      15 mph max this thing is underrated atvs aren’t really made for speed in general that’s a dirt bike thing

      @@dawson_bruinsma8218 Some what disagree. Up here in central NY, we have 100s of miles of trails. All trails were you are easily able to ride all day at 60mph or more. Even my old sportsman 700 twin can keep up being able to reach 65mph with ease.

    Man. I can't lie. I have a 15 year old Honda Rancher. And other than putting gas, oil, and tires on it. It still runs like a champion. The kids love it, and that's what I use it for. Simple, reliable, fun for the guests.
    With that said I haven't bought another one. I needed more power and had to get a CanAm and now a Polaris 1000 to be able to get thru some of the terrain that I ride. Both of those bikes have had multiple times in the shop from everything electrical, mechanical, and suspension issues.
    I wish Honda would make a 800 or 1000 with some real suspension. That would be a game changer for the quad market. A great performing, powerful, reliable, machine.

      That's why I won't even consider the domestic brands. Power is nothing when you're broken down on the trail. Funny, I was on my way to my cottage and passed a flat bed tow truck with a Polaris rzr on board.

      Can't beat Honda reliability. They are expensive. For the price of this Honda 500 you could get into the 800 range elsewhere. I prefer knowing I'll get to my destination. I wish my 2018 Honda had more power for sure, but it's good enough for what I do and it's needed nothing but oil changes.

    I bought one of these partly based on this review...have 10 hrs on it so far and love it. The reverse gear process is a much needed improvement. It is low powered compared to most other machines but my last ride was at 16MPH max speed...12 MPH average. The terrain was tough and tight...the Rubicon was the perfect machine for that trail.

  • @cjr4497
    @cjr4497 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I bought a 2016 new and I am still extremely happy with it. Zero trips to the shop! For hunting and property work it is extremely capable. I have never found a chore it couldn't handle. You can't beat gear on gear for low end and reliability. It goes plenty fast. I have no need to go over 45 mph on an atv.

      Personally (yup my opinion only) Honda has had the best engine for reliability/longevity but lacked in keeping up with chassis design, like IRS. Not sure why but Kawasaki took a while too. I think this is why farmers bought Honda’s, dead reliable and they were not out trail riding for fun. I will never forget riding an early Yamaha , had to avoid EVERY pothole, jumped onto a Polaris.....wow what a difference! Went over the potholes at high speeds without a care!
      The reason I am thinking about this bike....the transmission. No more belts! I am much older now and really don’t think I need or will use a big bore machine so I just want a reliable trail machine .

    I was drinking the Honda Kool-Aid for about 25 years. Lived Honda, breathed Honda and even worked for Honda building their cars and SUV's. Having owned two Honda Ranchers and recently a Pioneer 700 I decided to sell my two Ranchers, because the kids or wife wasn't riding them, and bought a 2019 Yamaha Kodiak 700. Prior to making the switch I immediately started looking at Honda's line up, the Rubicon 520. I thought, why. I started looking at other brands specifically Yamaha. I looked at HP ratings and reliability. The 'domestic' brands were out of the question because of reliability issues. My Pioneer 700 with it's lack luster power, especially with 4 people on board, had me convinced to try Yamaha. Glad I did. Yeah Honda has no belts and their machines are bullet proof but Yamaha is just as reliable and has the best CVT system on the market. The Kodiak ride and power was night and day compared to the Honda's I did own. I almost drunk the Honda Kool-Aid again. Sorry Honda.

    • @SketchyXC
      @SketchyXC 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I dont understand why they havent stepped up the hp across the lineup. I grew up on honda and yamaha, they were always right there with each other and the best out there. Now idk what honda is going for. With the exception of the Talon it seems like they sell pure boredom these days. Still good machines but lost their edge.

    • @ve3xtr
      @ve3xtr 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@SketchyXC Ya want to really know why they do what they do? I've learned that when they established their name back in the 1990's their sales skyrocketed and they got the loyal customer base. Like one poster on this page put it, "It's a Honda". So the company 'thinks' they can sell products based on the Honda name and emblem while cost cutting and doing very little R&D. Seriously though...they went from a 500 to a 520?? Typical. Just like their Civics, 1.5, 1.6, 1.7, and so on....As I put it, Honda tosses their customers bread crumbs with each model change. They want to keep YOU coming back and purchasing their products with each model change.
      I like my Pioneer 700 BUT they could have done some little things to bump up the HP. Higher compression (Yamaha) longer stroke. Give customers the option of purchasing a OEM 'performance' ECU that will adjust the fuel curve and give the engine a little more grunt. Nope! Honda 700, 36HP, Yamaha 700, 47HP. Which would you choose?

    The Good - The green paint job is sharp! The front bumper and aluminum wheels. Water tight storage space. DCT is good, but expensive.
    The Bad - No standard winch at this price range is mind boggling. Styling from the rear is just okay but for safety purposes it should have more than a center brake light. Not nearly enough storage.
    The Ugly - 30hp for a 520 cc engine in 2020 is ridiculous. Polaris Sportsman 500cc engines had more hp in the early 2000's. 45 mph speed limiter is down right Draconian.
    Some people will be fine with the hp numbers, I have no problem with that at all. You can still have fun. But for me, like Luke, it wouldn't be enough. When you consider the hp numbers from the competition for the same price range, I could never justify buying it. Some situations simply call for more power.

