If anybody was wondering why europeans are laughing at these tests, i just wanted to explain what you have to do in order to get the motorcycle driving license here in the eu. First theres a theoretical test consisting of one general part and another part motorcycle specific knowledge, theres a pool of about 1000 questions i think. Then there‘s the practical test that consists of a part in a car park similar to this test with the addition of an emergency stop and an evasive maneuver both from at least 31 mph and a figure eight in second gear which sounds way easier than it is. Finally there‘s the final part of the exam in which you have to drive in traffic basically perfect, this is by far the hardest and most feared test. If you fail any of those tests you do not pass and have to try again after taking a few more driving lessons.
Additionally we have to go through a system of stages regulating which motorcycle you‘re allowed to ride as most of you probably have already heard of.
Feel free to correct me if i‘m wrong.

What is not shown here is that there is a “written” exam. The riding portion is after 2-3 four hour sessions on the trainer bikes (125cc or 250cc) and 2-3 four hour classroom. After passing this “Final Exam”, you’re allowed to take the written portion and get the “M Class” indicator on your driver’s license. There are a few differences state to state on this procedure and the content. I can only speak for my state. For me, the Motor Vehicle Department for the State recognizes the MSF riding exam as shown here. I believe now, that the MSF is required to get the M Class. Before that, you could do it all yourself.

You forgot to say that every time you want to take the test, you have to pay for it. So if you fail 3 times, you pay 3 times.. and every lesson you do also costs. And every lesson is 45 minutes long. So the better you are, the less money it costs..
Also about that part why I personally think it’s not good to let ppl decide how safe they are: if you didn’t train enough you could run over a child or any other person. And there is also the psychological damage for the carrider that hits you...
Though I do think it’s tough in Europe, we live quite well with it :)
and btw, when you’re above 24 you can get any bike right after the test, yes, also a BUSA 😁

It's great to see two of my favorite "TH-camrs" playing together. I really enjoyed this video. It has been quite some time since I passed my motorcycle road test, so I also wonder if I could pass it again. Since rider skills are perishable, and I've not been on a motorcycle in ten years, I'm approaching getting back into riding from the standpoint of a noobie. I've been watching as many safety videos as humanly possible along with building a knowledgebase of which motorcycles are best for newcomers. I won't have a chance to actually build my skillset until I buy a bike, as many of the rental opportunities aren't local. So in the meantime I've purchased all the ATGATT one would need for protection. Thank you both for your respective channels. Be well and God bless.

When I took the DMV riding test in NJ, the slalom was different. It was approx 10ft from cone to cone with approx 2ft side to side offset/stagger. The instructor said you had to go wide around the outside of the cones. The MSF course my buddy took was a straight slalom setup. Still have no idea why the DMV course was different.

I live in New Zealand and have been riding for three years, there is three stages to our license, for your first stage you have to do a basic handling test, it’s a similar thing to this but it’s so much more in-depth, I can’t believe how easy it is in the US to get your license 😂

    • @ChrisJones-lq3cs
      @ChrisJones-lq3cs 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

James Kerr Same here in Australia, you spend two days doing a bit of theory and then bunches of handling assessments between standard braking, slowspeed control under IIRC 5km/h, emergency braking + shift to first, wide sweeps, tight 90degree corners.etc..
That's all just to get a "Learners Permit". Then ride by yourself for months, come back and do a 4 hour assessed ride, then a month later do a licence assessment test. Then it's a probationary licence for three years, then.... Finally after all that, it's Busa time 😂

Motorcycles aren't even that dangerous by themselves, if you know the basics of how to handle them, and get a ton of practice on the road. The real killer on the road is cars. Almost every motorcycler death is caused by a car. We don't need stricter motorcycle training, but stricter car training. If drivers licenses were harder to get, more like an MSF course for cars. We would see way less biker deaths, more bikers, and safer roads all around.

