The Bar-Kays (from my hometown of Memphis) were the pure essence of funk! And those horns--largely missing in today's music--were the stone cold truth!
I wanted to emulate Larry Dotson when I was in the 8th grade. The Enjoy album was my favorite. Larry was the black lead singer that had swagger and great stage presence then came Sugafoot of the Ohio Players, them boys could jam too.
My fav group.I play this cd smoking a good one, lol.Larry is talented as hell.A singer, composer, and producer. This down South music....James,the bassist,is Jazzy Pha dad.
I had always wanted to see this group, on stage and in their (own) home state, plus hometown, too, way back in mid '84 when I had been stationed, as a young Army trooper...blah, blah, blah... Still, I had never gotten a chance, albeit, perhaps, I could have, a few times...ah, but duty calls sometimes...seeing them on their own turf, their own stomping ground, as it were...Memphis? ah, but oh well... I still doubt that many out here, my age, my still upbringing, my still home state, can still, verily, say with me: I have ALL of their albums ever made, recorded, pressed, vinyled!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!classic, brilliant, 70s, 80s, and 90s..........................
My folks used to dance to this in the front yard and folks be pulling over to jam with us.Bell bottoms swangin and Chuck Taylors footprints all over the yard. One of uncles used to be roll up happy grass and be jankin everybody he see, lol! Now,I jam them Barkays and blaze some good grass!!!
The Bar Kay's what more can I say forever, jamming never sounding old forever new this is music 🎶 that reaches way down in the soul and makes you move even if you don't feel like getting down 😂😂😂😂❤❤❤
I'm the biggest Barkays fan it is,lol.Them my dudes there.Grew up listening to them and thats been 27 years ago.I can't wait to see them in concert.James Alexander is the father of producer Jazzy -Pha...Barkays from Memphis and they first hit was 'Soul Finger'.Check the vid out on here....
Funk like this made me the unique harmonica player I am today as Ive stolen a few of my tunes from the greatest funksters that also had me sharing the stage with a visit from Larry Graham when he come to Australia.Ive had a few comments on the way I play the mouth organ, its a hard one to explain when your raised on funk thanks to my older brother who had the best Funk collection in New Zealand back in the day but the blues had me @ 16 yrs old back in 1986 when Stevie Ray Vaughn hit the vinyl.Played Bourban Street just before the 9/11 doing a 6 week stint in the states.Love my Funk always will, thanks to all the Nubian Nation ,you can,t fake the funk Peace
THIS IS THE SONG THAT MADE THE BARKAY COMEBACK,AFTER THE TRAGIC PLANE CRASH COMPLETE! 'SHAKE YOUR RUMP TO THE FUNK' FROM THE ALBUM "TOO HOT TO STOP 1976" IS A FUNK CLASSIC! LADIES AND GENTLEMEN THE REST IS FUNK HISTORY!
He gave them a voice just like JT did with Kool the gang Kool and was good before JT but they needed a lead vocalist so they wouldn't be a average funk band the same with the Bar-Kays
This video is the actual song recorded for the stereo record vinyl and tape media to be produced in 1976 ; for the radio and extended album versions. The Real Macoy. No Joke. Excellent 👍 Video.
Yeah,I was looking at Staxwatt and they said it was in 1972 when they performed.I kind of figured James didn't wait 9 years to reform the grop, because thats alot of time to trying to put a band together. But they rock hard at Staxwatt in '72.Son of Shaft be jamming. You have to really like funk to understand the Barkays.
Cauley survived the crash, Alexander wasn't on the plane. They both reformed the Bar-Kays wth new members still recording for Stax. You can see the reformed group in the WattStax concert film performing and also backing other acts. That band with some member changes are the group you see here. Booker T and the MG's were Redding's studio and touring group until that tour in 1967.
My favorite funk group is my home boys the Bar-Kays. Larry went through every faze of life. I know the word on the street. Rick James was a Larry Dotson knock-off. I wonder how Larry felt when Rick James and his punk-funk came to town back when he dropped Street Songs ..... and broke Elvis Presley's records at the Mid South Coliseum? Rick James was a Larry Dodson impersonator! What a slap in the face to the hometown band. They never got the credit they deserve at home. They had us rocking so many summers with their hits. When they dropped "Do it Let me See You Shake" there is not a woman on the planet that can do that dance better than Memphis girls.... I live in L.A. now.... trust me.
If I'm not mistaken, this was the first record I ever bought in my life. I was about 14 at the time. It was a 45. I have no idea what happened to it. I probably threw it away because I scratched it to death from playing it so much.
The text is misleading/incorrect. The Bar-Kays did not wait 9 years (until 1976) to reform. The released an album in 1969 and had a hit in 1972 with "Son of Shaft". "Shake Your Rump To The Funk" is from the new Bar-Kays' fifth album, "Too hot to stop". See their discography at Discogs. Pretty good video of a good band, with the energetic Larry Dodson at the front.
I've been a Bar-Kays fan since way, way back... But, I confess, I've never actually really had taken notice of this original video from them (I thank the uploader of this, too)... Since, it definitely doesn't seem to be on Soul Train or American Bandstand...cuz, even rock bands, like Kiss, Ozzy, etc., could get away with decapitating animal's heads, etc., but their look, dress, here, seems, to me, to be a cross between punk rock, so-called black rock, competion w/ Rick James' super freak stuff, U.S. southern version of a contorted bootsy collins, parliament, funkadelic, Saturday Night Fever, "jungle boogie"...or....?
Hey my bros use to jam these sounzzz on a little stereogram we owned, this is just TOO coolll, shake it like you wanna shake it, yeeahh yeeahh yeeahh yeeahh...
What I've miss the most, when bands or groups would performed on music shows or live TV Entertainment shows, they perform with live music. NO LIPS SINGING B$%^!!!!
Can not believe this is still unbelievable funk in 2024
Yes,a tie between " The Barkay's " and " Kool and The Gang " both had killer horn sections.
@@peterdarrylslaughter7390 As well as SLAVE!

I must agree with you on that Larry Dobson was something Special not enough Respect for them they just don't know
This is one stone cold groove! When funk was REAL, baby!!!!! Brick, Slade, Ohio Players, P-Funk......it was awesome!
SLAVE......Thank you though Slade is a rock group.
Love the Bar-Kays. This is that boogie down funk 🔥🔥🔥

I was a Top-40 DJ when this song hit. We played it "about a bunch." Great track, and you can't hide from the beat to this day!

The Bar-Kays had the funk 'locked' down. The horns were 'Nasty'. Good stuff!!!
The Bar-Kays were so underrated. Great music and very talented musicians.
Yes.
Session and Studio players are always the best musicians. This band was tight
Barkays are incredible!!!
damn, i haven't heard this in years. Still as funky as ever to my ears. I gave me ears a treat tonight. Funk Fo-evah
This edition of the group was the funkiest in my opinion
Saw them onstage in 1979 with Cunfunkshun and Switch. The old Chicago Stadium where Michael Jordan first played for the Bulls.

When the 70's style re-emerged during the 90's and 00's I was so hoping that platforms became popular for guys to wear, because I wanted some so bad.
I was able to get a few on ebay in the last decade. But the real true vintage platforms were hitting hard! like $100 and up!
I found a giant bag full of platform shoes in a thrift store bin.............I don't have a store so what could with them?
This was one of the baddest bands
this was the jams back in the day and still is y'all don't no about the old school stuff that's what's popping till the end of time
