    I worked at the post office hauling the mail. I've seen packages tossed ten feet or more into bins. I'm very interested in trying one of Danny's dyi designs. Congratulations on your great looking and sounding purchase.

    Great points on subs. I've been interested to hear someone's take on these speakers with a box sub. This supports something I've suspected. You points on modular cabinets for these speakers is something I've wondered about as well. My cabinet concerns are the main reason I haven't bought a pair of these just yet. I'm a pretty good wood worker and there are mods I've considered but I debate with myself because the value of the DIY nature here runs the risk of being diminished. I have a tendency to take things too far.

    Just a note on the way the driver is shipped, they've switched to using a box with custom formed foam. When I built a pair of their Encores a few years ago the drivers came with the spacers you described, but recently I built their NX-Otica and the drivers were shipped in individual boxes, encased in foam.

    I’m a fan of Danny’s I will never build these, but I imagine they are glorious. I did his LRS plus upgrade and it transformed that speaker. I use a sealed subwoofer and to me the value is off the charts.

    Been waiting for this one! In all the GR speakers I’ve owned with these drivers, none have ever failed on me. I totally understand how someone would feel they lack in quality, it’s mostly the plastic frame which is purposely made that way to avoid resonances/ringing.
    As for amplifiers, I highly recommend a Purifi based amplifier but they impart zero warmth or color to a sound. Class D is great because not only is it now technically superior, but the energy savings make me want to use a system more. It doesn’t cost a lot more to use a Class A or A/B, but it’s a mental thing lol
    I have an open baffle subwoofer and love it, but it can’t be placed as conveniently as a sealed box, so I would probably just go sealed next time for that reason. Seaton or Rhythmik all day for me.
    Hope you keep these longterm… it’s hard to do it, but the quality level is hard to beat.

    • @AudiophileJunkie
      @AudiophileJunkie  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I'll definitely be keeping them a long time. I had to assemble them in the room because it would be almost impossible for me to bring up the stairs solo. I probably could get them down the stairs ok, but these should be my endgame speakers.

      Not sure if you realize that the actual designer of the speaker has a TH-cam channel for those details. Look up "GR Research"
      Anechoic data and what parts are used can be found on the website for the speaker, so I'm not sure what you are specifically looking for.

    Thanks! Really interesting series with tons of info. Your approach of using the NXtremes as a near field speaker is unique. You mention the smaller room, and I am wondering what the size of your room? And if/how it is treated? I have a pretty small space 11'x20', kind of odd shape and was wondering if the NXoticas would work in a similar fashion.

    • @AudiophileJunkie
      @AudiophileJunkie  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks... The answer is both "yes" and "no". In terms of performance, it can rival the cost no object speakers with proper subs, DSP and room treatments. In fact, it will beat many of them... the ceiling of performance possible in many areas is better.
      However, the quality of the cabinet and drivers isn't among the best in the industry. It's a great compromise of trade-offs though... Especially for a DIY kit.. You really can't ask for much more.

    Hi
    Can you comment on the sweet spot characteristics. Many years ago I tested Martin Logan Summit at my home for two weeks. The sweet spot was very narrow and you could not move your head much. Is this type of open baffle speaker similar to electrostats in that respect?

    • @AudiophileJunkie
      @AudiophileJunkie  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This speaker is pretty good off axis. If you watch my video on measurements, those results are actually a combination of 9 measurements near the sweet spot, but at least a couple feet deviation. The numbers are even better at the sweet spot, but you can see that there is very little decline off axis within reason. Danny has results on the website he took.
      I've had electrostatic and it won't be near the same issue. With those. As soon a your head is higher than the panel, the sound is terrible. Horizontally, you should be much better off too.

      Thanks for the answer.
      So three people sitting side by side can enjoy music/film, even it is of course optimal in the middle.
      How did you detect the failed driver? Did you hear it directly, or by measurements, or by listening to each driver by itself?

  • @MichaelAmster
    @MichaelAmster 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Did you choose to use the miniDSP to do the crossover from the NX-Extremes to the REL? What slope and frequency did you use for your system? BTW, I am using a miniDSP 2X4HD with dual closed box Rythmik F-15HD and using ARC with an AVM-60 for my correction above the subs.

    • @AudiophileJunkie
      @AudiophileJunkie  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes.. I'll have a video on it soon where I walk through the crossover to the subs. It's fairly complex and will depend on the specific subs and main speakers. Thus, I'm not sure the exact values will translate to everyone, but the process and theory I use may be helpful.
      In short, I like to roll them over lower than most people and use steep curves to prevent the subs and main speakers overlapping much into higher frequencies.
      I also create a bandpass on the sub to prevent it from doing stuff really low. I'll have more details soon in the video.

    Chipamps can be good and neutral. You just need to go composite. A composite chip amp is the most cost-effective way of getting hifi sound IMO. Simple TDA or LM circuit can get you even -115dB THD+N. There aren't many circuits, but I saw one guy assemble a quick and dirt cheap amp on a prototype board and it was something like -105dB of THD. It wasn't a lot of power, but definitely good enough to power individual drivers in an active floorstander.