I'm in the UK doing my bike tests. From 16 you can only do a CBT (compulsory basic training) that will give you a 50cc limit. At 17 that'll give you a 125cc limit. I'm 32 and can go for a full license but still need the CBT first then I have the mod 1 training and test that covers 3 days and is very similar to what you have done in this video. The swerve is a minimum of 32mph along with an emergency stop at the same 32mph minimum. I have passed that and now need to do the mod 2 which is all on the road to show I'm confident and safe on the road. I'm doing the "direct access" course at a little over £800 but that includes hire of the bikes needed , training 2 students to 1 instructor and the cost of the tests. You guys have it easy if that's all you need to do to get an open license

  • @SwampCityRadio1974
    @SwampCityRadio1974 4 ปีที่แล้ว

In Australia, it was about 2007 I passed my test, we had a slow straight riding test between two lines with failure for touching the lines, stopping or putting a foot down and it was timed. You couldn't cross the finish line before the minimum time mark, from memory about 15 seconds which tested your capacity to drag the rear brake. We had tight figure eights within a box where failure resulted from touching the lines or not following the sequence. The emergency brake test was randomized, so you had to start braking when the instructor dropped his hand instead of at a pre-determined line, I think there was a weave test but I can't recall for sure. The training was pretty good with a theory component in the class room, and the on course training included practice on negotiating hazards like safely riding over a piece of timber, U turns, swerving to avoid hazards, braking and so on.

If you're doing your A license (unrestricted) then you've got to do both parts on the class of bike your going for (unrestricted must be greater than 600cc I think it is)

I grew in TX in the 80s before MC licenses were a thing. I was "grandfathered" as I already owned a bike when the law changed.
When I moved to CA in the USMC (1989), I had to take the course in CA. When I moved back to TX a decade later, my MC endorsement was lost.
So, I got take the course yet again in TX during the early 2000s. I did it that time on a FJ1300.
"That's a lot of bike for a new rider." "I'm not a new rider." That was born out.
As a side note, that FJR1300 was one of the best bikes I've ever owned. I put over 45k miles on it in two years.

My first bike was an Aprilia Tuono that I inherited from my dad. I used a smaller bike to take the MSF, and I grew up riding dirt bikes so I had good throttle and clutch control already, but it's definitely possible to get a beast for your first bike and be safe about it. The bike only goes as fast as you tell it to, you just have to be extra careful with the throttle inputs when the bike has 150 horsepower.

The crazy thing is that in Europe (Netherlands) we have to do multiple(5-12 generally) lessons and hours of practice of twelve! of these kind of exercises. After that we have to take a first exam showing we can handle the bike well and after that we can then take lessons on the road, and then take a second exam. Such a difference with how to get your license in America. I do really think people here in europe do learn to ride better because of these lessons and exams, and traffic is really different here. You cant also start on a 200 hp bike here.....

In Sweden you firstly take lessons practicing riding on a school or (privately like an endorsement to ride whenever you want if you bring your dad) and then when you are ready, two safety courses about drugs and emergency (kinda like a msf course) situations. After all that then you can if you feel ready do the written test and if you pass that and only if you pass that you can go on to the last step which is the final driving test which is in two parts. The first part is bike control (check the brakes or tires etc.) and then handling of the bike through a evasion maneuver,u-turn,slow speed, high speed braking 30-50 mph. The second part is a traffic test( the real world test). If you pass you can ride the bike directly. All this CAN cost around 2.000 $ - 4.000 $ (20.000 SEK - 40.000 SEK) if you do it through a school and maybe struggle as a complete beginner but I did all the practicing with a private tutor my dad so I felt ready and I got the price down to 600$-700$ (about 6.500 SEK). I did the test on a Yamaha Tracer 700 GT but I also went to different motorcycle stores and tried 12 different bikes before I went and bought the one I later did the test on and passed.

