Huh didn't know about that but I did discover an infinite lives cheat in Sonic 1 that nobody else seems to know. You have to use debug mode. Finish an act with no lives left, switch into "item placement mode", position yourself below the ground, switch back to Sonic, fall off the level and die. If you time it right, it'll load the next level before it loads the game over screen. Congrats you now have infinite lives.

Sonic 2 was one of the earliest games I can remember playing. It was part of some CD game collection and occasionally I got to play Sonic 2 in particular. I was young and inexperienced so I never beat the game but I do remember getting to this stage and it always stuck out to me.
