All of the trains are actually a young boys toys. The idea of the show is that it’s a dream the boy has when he goes to bed. It’s addressed in the beginning. It sets the tone for the play and allows you to get past the biases that Dandelion, the other commenter seems to have. It’s a phenomenal play that touches on how amazing and vivid a child’s imagination can be. I saw this live in Las Vegas as a kid and fell in love with it. To be fair I loved Cats as well. 🤷♂️

They gave the “pro’s” a damn good skate for their money. And all done for the love of preforming. The costumes, makeup, stage design , actually everything was bloody incredible.

Apparently it was a combination of being asked to compose a version of Cinderella where the Prince was going to hold a competition to see which engine would lead the royal train and Cinderella and the step sisters were engines, ALW wanting to adapt Thomas the Tank Engine to an animated series, and him writing a song specifically for Earl Jones who could sing three notes at once (Engine Of Love). And probably cocaine.
He did it for his child I think, he said can you make a musical of Thomas the train so he wanted to make his wishes come true and he made starlight express
Dude, you do realize that the Original Cast fought for years to get Hazard Pay for this, right? Almost every show, there was some injury or another. Expecting a HS musical theatre troupe to do this would be CATASTROPHIC.
Nice performance! The great Greg Mowry, in the original Broadway production, however, was the benchmark! What a gifted, talented performer, with such depth and believability! Can't believe he stopped performing after Starlight - I feel cheated of more of his performances! Greg, hope you are blessed and well.
