Ok, first of all...what a pleasure it was to watch both you and Scott's videos. You both are such talented storytellers. What an even bigger surprise when I saw the best portrait of me ever done on screen. I appreciate the shout out so much. And I am so happy you chose not to print this. I'm a firm believer that printing is not always the solution, just another tool. Probably 25% of what I show in screen is never printed, including terrain bases like this, and IMO is a much better complement than printed alternatives. Please do this again.
I obviously shouted you out to avoid 3D printing questions :P I think 3D printing is great for the community because you can use it in so many different ways and at the end of the day, it puts terrain on the table. Keep up the good work!
Oh man, this is wonderful. I love that you let yourself be seen as fallible, showing all the stopping and starting, and throwing away of old designs because you suddenly dislike the direction they're going. So many craft channels would have you think they actually have a concrete plan from the beginning ;)
Agreed. Any creator that's willing to show they screw up just like anyone else, helps the viewer feel like they can actually "do it". Intimidation is always a major factor when watching a pro make it look easy.
That means a lot, that's been a really big focus lately and that's really because of Scott. We're both wanting to make a more honest videos, because mistakes and thought processes and problem solving is a such a big part of the hobby. I was really testing the waters with this video so thanks for giving me the confidence to do more!
Very nice down to earth video. Another thing about showing the parts that are not included in the final scenario is that it gives the viewers insight into the idea process. Most of my best ideas with dioramas (and jewellery) have come from lucky mistakes (Finding uses for discarded ideas and "mistakes" would fit very well with your channel name). I believe that trying to steer the process too much, you disrupt the creative flow. And the feeling of creative flow is what I first and foremost want to experience in this hobby. Hope to see more videos (One where you explore more techniques to get the pentagram circle effect would be awesome). And btw, I think you have a win-win situation.
Thanks for the kind words and feedback. I think the most progression you can make doing anything creative is just from experimenting. For my previous tutorials I made 1 or 2 versions off camera before making the final piece, so I did all the problem solving off camera. With the dead tree tutorial I tried lots of the most popular techniques before settling on the one that worked for me, looking back now I wished I'd included all that stuff because that was really valuable information. I'm trying to gear my channel to projects like this, exploring things I don't really know and that challenge me, because that's what I find the most fun. The name Miscast Terrain is a bit self deprecating and it started with the idea that my terrain was a bit rubbish and I wanted to gear my tutorials toward the every-man. I'm really proud of the terrain I make now and I regretted the name for a bit. The name also comes from the Miscast Table from Warhammer Fantasy which is my all time favourite system and at the time and I was really uncool for playing it because everyone else played 40k. But I loved how chaotic magic was an how fun and unpredictable it was. I think with that and your idea about embracing the mistakes I really do like the name after all. Maybe once I'm working with bigger budgets I'll be able to do some actual moulding and casting for the channel, its in the pipeline! The next video coming up explores more techniques for the pentagram, I nearly included it at the end of this video, but it didn't seem fitting, so stay turned!
Its really relieving to see someone else struggle with being indecisive about the vision of a project. I feel insane sometimes when Im constantly obsessing on the outcome of a project, changing the techniques and methods of the build all the while. It feels good to know that Im not alone.
You should add a bit of hot glue to the skewer holding up the island and paint it with oranges and yellows to make it look like lava flowing down to mask it
Miscast Terrain or you can make a sort of fake lateral chains so you have the impression that they hold in place the floating island. Great video, you got a subscriber!
@Nicola Peroni, yeah I actually wanted to do that! but I ran out of time to source fine chains. Next time! I'll be coming back to these floating islands again and making a boards worth so I'll try it out then
I think you won based on how open you were about the process and how you demonstrated that it wasn't really about winning. But I do think scotts depiction looked more finished and what I imagine he'll would look like. Good Job as always :)
Terrain suggestion/question I'm planning on buying hard plastic severed Halloween fingers to make a chaos forest out of but I can't think how to securely fix them upright. Any suggestions? I thought about a bolt into the base but they would scratch my table surface
That mental image is terrifying. So cool. There are a few ways I'd do it, one would be to fill the bottom the fingers with foam (xps, eps, expandable foam, something along those lines) and then glue the foam to the base. Another way would be to use a 2 part modelling/plumbers putty and secure them on the board by building up putty around the edges. The third would be to cover the whole base in a thing called builders filler (sometimes called builders bog), it's a 2 part filler that you can spread onto the base and then push the fingers into it. Once the filler is dry it is like plastic. You've gotta send me pictures when it's done miscastterrain@gmail.com, the idea sounds so awesome
@@Miscast ooh those ideas sound great. Yes I could fill each finger affects then sculpt some buttress like mangroves or something. Hoping to get some more supplies maybe in a month or two so I'll email you later. Cheers for the advice
Doesn’t mather, each builder will bring their own vision and skill. I’d love to see a mixture in channel sizes though ! The 😉 emoticon kinda implied my wish to participate 😳
@Miscast Terrain Thanks ! And yes in 2019 i will be uploading more, starting this week with part 2 for the crashed spaceship scenery. The goal is to bring A LOTT of content, grow the channel and play along with the big boys and girls. However ....... for now, there isn’t enough time for such shenanigans 😔. I will be uploading tutorial vids in 2019 though and if all goes according to plan expect crazy things in 2020 !
I know I am pretty late on this video, as I am new to your channel.. & both of you did great jobs; BUT I definitely have to say imo you won, hands down- not only do I love your concept, I feel like the theme is much more obvious with your miniature! Amazing work!!
I am inpressed with both the quality of the video and on the terrain piece. Sadly your thumbnail does not do it justice in any way. Should you make more floating terrain, may I suggest using three clear acrylic rods ( or clear plastic pens work). By having three your terrain will b steady and not move or wobble. Also that how to make terrain book is a classic and held in my reference library.
If I remember right, I was racing to get this uploaded with scott, and this was default thumbnail from youtube. Good suggestion, I might change it. I think that's how I'd make the piece now with acrylic rods, I wanted to do a lot more but I run out of time!
@@Miscast Time is always the enemy- the thumbnail led m to expect a simple carved design on a thin piece of foam, not the floating piece of hell that you created.

You did an awesome job, and I love the way you spoke out to Scott in respect! That's great! I hope you get to use it for some games. Jungle terrain is a good idea too, I used fake plants for my Jungle terrain table I did a few years ago.
TomsTradeTable I like the stuff you're building on your channel and I feel like I've seen it before, maybe on The Table Top Crafters Guild? It'd be great to have more Deathmatchs and also involve the community more to if possible (This one between me and Scott was more of a friendly rivalry we have). I'll look at organising something in the future, until then I look forward to seeing how your channel progresses and seeing the terrain you make! :)
Thanks! Been trying to make ruins and firepits recently for my players to mess with or rebuild over time, and I found this extremely interesting (the tracing into foam bit). Any chance there is another way to contact you about the challenge? Ps. Yes the guild XD

Dude that turned out really well!!! My brother plays chaos so I will have to make something like that now! Great video.
YEEES! this is great! the added dimension in this crafting video is quite cool.
Maybe some flames on the base to hide the stick holding up the satan rock?

I came after seeing Miniac’s video to check you out. Three minutes in and I’m subbed. This was amazing.

Can you do some orktober terrain?

To choose a favorite is hard. So instead I let you live in the everlasting hell of not knowing who was best!
