      @Suzukiswiftlova : Although getting such car for $800 is not common, it's not impossible.
      It's possible that the garage could have told him it will cost alot to fix it, even though more work was not needed or only minor work was needed, and maybe sold it for reasons like that.
      Other times something like this happens, for example : The dad passes away, and the son that inherited the car and became the new owner of the car, but looking at the car reminds him too much of his dad, that's no longer with him, and pains him too much when he look at the car, since it floods him with old memories, so he decides to sell it fast putting it on a very low price, so hes not reminded alot less of what happened, which helps to reduce the pain, due to not reminding him of the mishap, or less reminders of the mishap.
      There are also times that bad memories are remembered about the car, and some people believe it was cursed or something like that, so they sell it low price to get rid of it, as early as possible.

      Also we both do have our valid points too.
      What I will say is that, we don't really know the details of how the car was obtained, since we were not there when it occured, in real time as it happened.
      But just for smiles and laughs, let's just say it was bought for $800, and let's leave it at that.

    That was very interesting. People often look at L98-powered C4 specs and think: 'Well, it only has 245 HP'. Yes, but it also has a fat torque curve with a maximum of 340 LB-FT at 3200 RPM. It pulls very hard from the moment you release the clutch, then runs out of breath at 5,000 RPM. That broad, big-block style power curve makes the C4 faster than it might look on paper.

    • @BeckersGarage
      @BeckersGarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      You're absolutely right! And the only reason the hp numbers are low is, like you said, it runs out of breath at the 5k rpm mark. Some head mods fix that, but for mine, some turbo mods are coming too! Then the full turbo kit

    • @michaellorenson2997
      @michaellorenson2997 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kingshabazz1310
      Yes you can, if you're so inclined. First of all, let's clarify test standards. Measured at the crank on an engine dyno, with no accessories in place (water pump, alternator, power steering pump, AC compressor, etc) and open headers, a stock aluminum head '87-'91 L98 probably makes close to 300 HP / 400 LB-FT. That's the SAE 'Gross' test everyone used prior to 1972. Under SAE 'Net' testing, with all accessories and stock exhaust in place, you get the factory rating of around 240 HP / 330 LB-FT.
      To get SAE Net 400 HP normally aspirated, you'll need a set of heads, a cam, an intake manifold with much shorter runners, possibly a carburetor or something like a Holly injection setup, improved cooling, probably some short headers, and a tune to take advantage of the changes. You will have to sacrifice the low-end grunt, in exchange for top-end power. Peak HP will come at 6,000 to 6,500 RPM, peak torque at around 4,500 RPM. At that point, you'll have the peak power of an LT-5 DOHC ZR-1 engine. Not bad for the old SBC. As a DIY project done right, it will probably cost $3,000-$4,000, but that's cheap as these things go. Shortcuts and used parts can make it cheaper.
      If you opt for a turbo setup, you can use the stock heads, maybe a mild cam, and the TPI intake. The RPM range will stay the same as stock, but the power will increase with boost. So will the risk of catastrophic failure. The engine's mechanicals better be up to the task, and the tuner better know what he's doing. You'll need serious cooling upgrades. On V-motors (V6 / V8 / V12), twin turbos are the obvious choice, but you can build a less efficient single turbo setup IF you can figure out how to plumb it. I would guess you'll spend $7,000-$8,000 on a proper DIY build, but there is the potential to make a hell of a lot of power.
      Some will say: 'LS swap it!' But, that's harder and more expensive than many would have you believe. For example, would you like to have a functional instrument cluster or air conditioning? What transmission will you use? Shift linkage? What engine management system? You'll need a custom exhaust, wiring harness, driveshaft, engine mounts, transmission mounts, and a hundred other details. Not so easy.

      I actually have been having this thought a lot lately. Whenever I get behind a car from the 80s it's amazing how much smaller it is compared to all new stuff. Cars have proportionately grown to the point where it's almost ridiculous. I saw a mid-eighties olds Cutlass the other day and couldn't believe how small it looked.

    When I was younger and the C4 came to market it was like nothing ever produced and as a young man making just a $150.00 a week. I wanted that car so bad, but at a price tag of $27,000.00 it wasn't in the cards for me at that time. Now 35 years later and the price of the vette within reach. I found one for a thousand dollars. It needed work and being mechanically inclined I purchased my dream car. After working on the engine and interior and putting $3,000.00 into the car I have a beautiful of my dreams and fast is a true understatement, the handling of the C4 on curves let's it sticks to the road. I'd put the C4 up against any modern car today. It's a pleasure to own and drive...

Then I got pulleys a chip a cam intake runners a cai and other bolt ons and went from 3.26 to 3.73 gears and it went insane. Ran very low 13's almost 13.0. Barely spent money on it . rebuilt the trans ( art carr) got me into the high 12's. Still hadnt touched the throttle body, intake, heads, cam, or block lol. I have z06's , ferraris , bmw's but that 1985 is special. Will drop an LS or LT motor in it since i have time now. Great video.
