needs a boxset album series.
John Lee Hooker, Blues Brothers, Three Dog Night, Paul Williams, David Soul, The Fallen Angels (60s band)

The Mamas and the Papas had a great "collected works" set out many years ago which included, as a bonus, their previously-unreleased version of "Nowhere Man." Buddy Holly also had some career-spanning boxed sets. These have all been out of print for a while now, but you could hunt for them in all the usual places.

Siouxsie & the Banshees had a great 3 cd + dvd BBC sessions set a decade or so ago, which I have, but they could really stand an official career-spanning set incl all the b-sides, "12' mixes, demo's, essential album tracks and some Creatures stuff. Joe Jackson's had a pretty diverse and underappreciated career/ output since the late 70's that I believe would merit a similarly expansive mult-disc retrospective.

    Hmm…great topic Larry.
I never really thought about it.
    But you’re absolutely right.
A lot of these bands I have
    their discographies and don’t
need a box set. But certainly
for those that want a comprehensive
overview of an artist’s career then
a nice box set is perfect.
    🤘😳🤘

  • @alanlinfield8207
    @alanlinfield8207 ปีที่แล้ว +1

This is a terrific topic, Larry! Thanks for posting this video. Love the Fireman and Sparks boxed set ideas!
You seem to be mainly interested in boxed sets which collect all of an artist's recorded output along with the possible addition of some previously-unreleased material. That can be affordable if you're talking about four, five, or six discs - like the sets for the Zombies, Spirit, the Police, Dire Straits, and Steely Dan. Or it can be semi-affordable for artists with large catalogs who issue separate box sets for each era e.g., Bowie. But the collected works of some of the artists you're recommending here - ouch! In the early days of the CD market, several artists had career retrospective boxed sets which featured not everything they ever recorded but a good four or five hour overview of their catalog with some bonus tracks and a book or two. I bought quite a few of those. Don't see too many of them nowadays. They have been replaced, by and large, by the super deluxe edition reissues of a single album (or a pair of albums in the case of the Beach Boys and the Kinks - both of whom also have great career-spanning box sets).
Who should get a boxed set? Bob Seger, Santana (the 3-disc set was very nice but the band deserves a bigger boxed set), Queen, Van Morrison, Genesis, Kansas, Styx, the Scorpions, Frank Zappa, Jackson Browne, AC/DC, the Alan Parson’s Project, Toto, Supertramp, Squeeze, George Harrison (especially if we’re never getting Early Takes volume 2), Grateful Dead, Peter Frampton, John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, Renaissance, and Rush.
There are some wonderful two-disc collections for both the Rascals and Three Dog Night. I understand you're looking for something much more comprehensive but these sets contain everything I need from each band. Similarly, I'm happy with my two-disc comps for Boz Scaggs, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Sweet, Van Halen, Bad Company (Paul Rodgers era only), Procol Harum, Uriah Heep, Steppenwolf, Jethro Tull, the Carpenters, Humble Pie, and Robert Palmer -- with apologies to any uber-fans of any of these artists.

In 1990 there were a couple of great XTC CD compilations:
    XTC Rag & Bone Buffet
    XTC Explode Together
    They included:
Mr. Partridge - Take Away / The Lure Of Salvage
    XTC - Go+
The Three Wise Men - Thanks For Christmas
The Colonel - Too Many Cooks In The Kitchen
    and various outtakes and singles.

There was a box set released of The Rascals Atlantic recordings some time ago, now out of print. Maybe you were looking for something more comprehensive, though.
I'm always impressed by your wide range of knowledge of the many rock artists over the years. I also like that you try to give thoughtful and fair critique of the various albums.

*Nazareth used to regularly tour North America with Rush in the 70's, and if I ever had access to a TARDIS, those would be shows I'd definitely want to catch. Scotland produced some superb bands that were prominent in the 70's, Nazareth, Sensational Alex Harvey Band, The Skids, Average White Band, and even the Bay City Rollers came up with some decent toons.

Id love a Sparks box set too I'd imagine given the price of sets which cover maybe 5 to 10 albums though one covering 27+ with all the bonus songs too would cost a LOT. I would love it though haha. I guess it would be difficult as well with all of the different labels involved like you say. The recent CD reissues of balls through to exotic creatures were cool but a nice set would be way preferable to the thin cardboard sleeves of those releases wouldnt it. It's always nice when a lot of care goes into packaging ..though of course the music is the most important.
I know the debut and woofer were reissued and possibly remastered on vinyl last year and apparently the speed issue on woofer was fixed so maybe a start would be a set with those two albums and the demos album that came before sparks that's avaliable on youtube in one set for the early years, i think that could make a cool release :)

Good call with Nazareth and Man. Saw Man in the mid-90's in Edinburgh, with maybe an audience of 20, and they were excellent, didn't take themselves seriously. My box set wishlist would be Alter Bridge, Boston, Collective Soul, Goodbye Mr MacKenzie, Gun, Killing Koke, Bob Mould (solo and Husker Du & Sugar), Orchestral Manoeuvers In The Dark, Stiff Little Fingers and Ultravox (The Midge Ure years).