2 % off all fatal accidents in the Netherlands are motorcyclist. the a2 motorcycle license (max 47hp/35kw) is now possible with a code 80, it means if you're 21 and you are going for an at driverslicense you won't have to do another exam for the A license (unresticted), but after to years you just get it your drivinglessons are also on an unresticted bike. Im doing it right now myself and hope to get my license next month. Hope I helped someone with this. Btw love your vids

In Bulgaria(East Europe) the to get a motorcycle license, (the practical) test involves 2 stages. First you must show the abbility to handle the bike in a closed area(parking lot ) that involves slow speed riding in figure 8 (twice) then a slow speed slalom in the end of wich you have to get a passanger on to ride with. After that there is a 30 km/h slalom with a U turn at the end without touching the gound, accelerating to 50km/h and making an evasive maneuver. After that a emergency stop from 60km/h into designated spot.
If you complete all that, then you must complete a 30 minute urban setting ride with a follow-up car in wich is the inspector from the local DMV.

There are european countries that allow you to ride a Hayabusa as a starter.
Germany: Begin with a theory test. After that, you have usually 9-10 hours on a 650 owned by an instructor with said instructor, take three individual test out of that MSF test, go for a 45 minute ride with a DMV official in a car following you with your instructor, then you're free to ride whatever - provided you're 24 or older on the day of your test. I've seen vlogging dudes that started out on a S1kRR.
However, I don't think a Turbobusa would pass technical inspection and as such, wouldn't get a license plate.

man, here in the province of Quebec in Canada, you have to do the written exam on road signs and road knowledge. then do another test for your knowledge on motorcycle handling and manipulation. Once you pass both those test, you book an appointment to start your closed track test (kinda like they just did), and if you pass the test, they give you your learner's license which let you ride your bike and get practice in and hours of riding time (with another rider or alone), for 11 months. At the end of those 11 months of practicing, you do your road test exam witht the teacher and based on what motorcycle you ride during that test, you get a certain level of motorcycle license. For example: Class 6D (50cc or less), Class 6C (125cc or less), class 6B (400cc or less) and finally class 6A any two wheeled motorized vehicle with any type of engine size (Any cc's motorcycle). And from there you just need to pay to get you license and papers and all and your good to go. So essentially, the written and driven exams can be done within 1 month if you don't mess around and pass everything and 11 months later you pass you road test and get your license. AND that's how you get your full motorcycle license in Quebec Canada. I know for a fact the other provinces work a little differently but over all it all comes to the same. :)

the way the uk licence works is very strict,
at 16 years old you can do 50 cc CBT (compulsory basic training)
at 17 you can do a 125cc CBT (compulsory basic training)
then at 19 years old you can an A2 ( restricted to 35k/w or 46.6hp) licence, you need to complete a theory test first, then have a valid CBT, after that you need to complete 2 practical tests (mod1 and mod2)
after 2 years you can then do your all access licence ( ride any motorbike)
or there is the alternative route and wait till your 25 years old, complete the theory test, CBT then you do the 2 practical tests (mod1 and mod2),
then you can go straight to a full motorbike licence.

I don't know about the rest of Europe, but I suspect it's similar in most of the EU. In my country there are 3 categories, but it's not exactly a tier system you have to go through. A1 is for people between 16 and 18 years old. A2 is for people at least 18 years old and you can get the highest A licence after 2 years of having A2, but it's not required. If you don't have A2 you can still get A directly, but after you reach the age of 24. Also you can ride a 125cc class motorcycle with a B driving licence, which is a standard driving licence for passenger cars.

I also think the self-learning system in the UK is helpful. After some basic training you go out there and teach yourself on a 125 that won't try to kill you every time you twist the throttle. After 3 months I flew through mod 1 and mod 2 on a big bike (MT-07) and now I can ride anything. If you are younger you will do different tiers but if you have one tier prior to upgrading you don't need to redo all the tests(Depends on tier if i am correct but for some you can skip theory and safety riding course maybe even the last driving test).

She ate shit on one turn and used it as an example of what not to do. She went into a turn incorrectly and ended up dropping it at a low speed. She said she immediately recognized she fucked up and did what she called a controlled crash. She also emphasized the importance of gear at this point and kept the suit she had on that day. It was chewed up but she was fine. Immediately bought a similar one that day. People made fun of me but I didn't'r care. If I ate shit I knew road rash wouldn't be too much of a concern if it was a low speed crash.