    Just bought the NX Oticas and found your videos very helpful in seeing how you put them together - which I'm about to start. Thanks for making the videos.
    However, I'm really surprised you like the Mini-DSP. I think Dirac is great, but I returned the Mini-DSP and paid the restocking fee. Their preamp section sounded MUCH worse than my Schiit Freya, even when I bypassed the Mini-DSP's mediocre DAC and went into my Yggy. Somebody like Innuos or Lumin needs to integrate Dirac into some really good equipment.
    After I got off my behind and spent more time (about 4 hours) fine tuning the positioning of my current speakers - Tekton 2-10 Perfect SET - I didn't miss the Dirac anymore.
    Danny says it will be no contest between the NX Oticas and the Tektons. I've owned speakers that cost 5 times more than the Tektons and I like the Tektons better. It will be great to compare.

    • @AudiophileJunkie
      @AudiophileJunkie  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm not a Tekton fan at all so we might have different tastes.
      To be honest...I think the minidsp was showing you the weakness in Tektons and not vice versa.
      From an engineering perspective, the SHD has impeccable measurements in both DAC and preamp qualities. It should be revealing and accurate assuming you didn't have a defective one.
      Once you get the oticas built, it will be interesting to see if your tastes have changed, or you still prefer Tektons. Best of luck with the build!

  • @MrDTF

    Hi
    Since you employ lot of DSP already, have you considered to go fully active using digital filters, i.e., elliminate the passive crossover?
    Dag

    • @AudiophileJunkie
      @AudiophileJunkie  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes...it's something I considered since that's how my Wisdom Adrenalines are designed (except they use an analog active crossover).
      However, I wanted to see how the NXtremes performed in my room with no EQ and just passive crossover as intended.
      The hybrid approach seems to work well, but it would be fun to go full active as a comparison...it would take a ton of stuff out the signal path and allow the amp power to go straight to the driver. Theoretically, I would need 6 channels of amplification to do it like my Wisdom Adrenaline speakers, so it's probably something to add to my "fantasy cost-no-object thoughts".

  • @joesharkey1021

    If you're removing drivers a lot into an MDF box, try squirting resin wood glue into the hole. RESIN W is the brand leader here, but I'm sure Home Depot have similar. Not sure how having a gasket would help "soft" mdf...

    • @AudiophileJunkie
      @AudiophileJunkie  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think a metal gasket would provide the threads for inserting and removing drivers. Thus it wouldn't impact the MDF if you change out a lot.

    • @AudiophileJunkie
      @AudiophileJunkie  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I roll over to the subs very low. Some songs don't even wake-up the sub from standby mode, so a sub isn't technically "required". However, with certain music, it adds an invaluable quality, so it really depends on what standards you're looking to achieve.
      Transparency is exceptional. You will likely hear things you've never heard before. Soundstage is great too. Instruments are riveted in place much better than most speakers.

      No speaker that costs more than a car is going to be a "better deal" in terms of sound quality. However, the reality is that cost is not a factor for many people.
      Even if it's just 1% better sounding... Better looking... etc...they will pay the price.
      I can have a purse made of the rarest softest leather and few people will take it over a Louis Vuitton.

      Agreed emphatically.
      The single component that every component depends on the most is the room.
      The room's transfer function layed atop the playback can't be overstated.
      Sadly, it's the week-point in essentially every rig I see online. There's exceptions, but seemingly all audio enthusiasts prefer component upgrades rather than performing the work and sorting out the room... ie., $5k-$20k DAC shootouts and subsequent replacements in rooms that aren't sorted.
      I get it, spending money on gear is easier ... gear is sexier ... I'm a gear head too! But incremental playback differences in gear absolutely pale in comparison to massive gains gleaned addressing acoustic distortions.
      Dig the channel. I believe I discovered you while searching for NXtreme info, as I'd been contemplating Danny's kits. I’ve got no room for more, but I'm always exploring, experiencing, moving forward. If anything, I'd implement them into my mix/editing rig, my primary system is currently well sorted.
      All the best

      You don't understand how bass propagates in a room. In fact, a better argument can be made that full range speakers are compromised since they fix where bass is launched and it's rarely the most optimal area compared to where the midrange and tweeter should be. Watch my videos with JR of Wally tools and others to get more educated on the subject. Don't fall for these primitive dogmas people spout online.
      Frankly, if you can't hear it, you can prove it to yourself by taking measurements.

      @@AudiophileJunkie If you have a good subwoofer than yeah it's worth it. I'm just talking about people that just overdrive the bass so it covers all the other frequencies. I have a umik and REW I know how to take measurements but myself for 2 channel audio I just prefer my main speakers. If I had a better subwoofer that could keep up I would think differently. I bought a 12 " Dayton Reference subwoofer and I am building a cabinet for it . I just don't know what rack amp I want. It has 2 voice coils and it should be faster what I have now . I just like the tone of my woofers on my speakers and I don't want something that is going to change that sound and they get low enough for music that I listen to so I don't like to use my current sub but if I had a better one I would probably use it. That's why I'm building my own because I can't afford the one I want

      @@AudiophileJunkiei understand that I have 10" woofers with huge magnetics with a fs of 22hz in a 1.5 "cabinet tuned to 28 hz in a 12" 16" room . I don't personally need a subwoofer

      You may not need a sub, but others do. In fact, I'm going to a friend's house this weekend where we will install a swarm of 4 subs. It's not for more volume of bass.. It's for balancing out the room modes to get a smoother response.

      @AudiophileJunkie I do like a sub but I need a better one that can keep up with my main speakers that's the problem I feel it's lagging behind a little
