Rick Mast was my favorite driver as I grew up in Lexington, VA. Dale Jr also was my favorite. However, I was a Dale Sr hater growing up until he showed up to sign autographs at Rick's Annual Charity event. Dale had been in a wreck the previous week and got out of the hospital and took a chopper up to Lexington. That was a class act and since then I became a Dale Sr. fan. Thanks for having him on Dale Jr.

I grew up in the same area as Rick Mast and folks he is just a good ole boy! I mean a nice guy no different than your buddy at work. He is a quiet guy who yea likes to talk but would most like to just fade into the background. We didn't grow up in a poor area but as Rick said it was remote as far a racing went. His family owned a dirt track in Natural Bridge Va. where he cut his teeth beating and banging. I believe his father in-law really got him out of that local racing scene and into more of a statewide group of racers. You do not see racers like Rick anymore because they are not smooth enough or cool enough or let's say good looking enough. Now days sponsors are hiring a spokesman as much as they are a racer and they are looking for polished pitchmen or women. Sort of sad really!! These guys helped build the sport and I think are missed!!

So many memories in this one. I saw Rick win the bush race at Richmond maybe the 2nd or 3rd year of the new track. He's the first driver I ever saw have success running a higher line there. I saw him and Tommy Ellis run at Southside many times. I saw Emanuele Zervakis' black eyes but never knew how it happened. My parents were just a day away from closing on a new house just down the street from Rick when dad lost his job and we had to pass on it. And when Sportcenter came on to announce Dale's death, I was watching in a restaurant with some friends and the table next to us was Tommy Ellis.

I met R Petty at a ARCA race in Colorado, at a small speedway. Was close enough to say hi and reach a hand shake but wasn’t expecting him and didn’t get his autograph.
I live here in Michigan about an hour from MIS, roughly 15-18 years later during a race weekend R Petty was at Cabela’s in Dundee, Michigan. Little did I know you had to be the first 300 customers with a small Petty die cast in order to get in line.
I had a unopened Wheaties Cereal box with Richard Petty right? I was there for 3-4 hours trying to get the guys autograph. It was towards the ending, I’m on the outside area looking in, Richard kept going from a Cabelas golf cart to other Cabelas merchants and sining them right. The man was 3 ft from me acting like he couldn’t hear me hey King, Richard, Hey Petty will you sign my box please. I was getting mad at the guy.
I swear I asked him a hundred times, got frustrated and told my buddy let’s go. I get halfway to the car and said Hell No! I was 5 ft away from him in Colorado while he was grand marshal and here
I finally got close enough to him again more prepared and said hey Richard will you please sign my cereal box and he did!
Now that’s a great story but not so great of an ending. First of all I asked my buddy (this was when flip phones were the new) I asked if he took a picture of me shaking his hand, him signing it, idiot didn’t do that either. That’s why not gave you the stupid camera buddy!
So with pride I put my cereal box on the top shelf inside a wooden/glass China cabinet. I hadn’t gotten it certified yet but it was in good room temperature away from dust etc.
I come home from work one day, my woman is acting strange, I asked her if she’s okay. She said she’s sorry he didn’t know. I said he didn’t know what? He didn’t know that the cereal box was Dada’s, it’s not to be touched. Yep I felt sick! I can’t blame him he was just 3 yrs old.
Luckily I am still with her today and my only baby is 13 years old today!
Thought I’d share my life as Jim Morrison would say, ..People are Strange, when you’re a Stranger.
I do have a great picture of Dale Sr standing with R Petty. Location or track is unknown but I’m assuming it was sometime between 1984-1990.
I would have to dig it up, I believe he was sponsored by the Wrangler wearing gold and blue or something like that..

When he was telling the story about Sr. saying "Sorry I got on the apron." i didn't believe it for one second. After video review, he was telling the truth. Looks like he went to defend his line as DW was looking low going into turn 3. Sr. hit the apron and cam up and just clipped Mast spinning him into the fence.

    • @wildwind4456

Generally if Dale wrecked someone on purpose, he wouldn't deny it. This is the reason I believe him when he said that he didn't actually intend to spin Labonte that one time. He even admitted he hit him on purpose, he just said he didn't mean to turn him, after all. Generally, if Dale claimed something was a mistake, it really was a mistake.
This is the thing that separated Dale and the other old-school hard racers from some of the prima donnas that came along later (see: Logano). Those guys owned their actions, while Logano and his ilk never did.

I don't know if Sterling will ever make it on the show. That's probably a tough interview for both sides. I don't think Sterling was the biggest Sr fan either.

billy farmer ...Dale Sr. helped “Swervin’” Ernie Irvan a lot back in the day. I’m almost positive he’ll be on the Download sometime this season...

The one time that Jimmy Spencer was truly scared of someone, he thought Rick was going get his gun, so he yelled at him as he was walking away. Snapped him back and who knows, it may have saved Jimmy's life and Rick from spending life in prison. I have seen some short track exchanges similar myself.
