  • @ishiaryan

My band was the local opener for 6FU around 2004 or so. Admission was $35 (for three locals and Six Feet Under). Roughly 1/2 of the tickets went unsold and Chris Barnes decided that it wasn't worth playing, so their merch guy grabbed the cash box and literally sprinted to the bus and the band left.
Since we heard what happened right when we were done playing, we took our time tearing down our gear while an announcement was made saying that 6FU had canceled. A rumor started circulating the crowd that we ran overtime and that 6fu couldn't play because we bumped them (which we didn't).
Long story short, I had to escape getting my ass beat by like 250 drunk Chris Barnes loyalists because the band literally decided at the last possible second that they weren't going to play, but stole all the money from the show making refunds difficult/impossible.

6-7 years ago when I was still on Facebook and followed their official page, they announced an European tour. It was mostly circling around Germany, Belgium and the surrounding countries. I was six beers deep, an asshole and commented, that doing gigs in four countries doesn't count as a tour of Europe, when you leave out close to ten other countries. A few hours later I got a private message from their page. Someone was asking, if I could organize gigs for them. I've never booked gigs, even with my own band and nothing on my page suggested, that I knew anything about booking a tour. At that time I was working in a warehouse. Took it as a sarcastic joke. But it wasn't, they were serious.

I remember he also assaulted Travis Ryan of Cattle Decapitation. I believe he posted something on Twitter along the lines of "not being a veggie burger eating pussy" and when Travis went to his tour bus to confront him, Chris sucker punched him. Cattle dropped from the tour, but played the same venues a day later for free with a few local bands, so fans didn't miss out. I got to hang out with Travis and he mentioned how sad it was to have someone he grew up listening to act like that. Cattle definitely showed what it was to be a masterclass.

True Carnage and Bringer Of Blood may aged badly, but they were pretty important at the time. They were heavily influenced by Nu Metal and Six Feet Under became an important gateway band to extreme metal. You saw young kids running around in their merch, who probably never heard about Cannibal Corpse and didnt give a shit about the "classic" DM sound on albums like Haunted. They were there for the stoner guy with dreadlocks doing rap growls over groovy and bouncy riffs. Heck there were straight up guest features by rappers. Thats what started the journey into DM for many people and deserves some credit.

You're exactly right here. I loved Six Feet Under, and when metal music went into the Nu era, SFU seemingly followed suit. Old heads like me hated it, but it honestly catapulted them out of the obscure and onto some huge metalfests. For that next generation of kids, SFU just was Death Metal. They didn't know the better stuff yet and the internet was just getting going. I cringed at him repeating Bringer of Blood over and over to that lame riff, but it was exactly like you stated, a gateway to extreme music.

Exactly my story:) SFU and Chris' lyrics dramatically expanded my mind and knowledge about extreme music as a 16-yo bong smoker in 2003, and I will always be grateful for those memories. The only real problem is - they should have quit the band when Steve Swanson left, and I still don't get it why Chris didn't just start a new band with Jack Owen instead of using the same old brand that once stood for something. Fans of fast music might find True Carnage boring - to me this is a stoned masterpiece.

It's easy to say that now. Years of smoking have destroyed Chris' voice. Yes, he sounds like shit now, but there's a reason he was considered one of the best Death Metal singers of his era. He had this versatility about him and was the kind of singer that few could imitate. Corpsegrinder is a machine, but he lacks the variety that Chris was able to produce in his glory days.
I guess you could see it like this; Corpsegrinder is your dependable truck that has repeatedly got the job done while Chris is a sportscar that turned heads twenty to thirty years ago before getting all rusted up from years of abuse.

