    China built the wall up a few times in their history to protect against the invading Mongolians. Every time, the wall was a complete waste of resources that the Chinese were forced into because they ran out of options to deal with the Mongol's superior warfare capabilities. Every time, the wall was completely ineffective, being impossible to guard at every point because of its enormous length. The Manchurians easily crossed the walls to raid nearby cities frequently, and in the 1600s they united and completely conquered China after crossing the wall. The wall did next to nothing.
    This guy opens his argument with an assertion about a historical subject he knows nothing about and believes the opposite about. Good start to a debate!

      Nich Candor Its infuriating. I wouldnt have moved on from that point, I would have drilled it in. While at it, Id include other examples of failed walls, like Hadrians, or the Berlin wall.

      Before Genghis Khan Mongols did not even have siege engines and they started building it 7th BC the fuck are you talking about? It was used against nomadic raiders and served well enough even Wikipedia says so. Where did you pull out this shit that the wall was useless?

    • @nichcandor
      @nichcandor 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Vardas Pavardenis Read the entire wiki before you summarize it:
      "The Manchus were finally able to cross the Great Wall in 1644, after Beijing had already fallen to Li Zicheng's rebels. Before this time, the Manchus had crossed the Great Wall multiple times to raid, but this time it was for conquest."
      The wall was a waste of resources and didn't curb the Manchurian raids. The whole reason it was useless is because an enormous wall on any front is only useful keeping people out if there are sufficient men stationed at every point. You could find weak points everywhere on the Great Wall and cross it with a ladder, and the Manchurians did throughout a LARGE portion of China's history to raid and plunder villages.
      Maybe when you say it "served well enough" you didn't get to the part where essentially a united group of bandits crossed the wall and conquered ALL OF CHINA for nearly 300 years.

      Sure, microwaves, stoves, ovens, cars, TVs, phones, are all luxury items. If you don't LITERALLY need them to sustain your life by eating them or using them as shelter, they're a "luxury," Capitalism at its best, scorning people for wanting a comfortable life.

    • @RealTaIk
      @RealTaIk 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mad Jack Churchill Normally every household has a stove so if you get a microwave it's a luxury item cause you don't need it if you have a stove. If you already have a desk, a second desk would be a luxury item. If your bathroom is not designed to have a door, getting a door is a luxury item.

      @800mEric I was an electrician. Yes you can make it off of just trades but to be fair the path to making good money in these trades isn’t guaranteed. The best you can hope to do is get into a union, not everyone does.
      The most money I made was when I would work side jobs and OT, which is a very easy possibility in the trades but I’m working more hours and giving more of my life to do it.
      My wife is an RN the second she got her degree she was making as much as my forman did off the rip and she could have made more if she went to work at a hospital. I can tell you my opinion, if I could go back I would get a degree in engineering, you have so much more flexibility and such a better quality of life.
      I was in the electrical trade which isn’t even a “bad” trade but I still feel like it sucked and would never push my children into a trade first and foremost, sure if it’s what they want to do go ahead but I want them to understand there are better things out there that are just better for them in terms of pay and quality of life.

    Destiny: You more likely to get seriously injured in a construction job than sitting in office job all day.
    Dumb Canadian : No, I totally disagree.
    You aren't going to get far with people like this, not because they are right, nor because their arguments are good or even tenable, but because they will not agree to simple facts or logic.

    • @jerrickmarques8777
      @jerrickmarques8777 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's funny because most of what he said about the job environment doesn't seem accurate at all. There are tons of new ads every day trying to find construction workers at every skill/experience level here in Vancouver. And this is two years later, pay is good too considering you don't need any experience or education for basically any of them. I think he's just mad because his skill is probably not as valuable as he would like to think it is. TBH he sounds really dumb and it sounds like his whole viewpoint is suited for whatever his wants are at the time and would do a 180 if he was in a different position.

So infuriating to listen to people who have zero understanding still throw around ad hominem, personal insults. It is why, unless you have a platform like this, it is not worth it to discuss it with certain people. It all needs to be from own experience (statistics and means are worthless, because I've seen ... whatever), everything needs to be discussed because something didn't sit right with them (for example: "crappy" jobs) and at the end of the day certain arguments will just subconsciously go right out the other ear.

  • @Fu4li
    @Fu4li 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If the minimum wage is increased people will earn more money. They will spend more money which will increase demand and profits for companies. The more demand the more jobs will be created. I dont buy your premiums that companies will raise the cost of goods, because competition is too high. If minimum wage was increased past a certain threshold then it would be bad and then companies would have to increase the cost of goods, but were nowhere near that my dude. Minimum wage has been basically frozen for the past 15 years, but profits haven't.
    Another major benefit for min wage increase is more taxes will be collected. As you alluded to companies dont pay their share in taxes. The tax system has all types of loopholes that often takes a companies tax liability down to zero. If some of that capital is shifted to employees then they will not have loopholes and will pay taxes.
    We then use that extra tax revenue to fund certain smaller companies that may not be able to afford min wage and have extra tax revenue for other uses.
    I dont know this is kind of basic stuff and I dont know how anyone could disagree with this. Poor people should love this because they earn more, corporations should love this because sales will skyrocket, and even sexist Jordan petterson fans should love it, because more men could afford to support their household and their wives could go back to their traditional roles if they wanted.
    I know your not talking about min wage, but I've heard you fight against it before. I think you learned about a hypothetical scenario in your economic class, but that scenario assumed min wage was being bumped past a certain threshold. Are min wage has been held back due to systemic corruption, so that scenario your professor taught you about is irrelevant to the situation at hand.

    Easiest argument against this guy’s “decreased immigration means higher salaries” argument. Automation is cheaper than the average American worker’s base pay. Getting rid of immigrants who do these farming jobs or similar means increased automation, not increased employment and wages.

    It really feels like to turn people like this fella around you have to convince them of your conclusion by using the evidence they've already gathered even if the argument you're making is illogical. Then when you have them in agreement to the conclusion, the idea can be reinforced with logical arguments. They're already in a state of mind that what they know is all that needs to be known so providing more information doesn't cause them to doubt their position but instead readily wave off any new data that doesn't support it.

    This guy is actually not "too far gone"
    He just has a few fundamental flaws that prevent him from seeing the obvious. Most of his concerns are valid and relevant, but they are problems with insufficiantly regulated capitalism and they won't go away by reducing immigration. The drain on peoples economic resources and worktime come from the enourmous profits companys and very few rich people are allowed to have and from the unjust system of property distribution

  • @TheAwesomoe
    @TheAwesomoe 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I know that you don't have to adress every single fact that is incorrect, but at 1:16:39 -ish, he just lets the man believe that the quality of life has gone down because "hurr durr capitalism"? Obviously the market is moving forward, globalism is not something that we can halt. Halting progress has never worked since the introduction of ... speech. There are arguments to be had for supervising certain aspects of globalism. For example pure capitalism would be too harsh against certain people, there would be nothing stopping the decrement of wages for the working class. Alongside every step of progress mankind has lost something, for example wheat fields were hell to work at (in comparison to hunting), but now people had food. It allowed us to move forward and better the equipment and invent the wheel and such. Halting progress because you want your local farm market food and days spent at a lake fishing is a bit idealistic. You don't need all this extra stuff, but it is supposed to help people move things along better, hence the standardized homes that weren't built by your neighbours and community. You move forward so that you can reinstate that old luxury, throughout there have been times where we went the wrong way and it took way too long, but that is what you got to strive for.
