All my life I have wondered what the Gottschalk concerts for multiple pianos sounded like. He was famous for them, but they have gone out of style. In his day, a large number of people played the piano, so they would have been a ready audience. All music was live, and the most common was the piano. Now people don't play, they listen to recordings, like we are doing. For us, it is the easiest thing to hear a full orchestra. In Gottschalk's time, not so easy. I am very grateful for the opportunity to hear this historically valuable recording.

Triumphant! Gottschalk was so disapproved during his studies by the Europeans despite his proficient French and talent, and years later, his music is being presented by these great hands on this wonderful European stage with, after all, The Union!

The Europeans LOVED him! Women fainted at his piano playing.

@@thomashogan16 "Some" Europeans, yes! Gottschalk eventually returned to America and factually his years in Europe were very difficult for him.

This is actually a complete performance of "The Union" which incorporates "The Star Spangled Banner".

This concert paraphrase would be appropriate for any 4th of July celebration, even without fireworks - the virtuosic compositional artistry of Gottschalk in this patriotic multi-melody paraphrase in the music does provide the "fireworks" itself!

WFMT in Chicago makes it a point to play the Alan Fineberg recording each July 4th. They can make room for this!