I road a rincon 1st...it sucked, I road a 20118 rubicon, it sucked even more, then lastly the guy said try the rancher, it was fun! i could get it to spin the tires and lift the front end at times. Im came of 60hp+ built atvs so it was hard to adjust. A week later i tried all the atvs again, even all the models within the models. the rubicon 500 (475 just didnt have the fun power) the rincon had some but i felt it was more of a 2wd machine. I bought my wife the highest level of rancher 420 irs, then we ripped it to the frame and built it up for her. If the 520 would of be around this might of been the model i chose...but hondas are just plain old utility atvs. once you get they thru you thick heads its ok. So I sold it and bought a 2017 Rubicon with PS. I love everything but the absolute lack of power. I ended up selling it to a buddy of mine and bought a 2016 Brute Force 750 with PS. Loved the power, but the ride and ability to corner sucked. So I sold it. Please Honda put PS on the Rincon just the way it is!! Honda has the Model T in the ATV world. Henry Ford wouldn’t change the model T (fords only vehicle at the time), 15-20 years no retooling. Black or green. Then Chevy, dodge came around with many options. Ford changed to the Model A, sexier Ford version. The Model A was really Axel Fords show. However Henry took credit. The first generation had 499cc which I have a 01 with over 5000 miles & will never part with it because I like that engine braking & still have original rear brake drum but I had to replace front brakes because one side got salt in it that rusted it up.
    I wished there was a video to show how the engine braking actually works on the new ones. Mine I can give it gas then let go & my body momentum what’s to keep going forward. Going down steep hills I put it in low 1st or put it in low automatic but I have to give it a little gas to kick it in. I wish there was a video to compare old 500 Hondamatic to new 520 DCT to compare engine braking & all that. I would like a new one for trail riding & keep the old one for plowing. Never will I put a plow on a newer machine because of salt on roads.

    I do not reccomend buying a Honda ATV, there are much better options. But if you insist on living in the 80s and drinking Honda cool aid. Then get the foot shift, strait axle machine. I've ridden both and the foot shift is still reliable. The DCT can leave you stranded. And the strait axle gives a sportier feel and is lighter and simpler. The IRS rides better but it's still far behind the competition. You"ll also save a good bit of $ on those two features. The only problem with this is that I don't think you can get power steering and no IRS or DCT. I may be wrong on that though. Just haven't personally seen it. But I still think that your better off with a CF Moto if you want a 500 with power steering. Way cheaper and in my experience just as reliable and more standard features.

    What isn't emphasized enough in this review or any I've seed. Honda's ATV's are WAYYYY more reliable and require WAYYY less maintenance then pretty much anything else, especially the big bores. Having Canams, polaris Etc my whole life this deference in these key departments cannot be overstated. You give up performance certainly. But the difference in reliability and regular maintenance is night and day. Then, even when you perform that maintenance the Honda is so much better thought out, designed and overall easier to work on. Its not even close. You can nearly anything with 3 or 4 sockets sizes. Most regular maintenance is like 1 or 2 sizes. Compared to Canam or Pol its almost silly how bad they are thought out. I love my Canam, and continue to respect it for what it is. I also have national pride by it being Canadian. But Honda is on a whole other level. If you want to have a machine that always works. Buy a Honda.

      Totally agree. Underpowered, overpriced, and crap ride and suspension. I dont give a rip about classes, you can get an 850 for the same price as this 520. And I absolutely don't see any difference in reliability anymore. A belt is a better solution and last just fine if your not an idiot and maintain your machine. Its no mystery why honda is loosing losing market share so quickly. You listening honda? Put some effort in. We need the Talon engine in an ATV with minimum 10" of suspension.

    • @Drake5153
      @Drake5153 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rickvann3489 yes, and no. Of course they can make a good engine lol, their's plenty of them out there from cars, to bikes, quads, equipment. I think your confusing good with POWERFUL. Yes, it's taken them a bit to include options that others have, BUT I've never experienced problems with said options the way I have with EVERY OTHER QUAD. Yes, other quads CAN be reliable, BUT, theres a reason you see Honda's AROUND THE WORLD and not other brands, specifically in countries that have less than me and you, where reliability TRULY counts. I have YET to see ANY OTHER BRAND be able to be COMPLETELY swamped, then fire back up after emptying the water in 10 minutes, something belt drives and v-twins can't do. And I've never had a problem with the suspension lol it's made to suit the quad, it's not a sport quad, and you have to ride it as such. BUT, I will agree that its overpriced for what it is, yet they still sell and most mature people happy. Hell, I don't know that many people that have been hurt on Honda's, but I know of people that have been SERIOUSLY HURT, if not KILLED on polaris, canam, and yamaha... not that their really to blame, but theres a reason lol.
