I just watched this and was thinking that his phrasing of "Rusty, you're blind..." pretty much destroys the line. Who the hell is that guy? He also can't act AT ALL.
Yes, same for me,we had the CD player it in the car ,my daughters loved it...my daughter was in a soccer league Grammer school 5 th grade....I pointed out moments in this song.....it helped her through awkward times. Goosebumps here too.
I was 13 years old and was lucky enough to be in New York in 87 and saw this on broadway .... it blew me away for an Aussie from a small town .... amazing
Remember this on Broadway, when Rusty becomes the Starlight Express his suit glittered like stars! Beautiful song and moment! Thanks for the upload and memories!
I saw this in London in 1993 and LOVED it!! So glad I stumbled on this now. Like being a kid again. The trip down memory lane was worth it! It's the story of The Little Engine That Could...for grown-ups and set to rock 'n roll! Doesn't get any better than that!!
The first musical I saw in the United States. I visited Las Vegas in 1996 and, being a fan of Andrew Lloyd Webber's music, I bought the tickets for this show. It was really amazing. I would like to see it again.
After the bow and during the camera sweep, you can very briefly catch Andrea McArdle (original 1977 Broadway Annie) at about 4:28 (she’s in between and just behind the performer wearing bright red chest headlights and the one with the dark single side pony tail). Later on in the show during a long medley with many of the night’s Tony performers and nominees, she appeared on her skates with one of her Starlight castmates doing a very brief duet and some impressive skate/dance moves.
I was there somewhere in the audience and what a show xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx loved it and still love it and in love with it 1997 2007 2017 and 3 is 33 years ago xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
First musical I ever watched when I went with my class to London around 1990. Fond memories, and still love the music to this date 🙂 Also great set with the moving bridge.
I was lucky enough to see this 3 times in its opening 2 years in London. My first time was just outside the inner track and then second time inside the inner track. Third time was nearer the back. I note here there isn't barriers up near the crowd - in London there was these perspex things that came up to protect you in case of any high speed roller-skating mishaps! It really was the most extraordinary thing I've ever seen, and we used to listen to the soundtrack at home REALLY loud! (" CONTROL CONTROL....!!").
My all time favorite character from Starlight. The Red Caboose. Everyone has known a Red Caboose in their lives. As Playbill said, "He's trouble on any track."
I went to see this and thought what is a musical on skates, I was blown away and the music still sends me shivers .....awesome it was ....I would have loved to appeared in the west end xxxxx
I remember seeing it at the Rivera! I was less than ten years old, and I remember how cool the stage was! A backup dancer made eye contact with me and waved, and I just thought I had died and gone to heaven.
I saw the production in Londons West End Apollo theater three times. I believe it was the cast that was on the original production. I still have Ray Shell's autograph somewhere. How I miss that. I would go back for a revival of that.
I actually saw this at Tuacahn, which was the first time I had ever seen it. Had been listening to the music for ages but that was that first time I actually manage to make it to a performance. It was quite wonderful for they went all out including making parts of it 3D (i.e they had a 3D Screen from some of the Race Scenes which was quite awesome.) Really want to find a place to see it again. Too bad its no longer in Vega. /sigh/ That said I heard this performance was one of the best of the lot. Thanks for posting it.
Gonna audition for this at Tuacahn next year, mad nervous, I show strong respect for this musical due to it's skating it just bugs me with people would compare to a cartoon. People try doing dancing and stunts on skates for two hours.
The video is on TH-cam. You can probably find it. It had good bits. Definitely not Bochum, by any stretch. Also, I didn't really get behind their footwear decisions.
I visited London in 1992/3ish for the first time and initially was reluctant to go to the show. It turned out been a memorable experience and I remember leaving emotionally uplifted by the performance. Could anyone suggest where I can find this track by these original artist? Andrew Lloyd's recording on Apple Music starts off with it then suddenly jumps to another performance. I have it on a old CD but would like try get a digital copy. Or if there is a old DVD of this performance that would be a bonus.
I’m just gonna say it: I double dare Broadway to make a revival of this show in 2024. Will it happen? Definitely not. Why? Given the fact that the current climate of modern audiences are softer than Charmin toilet paper, the set itself is extremely difficult to put on and how physically demanding the show is for performers to do, there’s no way that Broadway in this day and age will have the balls to revive this show
Smh. I guess you're entitled to your own opinion. But why are you here? You have to actually select to view this video. If you think this musical is so bad... again, why are you here? I for one love musicals and was very fortunate to see this in London in 1996. As a 80s NY kid, seeing ads and commercials for this show was exciting. It seemed like a movie. Then it was gone. When i saw this in 1996, even at age 20, I was a kid all over again!
@Warren Moore I don’t think Andrea would want you to pity her for this show. She’s talked in interviews about loving this experience (until she broke her foot on stage and had to drop out).
Goddammit...his phrasing on "Rusty you're blind, look in your mind" gives me goosebumps
I just watched this and was thinking that his phrasing of "Rusty, you're blind..." pretty much destroys the line. Who the hell is that guy? He also can't act AT ALL.

