      there is a huge difference between helping someone with your own will and forcing all of society to bow down to the lowest common denominator of society. its not fair someone pointed at you in school and you got sad and stuffed food into your mouth until you are 400 lbs. that sucks but society should not have to pay for your medical care.

      Actually it would be fair because as a society they would have agreed to provide the same protections to any one needing help. If you don't care for that type of insurance then move to a place where other people agree with you. But at this point i feel, like you might as well criticize the general idea of taxes if you're going to complain about shit like this

    That analogy was incredible. Even with all the time I had to get used to this guy, I'm still pretty shocked at how he responded to it. "if you remove the hurdles they won't learn to jump over them." By this guy's logic it feels like we should actually just be trying to insert as many hurdles as possible into rich peoples lives so they can become better people. I mean life's not fair right?

    • @joshholland90
      @joshholland90 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      That was my exact takeaway as well. He's speaking about the hurdles as if it's virtuous to overcome them and then immediately after that he says that rich people don't have to jump those hurdles. The conclusion logically follows that rich people would benefit from learning the hard lessons of those hurdles so we should try to insert them where we can.

    Digging yourself out of a 10 ft hole is harder than starting from the surface. You can tell this kid started from the surface and thinks he knows the struggle of living paycheck to paycheck having barely enough money to keep the lights on. I don't get why Destiny didn't bring up that most DMV's are only open during the work week and during normal working hours. Vincent But here specifically you're arguing against helping the poor...
      Destiny is trying to argue that he wants to level the playing field. If you needed birth control, you don't need to put in nearly the same amount of work and effort to get it compared to a poor person that needs it. You say you value hard work but that's something that it seems like only poor people need to do (in this case, to get birth control).

    • @ExtropianKnight
      @ExtropianKnight 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Giving people birth control and access to public school is not "giving them everything", it's investing a comparatively small amount of money to combat a problem that will cost the state a lot more if ignored. No amount of narrative pushing is going to stop poor people from fucking so you will be dealing with the problem in some form no matter what.
      Also, we could probably teach you a lot by seizing all of your family's assets and forcing you to live naked in a sewer eating rat meat. Adversity can teach you things. The point is that us non-poor folks are not expected to have any of those skills, and yet when we have the opportunity to alleviate some of those problems we hear "oh but then they'll never learn!" well if it works for all of us non-poor folk to never be forced to learn these things then what's the point of making sure they do?

      Civilization is a society or place that reaches a stage of social development and organization that is considered advanced.
      I have yet to find an successful advanced culture that allowed a true welfare state, in the long term. Just because half a population is lazy, useless, irresponsible, or retarded doesn't mean the other half that is self-sufficient, responsible, savvy, and hard working should automatically have to pay for them. People who put an emphasis on community tend to be losers who can't stand on their own or are unwilling to compete.
      You and those like you live in the United States because you are "allowed" to. The population is large enough that the government doesn't want to spend money to micromanage you life, and would be contrary to a little thing called FREEDOM. Because the USA is not like China which is literally trying to track your daily activities by the year 2023 (time spent driving, time spent on the internet instead of outside, time spent watching TV, etc.) to judge you as a good enough citizen worthy of tax breaks or government assistance. If you would like more oppressive, authoritarian government that promises no hunger while also limiting everything else you can do in life - please feel free to move there.

    A child does not personally choose to be born into a family that is poor.
    If you believe in equality, you want everyone to have equal opportunities from the day they are born.
    You do not want one kid to be born rich and another kid to be born poor. The rich kid will have much more of a chance to become a productive member of society even if the rich kid makes more mistakes than the poor kid.
    In order to prevent things like this from happening, we turn to policy.we tax wealthier people and provide welfare to poor people as an attempt to level the playing field. We tax inheritance and provide public education as an attempt to level the playing field.
    Destiny had the perfect example. Running a race where one person has hurdles and one person doesn’t is ridiculous. That means the person with hurdles must work twice as hard just to be tied with the other person. The person with hurdles has to take “personal responsibility” for a situation he himself had no choice in being placed in.
    A person isn’t personally responsible for the situation they are born into. That argument is complete bullshit.

      that's the difference between the right and left. left believe in equality of outcome and right believe in equality of opportunity. unfortunately nobody on the left realizes that. 'leveling the playing field' as you people say is the worst possible thing that you could do, first of all because it is impossible to totally control the environment in wich somebody is born. there will always be people more poor and more rich whether you like it or not, it is inevitable. what the right says is we cannot control in wich envirement you are born but we can make sure to give you opportunities to get out of it. and say what you want but there is no other place in the world than capitalist countries where you can start at the bottom of the ladder and finish at the top! many countries have tried the ' level the playing field method' (wich is also known as socialism).and it as never worked so far. not even remotely close. also it has led to the death of more than 100 M people in the last century... capitalism is not perfect but it is by far the best system in wich you can live in 2019.

    My whole thing is if the guy's only real rebuttal is "Life's Not Fair." He should stick and land on that. Don't try to justify it by saying "You can't give people free shit cause then they'll never learn. People must face the consequences of their actions..." and then admit that well off people don't have to face the same consequences.
    Just say, "I don't give a fuck what people have to go through, life isn't fair. I know it's irational and fucked up but I like to feel superior to others and watch them suffer and I also don't want to compete with poor people who are given the same opportunities as me because I know I was pampered all my life and I'll get obliterated if they were given the opportunities to succeed. The voter ID discussion led to the root of its cause (in a conservatives mind, anyways) which is believed by some to be the fault, or the lack of personal responsibility on the part of the voter, not the members of Government Who passed the legislation targeting said voters in the first place. It’s victim blaming 101. It’s essentially like blaming a grown person who was raped as a child for still having trauma from the situation and telling them to “take personal responsibility” for yourself and your situation. Even if the responsibility is not on that person. And there you have the boot straps meme in a nut shell. It’s victim blaming.
