Hell yeah. This would have been a great spin off with the ending being the tumultuous relationship with Lorelai as a teenager. It would have been a great way to give us a young Richard and Emily as they work through high society life with their own sarcasm viewpoint especially Emily and Richard's mother.
I agree! We don't know much about Emily, but the spinoff would explain some of the reason she ended up the way that she did. Maybe, she also got pregnant with Lorelai at an early age and she was the person who settled down with Richard instead of being independent. Also, it would be amazing to know more about Pennilyn Lott.
When watching this episode as a preteen, I was always confused by this episode. Nine times out of ten, if an episode focuses on characters we've never seen before or since, chances are it's an attempt for a potential spinoff.
Omg I literally forgot about the spin off with Jess! This really could have worked for him but I feel like a spin off with Rory as a parent could probably work today. She could struggle raising her kid and see how different parenting is today with a kid raised with so much technology
well at the end of I am all in rory is pregnant with her first kid in 2016. the kid would only be 9, so they'd be in the real gen alpha stage and going through all that shit. That be definitely something for lorelai to figure out. (also emily as the great grandma would be perfection)
I still wish that Jess and Rory had ended up together, since they had the best chemistry. Milo could have handled his own show, as he later did on Heroes and This is Us.
I think that they do end up together. In the final episode of Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life Palladino clearly draws analogies between the relationship of Jess and Rory and that of Lorelei and Luke. I think that Jess will eventually end up with Rory, just like Lorelei finally ended up with Luke. But Rory will first experience what it is like to be a single mother, raising her child in the small town of Stars Hollow, with the support of all the town folk, just like her mother did. Her experiences mirror Lorelei's, and that isn't a bad thing. That was the message of the series. They are both strong independent women, but they have a whole tribe of town folk to support them. A found family. I'd love to see this as a series.
The revival made it look like they eventually do end up together. It’s like Rory gets a child from Logan, who is like Richard. And then Jess is the Luke for Rory.
Maybe unpopular opinion but by the time I watched this episode I was so invested in Jess as a character and his family relationships that I was more excited abt his own spin off show than Gilmore girls. I loved the introduction to every character that would supposedly be part of the show, specially the little “weird” girl who loved being alone and reading books, I thought her and Jess would be so good to each other. And all the new parent characters would be good for Jess to develop more. It sucks we never got that show.
Soooo, we're going to ignore that just before Jess left, at the party, he tried to have sex with Rory, and he kept trying when she told him to stop, requiring her to be more forceful to stop him from having sex with her without her consent, then the jerk got mad at her. That was the most rape culture moment of the entire show, and the perpetrator was suppose to have a spin off. Seriously? For all the talk of how swoony Jess was, a large part of the audience, including me, hated Jess. He totally disrespected the fact that Rory was already in a committed relationship when they met, then after he had successfully destroyed that relationship and got her, he treated her like crap, often refusing to do things she wanted to do, and even having the gall to say that it was because he had her now and didn't have to put in that effort. It would be seasons later before Jess even became a watchable character. Ironically, I would've much preferred Rory with older Jess than trust fund baby, man-child, Logan. I agree with the commenter who said Richard and Emily in their college and early years would've been a better spin off.
Ohhh the spinoff makes so much sense. I was wondering what happened to Jess because after he went to California, he disappeared for a long time. So much so, that I had kind of forgotten about his role until "A year in the Life." Dealing with the Spinoff drama would have meant possible negotiations etc. I hope we can one day get a spinoff to see the backstory of some of the characters particularly Emily and Richard and maybe Ms Patti and Babbette because thier love for show business seems so interestign!
well Lauren Graham's career wasn't exactly *launched* by Gilmore Girls. She had been on shows like Townies and Conrad Bloom along with many reoccuring roles and guest apperances in television. It was her 1st shared lead role that lasted.
@@atomicabeshe was a regular on Parenthood and was a lead on Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist. She’s also done a lot of theater. She has not been out of work.
I don't think Rory failed she had a set back and that happens to everyone in life. Struggling and being lost when you are in your early 30's is normal. Life can't always be perfect.
She was also Amy's choice for Lorelai so instead of Lauren and Melissa, we could have ended up with Fenn and Alex. Very thankful it didn't end up that way!!!
The real reason the spinoff didn't work is because the Jesse character is utterly vile and unsympathetic! Massive ego, ignorant narcissist! Luke was right when he pushed him into the lake!
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think if they had a spin off Rory and her Kid as an adult that would likely work better. But I also think Gilmore Girls just worked better in the time where internet and cellphones where just getting big , and we didn't have smartphones all those things cheapened A Year in the life sure we got a few answers but I think just having it left how it is would be okay. Not sure a Jess spin off would work as If Jess still was in Loved with Rory it would just be confusing which show was which.
This character hides in cupboard's to read and this character is a tweenage fan of 70's punk bands and ALL the characters know who directed the cult classic, "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes"... no, it's simple. most ppl wanted to see rory with jess, and they didn't. ppl didn't like dean and logan as much. jess and rory gained the most amount of popularity on the show. ppl wanted to see them together in the spin off, but they didn't. i was also disappointed.
I missed this episode when it originally aired....and over the years I used to do regular rewatches of the whole series...still always skip this episode still have never seen it.
You would, presumably, be introduced to other characters you’d love And it’s not like this would go on alone. The GG would’ve kept going and this would just be a spin-off, so being “glad it failed” doesn’t make sense
I always skip every scene from the spinoff episode with jeds. I cant stand this episode and I really reaaaally dont like the mother of april & didn't liked her already in the spinoff episode.
The spin off should be Richard and Emily in their college and early years

The dude has so much on screen chemistry, not only with anyone he’s acting with in the scene but also the camera.
Meh but Luke & Lorelei
Lorelei is Rory’s mom & Luke is Jess’ uncle so that’s a bit weird

That makes sense. I knew that the episode that followed Jess to California was meant to be expanded on.
Wonder if the little girls that wanted to be Rory had as mixed feelings as I did about her being a complete failure of a person in the revival 😅
I don't think Rory failed she had a set back and that happens to everyone in life. Struggling and being lost when you are in your early 30's is normal. Life can't always be perfect.

So we didn't get the spinoff because ASP didn't get everything her way.
