Alex was too tough inside to play Sookie.. she's a tough, dark humour kinda broad! Melissa McCarthy gave a softness and kindness to Sookie. Amazing how personalities shine through in acting. Or the difference one person gives to a role over another. Both amazing ladies.
So true. I haven’t watched the full unaired pilot but one of Alex’s best one liners as Drella in the first season in my opinion is the following: (when Lorelai asked Drella to lower the volume of her harp playing) “Do I look like I got Panasonic stamped on my ass?”
Interestinglly, Alex breaks eye contact and almost looks ashamed but Melissa keeps it. Also, Melissa just plays it as Child-like energy. Both are great takes but I am so glad it went to Melissa. Melissa's Sookie looking Lorelei in the eye tells you that they are equals, they are friends. That's what makes this show great - two adult female friends, female friends at all levels. I love this show.
I just remembered Alex's character from Mad TV, you look like a man. Kills it each time. She performed it for the troops in the 90s - just killed it btw. And the person sharing that story was like, I had to do a set, come up with stuff but they LOVED ALex.
@@maliamohr Luke does it also later in the series in the ep where he takes over the Dragonfly kitchen while Sookie is on bed rest. Yet we never hear him speak in Spanish to Cesar it's the weirdest thing.
Yeah and Kirk is some random dude named Mick 😂 I think they just had to establish some canon. There are a TON of inconsistencies even within episodes but I still love the show ❤

I recently read an interesting thing.. About Melissa McCarthy. I don't think any fan of the series can imagine anyone else playing Sookie. But we could not only not see her in this role, but generally not have such an actress as Melissa McCarthy. The thing is that she made her way into the cinema for a very long time. For about 10 years, she probably was in inconspicuous secondary roles. And then she said that if she didn’t get anything significant before the age of 30 (in terms of roles), she would give up her film career. A week before her 30th birthday, Melissa landed the role of Sookie St. James. As for me, it was this role that opened her to the viewer. And what else can you call it if not fate? She's beautiful as Sookie and generally wonderful in all roles. How glad I am that then everything turned out for her just like that and we have Melissa))
Alex added a different flavour to their relationship; I’m going to have fun imagining what GG would have turned out like with such a different influence on the rest of the Stars Hollow universe. Thanks for sharing.
Melissa added a whimsical element to Sookie that was needed. Her Sookie was a nice contrast to the more sarcastic Lorelei. I could buy Melissa's Sookie being so one track minded about her cooking that she'd injure herself..and would be too excited about her creation to notice she was injured lol Alex B and Lauren G were almost too similar to mesh well..imho
A lot of comments seem to presume Alex Borstein was recast because she wasnt suitable but I Amy reakly wanted her for the show but MADTV wouldn't let her appear in another show, even with Amy planning to film her scenes in a day that didn't clash with MADtv. It's why the character Jackson is called Jackson and played by Alex's real life husband Jackson Douglas and also Alex did show up in Gilmore Girls as the harpist Drella and then as Miss Celine. I do prefer Melissa McCarthy's Sookie but I dont think Borstein's was bad, just a different interpretation of the character.
I love Gilmore Girls it is a amazing show I have seen every season of the original show and the spin-off series Gilmore Girls is amazing the spin-off series is decent but not as good as the original.
There was another pilot? The one they went with is already being shot in completely different locations so they made them make two before actually letting them build sets? :D
I think so :) Sometimes pilots don't get picked up so it's just too risky to start thinking about everything you need to do for episode two before the pilot is green-lit.
I love Alex as an actress, but her version of Suki was so dialed down...and blah. I am glad the Melissa became Suki, because she added so much more excitement to the character❤ I also noticed how they changed Lorelei some as well.
Alex played the role of Sookie more like she was flirting with Lorelei. The acting and chemistry from Lauren’s side alone, was vastly improved with Melissa as Sookie.

Melissa brings warmth to the role. This whole show is like a warm blanket. Can’t have a cold personality in a big role in a show that’s comforting.