spoiler, dumbass
You must’ve seen one of the preview shows!
When regular shows started, that idea was dropped since it was too complex to pull off!
So grateful for this upload! Frank Mastrocola is my uncle and played Rocky I in this production. LOVE seeing him onstage again, made my day.
***** He WAS the best Rum Tum Tugger!! I'm bias but I totally agree. haha You rock, Robert!
***** That's amazing and I love it!
Frank was always so kind to me. I pulled him around the Gershwin stage for almost 2 years. Great guy and so talented!
Greg J Oh my goodness! Greg Mowry? Your performance in Starlight was truly stellar and had a huge affect on me. Thank you for bringing Rusty to life!
@@gjm2669 Wow you were in this production ????????????????
And people think Cats is bonkers, they have no freaking clue how weird ALW can get.
Not weird , try very talented. Remember this was back in simpler times. Weird is some of the films and games that come out now. This is true talent.
Racing singing train cars on roller skates- sliding up and down ramps and bridges,,, ,only you have the power to move me❤❤❤
Yes, but they can be great in execution
This is the cast I saw in NY. Made a big impression in my life. Cast was amazing!
I saw this in London in 1993 and LOVED it!! So glad I stumbled on this now. Like being a kid again. The trip down memory lane was worth it! It's the story of The Little Engine That Could...for grown-ups and set to rock 'n roll! Doesn't get any better than that!!
Little Engine That Could, with Cinderella ( Rusty) in the bargain.
Andrew Lloyd Webber came up with Starlight Express after wanting to adapt Thomas the Tank Engine into a musical cartoon!
I can't help but wonder what it was like pitching the idea for this when they first made it.
the pitch session for thomas the tank engine, but drunk
Well... it was Andrew Loyd Weber after all.. so, I think because of that.. and the music/lyrics... they said YES!!!
@Robert Lee, Countertenor I know ;)
Plenty of weed and booze was involved
Andrew Lloyd Webber made this show for his child, a son.
The first musical I saw in the United States. I visited Las Vegas in 1996 and, being a fan of Andrew Lloyd Webber's music, I bought the tickets for this show. It was really amazing. I would like to see it again.

Saw the original in London Victoria Apollo. This song still gives me goosebumps when I hear it
First musical I ever watched when I went with my class to London around 1990. Fond memories, and still love the music to this date 🙂

Saw this 10 times great experience

It really was the most extraordinary thing I've ever seen, and we used to listen to the soundtrack at home REALLY loud! (" CONTROL CONTROL....!!").
I LOVE "I Am The Starlight!!"
I saw this in Victoria Apollo it was out of this world and only just turned 18
I loved this musical as a child would love a campy revival of this!
I actually love "I am the Starlight".
I bet it would've been awesome seeing the stage show live. It looked really cool from this.
I didn't know Wesley Snipes and Ray Liotta did Starlight Express.
That would be the most violent musical of all time.
I dont think they want you to know
I would pay to see that!
This show ran for 18 years in the west end…..
I loved SE. I remember seeing it in Vegas with Riva Rice! Was amazing!
I remember seeing it at the Rivera! I was less than ten years old, and I remember how cool the stage was! A backup dancer made eye contact with me and waved, and I just thought I had died and gone to heaven.

Fantastic, saw it in London a few years ago..fab
Thank you all for your wonderful comments LOVE you all POPPA ( STEVE FOWLER)
When to this with my mom when it was in NYC. Loved it....
the best musical ever ....written by RIchard Stilgoe
Nice job coaching, Michael. I remember teaching you back in the early 70's at the Santa Rosa, Ca. rink. Always knew you would do well.
Starlight Express is my favorite musical because it is the only show that makes me want to grab my skates, roll.onto the stage and join the cast.
Every other tony performance that night must have been like 'fuhhhhhhh'
I actually saw this at Tuacahn, which was the first time I had ever seen it. Had been listening to the music for ages but that was that first time I actually manage to make it to a performance. +Deathzealot It's still running at Bochum. It's got a world record for most musical attendees at a single venue. It must be doing something right. :D
❤😂
Gonna audition for this at Tuacahn next year, mad nervous, I show strong respect for this musical due to it's skating it just bugs me with people would compare to a cartoon. People try doing dancing and stunts on skates for two hours.
Daniel Caraballo heard the tuacahn show was shit. Was it?
The video is on TH-cam. You can probably find it. It had good bits. Definitely not Bochum, by any stretch. Also, I didn't really get behind their footwear decisions.
Good luck! Remember,,, you are the Starlight.
Best version ever
Yes, she played Dinah - the part that was originated by Frances Ruffelle in the OLC.
What I would give to have footage from this whole show... D: Thank you for uploading.

You can see her most clearly at 3.40 and during the curtain call. She is wearing a blue costume with a blonde wig.
The #2 Musical of All Time ...just ahead of Les Miserables and behind Wicked.
So, basically this is CATS on Wheels..
Christopher Cherry maybe there’s a joke here I’m not getting, but no, not at all
I love how there is an electra in cats and in Starlight Express
Same creator
Just believe in yourself!
I LITERALLY HAD THE SAME REACTION.
net zelfstandig en dan van je eerste centen naar londen en starlight expresse, daarna nog 10 keer gezien
Wasn't Jane Krakowski part of the OBC? Is she on this video?
halsatia go to 3:11 and slow down the video to .25 speed. She’s second from the inside with a silver thing on her head.

musical extravaganza starlight express lyrics by richard stilgoe and music by andrew lloyd weber
I’m here because of Family Guy
Poppa Stephen Fowler
He sang "power" correctly in the second song. What the hell is up with that?
And at first, I thought he was the "coal car."
Yuk, yuk, yuk.

did you see the musical..? do you not get the point?
you hitch
Idk what this is…but I know Andrew Lloyd Webber made it.
Oh crap their on skates!?!
I'm only here because of family Guy!
Jonathan tyson mee too bro me too
One of the WORST shows I ever had seen on Broadway! Poor Andrea McCardle. This was her return to Bway.
I saw it at the Apollo 3 times! One of the best musicals I have ever seen.
Florentine 318 wow you didnt lime wicked?
Interesting. I really enjoyed the Bochum version. Sad that Broadway didn't pull it off.

That looked terrible.

Yeah it really wasn’t though, it’s got a fuckload of good points in every category