Regarding the music: I have to agree with most of your comments on all of the albums except the comments on Crypt of The Devil. For me this is a really really good album, and actually I find a reason for it to be: the songwriting credits go to the Hall brothers of Cannabis Corpse. I find it way more interesting than the one in which Ola Englund was involved, but I guess all the hype and reputation about him made everyone to think his SFU was a 'better' album (despite being credited in the composition of only 2 songs). Crypt of the Devil has a lot of great riffs, great drumming and sounds good (production-wise). Regarding Nightmares of the Decomposed, the only part which makes me feel bad somehow is that the songwriting credits are for Jack Owen, which for me it's one of the best guitarists in the whole death metal genre.
Regarding Chris Barnes: one of the only complaints I have with the death metal fans / community is the fact that they should be more respectful with the 'iconic' part of Chirs Barnes. Of course the guy is special and probably belongs to another 'era' if you want to look at it like that, but let's be honest: he really had to cut through a lot of disadvantages and obstacles during his early Cannibal Corpse years. I mean, people tend to think that nowadays you can sing whatever you want and play your 'brutal' music because you have all the digital tools and all of that, but come on, CC was already playing Moscow in 1993! They had to go through a lot of barriers and censorship throughout the years and battle with prejudice and limitations. What we should understand, I guess, is that mostly no one, except the grumpy/cringy personality of Chris Barnes, could have been able to do the task of bringing bands like CC to the surface. If it wasn't because of his personality or eccentricity, most of Death Metal and subgenres wouldn't exist nowadays in the same way. Just let the old man keep growing old and stupid, who the f*ck cares anyway. If you don't like his music or shows, just stay away. Cheers!

You do realize that Brandon Ellis of Black Dahlia Murder fame was on that album too, right? It had a lot of very creative people working on it which is why many people regard it as a high point in SFU rather steady career of decent albeit lackluster music. Chris goes through phases where the guy either has his shit together or he doesn't. When he got together these great minds to play on Crypt of the Devil, he had his shit together.
Is it the best album ever? No.
Is it the best SFU abulm? No.
But what it did do was give two up and coming guitarists a spring board to jump from.

I saw Chris Barnes at a grocery store in Los Angeles yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.
He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”
I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying.
The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.
When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

Some people enjoy getting really high and being dicks in public. It just proves that before Chris was metal, he was punk.

"Maximum Violence" was the last listenable album from SFU. I remember hearing Graveyard Classics 1 for the first time as a kid, and even as a dumb brat that throught that Sepultura was the heaviest band on the planet i was clever enough to never ever heard anything from SFU again. Never seen a band jumping the shark so bad.

I might be one of the few that actually likes Six Feet Under specifically for their cringe factor lol the "EEEEEEEEEEEEE" Lyrics always bring a smile to my face and honestly, the "true death metal" controversy is funny and childish, especially coming from a fanbase that is supposed to be all about being offensive and being edge lords, suddenly gets offended when a dude says a thing on twatter.

I grew up with the old school Cannibal Corpse and though I liked them, the breakdown always lost me because they would have a killer riff and then lose it.
I found six feet under accidentally at the mall. I took a chance on it because I saw that Chris Barnes and Geezer Butler on the Same album.
Instant fan.. and my friends too

I'll admit I love old Six Feet Under. Simple and groovey, catchy and fun to blast in the car on the road. It brings back fond memories just out of highschool. Old Cannibal Corpse was some of the best death metal at the time and is surely regarded as classic albums. Where Six Feet Under went downhill was covering AC / DC and others in Graveyard Classics and all the mediocre crap released since. As a person, I couldn't care less about what he does.

I was there for the Seth Putnam incident, yeah it sorta sent down like that with Chris retreating to his bus and refusing to come out. Barnes's era of CC changed everything and The Haunted was great, but it sorta ends there for me. I always end up jumping ship when I feel like it's finally set sail.

  • @FJCheli

Six Feet Under started off strong, and by that I mean Haunted was pretty damn good, but IMO signs of Barnes vocal degeneration starting showing as far back as Cannibal Corpse's The Bleeding. George Fishers voice has remained constantly strong throughout his tenure with the band, while Chris has become barely a shell of his former self.
Now credit where credit is due, with his lyrics on the first 4 Cannibal Corpse albums he set a new standard for gory lyrics. Nowadays, its like he's a 14 year old kid who listened to old Cannibal and is trying to emulate......poorly. Also, I believe the first example of Barnes's patented "EEEEEEEEEEEEEE" can actually be found in his version of "Devoured By Vermin" before they hired Corpsegrinder.

      @LiamLovesMetal ปีที่แล้ว

I’d argue corpse grinders even gotten better with time. His vocals on torture were fucking insane for that late into the bands career