@@canadianstudmuffin AND also agree with your assessment of Three Dog Night. A criminally underrated band today. My theory is that they represent a kind of group that has gone the way of the dodo. No songwriters per se but like a jazz singer, they select gems and interpret them in their own unique way.

  • @AnthonyKiyola

A box set that I am after is the Radio Birdman (Aust) one but it’s hard to come by. I am looking forward to Black Sabbath - the Tony Martin Years which is supposed to be out this year, although it was originally supposed to be out last year. Some bands that I would like to have box sets of their official studio and live albums are Dragon (NZ), Skyhooks (Aust - although I have most of their albums), Rose Tattoo (Aust), The Angels (Aust) and AC/DC’s early Australian albums, although I have the songs already but it would be nice to have the albums in a set. I have Dirty Deeds on cd but my biggest regret was getting rid of my lp of Let There Be Rock, cassette of Dirty Deeds and not buying proper copies of High Voltage and TNT. I know Powerage has some different mixes, although I don’t if the Australian version mixes differ and Highway to Hell which had a different cover, although it was recorded in London.

    1. Prince (This would definitely have to be a series of box sets for vinyl)
    2. Squeeze
    3. The Kinks later albums
    4. Deep Purple (like a more complete one, they’ve had boxes in the past, but incomplete ones.)
    5. Green Day
    6. Pearl Jam
    7. AC/DC
    8. The Cure
    9. Elvis Costello (I know this one would have to be a series of box sets as well)
    10. Paul McCartney 90s and 2000s albums
Btw these are all for vinyl

We have been working on getting ALL the Good Rats albums and some live recordings as one big CD box seat. Our biggest problem is Universal Music Group which has the Kapp Records catalog and that label released the Good Rats' debut in 1969. We want to make some money, as it was in Peppi Marchello's Last Will in 2012 when he sadly passed away at 68. The Good Rats' well-known album, Tasty turns 50 in May of 2024. Our working title for the box set is" GOOD RATS "The World's Most Famous Unknown Band"
As for Sparks, that would be a tough one.

Couldn’t agree more on the Nazareth set. Most of their 70’s albums you can’t even get from Amazon or they’re ridiculously priced. Others I would like
    1. Angel
    2. Thin Lizzy
    3. Sweet
    4. B.T.O.
    5. Foghat (Amazon has one ridiculously priced)
    6. Frank Marino/Mahogany Rush (70’s/80’s)
    7. Gary Moore (70’s/80’s)
    8. Michael Schenker/MSG
    9. Molly Hatchet (78-84)
    10. Robin Trower (70’s/80’s)
    11. Scorpions (70’s Uli era)

Hello there! I think Queen definitely deserve a 'Career Spanning' box set; something like that has been don for Jethro Tull's 50th Anniversary: in 2018, in fact, Tull released a really cool Greatest Hits called '50 For 50', which feautere a lot of cool stuff. Secondly, I think another band that definitely deserves the box set treatment, is 'Gotan Project': Oh my God, such a criminally underrated band! A huge hug to my absolutely beloved Canada! I'd love to come back out there, one day

  • @zachwalentiny

One band that really needs a discography remastering and box set is Styx. Really the only way to buy their CD's is to buy the original A&M CD pressings from the 80's that don't sound that great. They do have one of those small 5 CD box sets available but as far as I can tell, the CD's in that set aren't even remastered. On the other hand, the band who set the standard for box sets has to be Jethro Tull when they released a huge box set for each of their albums with loads of bonus meterial.

Yes, the Jethro Tull box sets are so well done! I have Thick As A Brick.

@@canadianstudmuffin I bought the most recent Tull box set that came out for the "Broadsword and the Beast" album and it is excellent. Not my favorite Tull album but it is worth it just to have the 160 page book and the 7 CD's worth of bonus material that comes with it.

Right Equinox-Paradise Theatre would be great. Ridiculous they never even been remastered at all. Ok put in Kilroy if we have to

Steppenwolf, the dunhill years are badly transferred compared to the Japan releases which are pretty darn good

Aerosmith. maybe 3 seperate boxes for different eras of the band. The 1st from the 70's the debut to night in the ruts right before Joe perry left. 2nd one, 80's & 90's, rock in a hard place 1982 to nine lives 1997. and the 3rd 2000's & after.

How about a Sensational Alex Harvey Band box.

They had a really nice box set released a few years back of all of their albums, including Alex Harvey's solo years.

    That was interesting.
I would like a boxset of Talk Talk a band that created Art Rock virtually on their own.
An interesting box set compilation would be the works of the brilliant Rory Gallagher who was an underrated hero of the 70s & 80s
Great performance and thoroughly enjoyable. All the best. Dave✅✅

Personally I think if you have a band or artist's whole discography in your collection then box sets are a complete waste of money.

    • @canadianstudmuffin
      @canadianstudmuffin  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks for your opinion, but if all of the albums are remastered well (and certain things fixed) I'll buy the box set.

    • @wee-weeble49
      @wee-weeble49 ปีที่แล้ว

I hadn't thought about things needing fixed, if I'm honest. The chances of me ever buying any box sets are slim anyway, I'd never be able to afford them, not on disability benefits.@@canadianstudmuffin
