She was truly the greatest. My all time fav is when she meets Bill Holden. Her putty nose catches on fire, (not intended or scripted) in front a live audience. Not only that, but there were reports from crew members of the show, that instead of the audience finding Lucy's pratfalls funny, they instead reacted with alarm and dismay while watching her do the comedic physical stunts at her advanced age. This is a case of a star's ego going to their head, of a star being afraid to give up the spotlight and relevance. Lucy took advantage of her popularity and fame and rested on the laurels of 'I Love Lucy' - she demanded complete creative control over the show, which included her choosing the executive producer and writers - instead of making Larry Gelbart (creator and ex. prod. of MASH) an executive producer like ABC recommended, she instead chose her inexperienced husband Gary Morton along with 'I Love Lucy' writers Madelyn Pugh and Bob Carroll Jr. as co-ex. prods. and writers for 'Life With Lucy', she refused to have a focus group give their critique of the pilot and made ABC agree to commit to a full season of episodes, sight unseen - there was no voice of reason or truth. When she left primetime TV in 1974 after 23 consecutive years she did it to re-launch her movie career which she attempted to do with the movie version of the musical Mame, the movie was universally panned with critics saying she was too old for the part and that she couldn't sing or dance and she fell into a deep depression that lasted many years. She received very positive reviews for her portrayal of an elderly homeless woman in 1985 in the made for TV movie Stone Pillow so she decided the time was right to return to a primetime series which she did with Life With Lucy in the fall of 1986. Unfortunately the show was ripped to shreds by critics saying that the gags were grossly outdated and that Lucy was way too old to be back on TV, it was also a ratings failure. It was cancelled after only 8 episodes. Lucy was absolutely devastated and many people believe this lead to her demise and subsequent death less than 3 years later. 1986 would prove to be a very bad year for Lucy having to deal with the cancellation of her show and then Desi's death in December of that year. Even though they were divorced they remained close and she always considered him to be the greatest love of her life.
Interesting story about Gary Morton. Many of Lucy's biographers have agreed with this. He was a user. He married Lucy to be a well tended golf bum. I could say more, but it really doesn't matter any more. We will always have Lucy at her best.

When she died someone being interviewed while paying respect at Lucy's Star on the Walk of Fame said simply, there was only one Lucille Ball and there will never be another one. So True! She had a remarkable career if you think about it and she was very very smart! The Tina Fey's and Amy Pollers who are our "Lucy's" of today do something quite different that Lucy, and comedy has changed. Carol Burnett is another rare gem who is so versatile.

It really strikes me to see the audience stand up for Lucy when she makes her entrance. In her later interviews and talk show appearances (70s and 80s) everyone in the audience stood up when a host introduced her. That to me, is prove that they really loved her.
I was only 7 when she died. But there were always repeats of her various shows on. Her laugh is the 1 thing that will stick with me. It was infectious. Rip.

It's very cool to see genuine laughs from Lucy here. She often talked about her distaste for blue humor, but CLEARLY she enjoyed it when Joan got a little naughty with her language or joking.
I have watched and loved all of the I Love Lucy shows as a child and as an adult now, it is so amazing and fascinating to see interviews of Lucille Ball and the other cast. It is amazing to see how much work went into the show which they made it seem so effortless. I love to see her in color. I think that she is the best 1950s star. No one was Desi and no one could replace him. She continued to depend upon him and she would cover up for him or help him if he ever got in trouble. Just reading her own book reveals her true feelings. ♥

I think the reason Life With Lucy didnt make it is because, i think, people are use to seeing her on I Love Lucy and being younger and they didnt want to see someone that age trying to do the same kind of stunts like when she was 40....I agree with someone else that the writing and the cast wasnt good. :( Lucy will always be #1

Glad I chanced upon this. I knew Joan Rivers had her own show and glad my first view was this. Both Lucy and JR are strong and funny. They take no prisoners! Tell it like it is and no regrets.
I remember the news, the final time she came back. My family loved her, and everyone we new loved her, and the new show. But, the media, said she was basically to old. We needed Social Media, back then, to here from the people. Lucille Ball was a great lady,and performer.
I was born in 88, and I wish I could have watched when Joan had her own talk show. I would love to experience Carson as well, but I've loved Joan the most.

I tried out for Joan for a day and was suppose to be one of the top semi-finalists and meet vip. I got the tickets to see the show but never got to meet her back stage. I really wish I had the opportunity still it was at a hard time for us both I lost my grandpa then and she soon had lost Edgar. I love both Joan Rivers and Lucille Ball. I'm glad I stumbled upon this video to watch. It was nice to see them again.
It really strikes me to see the audience stand up for Lucy when she makes her entrance.
In her later interviews and talk show appearances (70s and 80s) everyone in the audience stood up when a host introduced her. That to me, is prove that they really loved her.
That was when a standing ovation was TRULY a badge of honor. Nowadays, people will give a standing ovation to a good bowel movement. :)))'s
I just love Lucy. A true Legend indeed.

I was only 7 when she died. But there were always repeats of her various shows on. Her laugh is the 1 thing that will stick with me.

It's very cool to see genuine laughs from Lucy here. She often talked about her distaste for blue humor, but CLEARLY she enjoyed it when Joan got a little naughty with her language or joking.
I have watched and loved all of the I Love Lucy shows as a child and as an adult now, it is so amazing and fascinating to see interviews of Lucille Ball and the other cast. It is amazing to see how much work went into the show which they made it seem so effortless. I love to see her in color. I think that she is the best 1950s star. Thank you so much, it's amazing to see her interviews and outside of the set.

Lucy didn't fool anyone saying she was happy with Gary. I believe she was, but he wasn't Desi. No one was Desi and no one could replace him. She continued to depend upon him and she would cover up for him or help him if he ever got in trouble. Just reading her own book reveals her true feelings. ♥

This is great!!! I love Lucille Ball. I cried the day she died! I think the reason Life With Lucy didnt make it is because, i think, people are use to seeing her on I Love Lucy and being younger and they didnt want to see someone that age trying to do the same kind of stunts like when she was 40....I agree with someone else that the writing and the cast wasnt good. :( Lucy will always be #1

Glad I chanced upon this. I knew Joan Rivers had her own show and glad my first view was this. Both Lucy and JR are strong and funny. They take no prisoners! Tell it like it is and no regrets.
I remember the news, the final time she came back. My family loved her, and everyone we new loved her, and the new show. But, the media, said she was basically to old. We needed Social Media, back then, to here from the people. Lucille Ball was a great lady,and performer.

I tried out for Joan for a day and was suppose to be one of the top semi-finalists and meet vip. I got the tickets to see the show but never got to meet her back stage. I really wish I had the opportunity still it was at a hard time for us both I lost my grandpa then and she soon had lost Edgar. I am sorry for both of our losses were very difficult to lose such great men. I pray for you then and now that you would be comforted and bless you as he did with your grandbabe
