- For the first time, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Ward Burton discuss their infamous run-in at Bristol Motor Speedway in 2002. Dale first shares his side of the story and Ward recalls what was running through his mind that night. Then he shares his perspective on his decision not to throw his helmet and why he wishes his car restarted.

Yeah, watching Ward Burton on race day, you wouldn't know it. He's very serious about racing and super focused.
I heard him on race when he came back and drove that 4 car which was so bad he described it on the radio as "runnin like a 3 legged goat" Hilarious, although he was serious as hell about it.

Ward is absolutely right. Junebug sure did have the weight of the sport on his shoulders. I could just feel it. Also with tears in my eyes hearing Jr talk at the end about learning from everyone. I miss seeing you out there racing bud!
He carried the sport a long ways. How he didn’t crack or just plain leave the sport is truly amazing. Reminded every week for years of how much the fans missed his dad.

The thing I've been noticing lately is when Jr explains how he was able to very quickly become the face of Nascar he admits conversations he had with those in Nascar that he wanted to be proud of him and how those conversations kind of steered him onto the course he continues to follow up through these days and the respect he's earned over the last 20 years and I think his commentator jobs as part of the booth crew on TV has helped him have his sort oobjective looking at what's happening with Nascar and how he wants to help steer Nascar in the direction he was raised to believe it should be going and I think Sr and grandpa Ralph are both proudly looking down and saying "the 👦 is doing good

Ward was always my favorite driver. I think he’s a awesome guy and I wish he would have got a top ride back in the day!!!!
Kyle is probably the closest to tjat we have. He says what he really thinks and doesn't care what people think. Especially with the media but its deserved. The other day i saw a press conference from the 500 in 2019 and he stopped a reporter in the middle of his question because he didn't have his facts and history right. I am 13 years old and i feel like i know more about Nascar and Nascar history than some of the reporters do lol

I remember when Dale Sr. died, and how many fans instantly placed their allegiance on Jr.
I thought he must feel like he has the weight of the world on his shoulders. Not only him, but Kevin Harvick, too. Both of these young men had an extraordinary amount of expectations placed on them. People were looking for a new favorite driver to follow.
Whether or not they felt it, they both handled it well.

I love that Dale Jr has learned so young in life that “there is beauty in truth.” The way he honors his father by speaking the truth and the way he allows others to be honest just speaks to what an authentic human being he is.
I was not a big fan of the Dale,but have tons of respect for Jr and his sister. Also,after watching the one with Kerry on it,they are real honest people.

@@Ghostmotorfinger I was a fan because Ward Burton said what he meant and didn't have a mean bone in his body and raced everyone clean as possible...unlike some of the 'fan favorites' from back in the day.

@@normanbyrne9868 Same for me except not being from Virginia. Couldn't dislike Ward or Jeff back in the day. Made the races Earnhardt's cars weren't competitive in more barrable.
From 7:29 onwards, I'm glad Ward said all of that. That was a nice heartfelt moment. That and many others from this, it was a really good podcast.
Ward made a huge point. Dale jr will never totally get the credit he deserves for the instant pressure he was under. He was the face of nascar overnight. I still say him and kelly is the next comparable team to hendrick. I hope to see them go cup one day.

God damn. Ward was right. Junior wasn't expecting such a huge compliment out of the blue, but Ward was right.
I've been saying for awhile now JRMotorsports is part of Dale's legacy and what dei should have been. Keeping veterans like Sadler and Justin in competitive equipment, believing in Brad and seeing his potential. Those are things Dale did, who knows how well Steve Park and Mikey could have done had things gone differently, as it was they became race winners because Dale believed in them when nobody else did. That's what Dale's legacy is to me, seeing the potential in a driver that nobody else did. Were it not for Teresa Truex would have won a championship years ago, but as it was he stuck it out, fighting for everything he could and when the dust settled he's a 3x champion (2 in Busch) and continues to be a threat every week.
Another reason why I liked Ward Burton as race car driver , honesty .
This is exactly the type of conversation that makes this show and Dale Jr so special.
Junior gives credit to the likes of Ward, DJ and Mark Martin for teaching him how to handle himself with the media, the fans and with other drivers. If only NASCAR had some mentors now to teach some of these punks a little class and integrity. Thanks for the interview, Ward. It’s been a while since we’ve heard from you.

Ward is one of the greatest personalities NASCAR ever had. I'm not saying THE greatest, but one of. He could take a joke. Was a good driver. And an all around good dude

What Ward said about Jr carrying the pressure, is something I’ve always thought about and worried about for Jr. But like Ward said, Jr did the greatest job carrying that load.
UK Nascar Fan here. Ward Burton was my favourite driver. Had the pleasure of meeting him at Darlington and he signed my program. I still have it. Love his accent. Its good to see his son doing well in Xfinity series.
Dale Jr. I watched my first race at 8 years old. You won Daytona. I love hearing your back story. But I want you to know that the way you carried your self in publics helped shape the attitude I have today. Thank you for giving me those race day to get away from my environment. Side note: today I am banker by day car collector by night, and kart racer on weekends. Thank you again you don't realize, and will never ever know how many lives you changed/turned around simply by driving a racecar.

That 2002 Bristol was probably my favorite night race. Several wrecks and tempers flaring. Ward Burton's interview after the wreck was classic
Ward was my driver back in the day for several reasons from his ability on the race track to his demeanor as a person. True story, at Atlanta in 2000 he walks past me on pit road on his way to the car to qualify, I was wearing the CAT jacket and we made eye contact so I said something like "Go get us a good lap" and he stopped, tapped me on the shoulder and not only thanked me for the support but ASKED if he could sign my team jacket, who does that? I'll never forget that day nor the accidental conversation we had up in Loudon the following year...just right place at the right time but this man proved to me that he is a true Southern gentleman if there ever was one. I was proud as hell to support him and that 22 CAT team.
My respect for Dale just continues to grow every time I get a chance listen to him.
I really really really enjoy these segments with the former drivers from back in the day. I could just sit for hours and listen to the older veterans discuss how NASCAR used to be (for the better, imo). From Waltrip(s), to Jarrett, to Burton(s) to the much older Cale, Bobby, Donnie, etc. I could listen to these men talk all day, especially when they bring up the old rivalries or even the slip ups that caused an unintentional wreck, such as this episode. Its really great after so many years that these two guys can come together and laugh about this one moment in their lives.
This is now easily my favorite podcast. Especially the ones with any of the older gen drivers, owners, or crew chiefs. I listened to both parts of the Andy Petree one this morning and it was just as good. Jr is really good at this. His Dad would be so proud of the man he became.

The last race I attended was at Texas. My best friend was a Kyle Busch fan and I a Dale Jr fan. Kyle won by a few seconds and Jr 2nd. My best friend passed 2 weeks later. I haven't been back since. I don't want to change that great time. Racing brings people together like nothing I've ever seen. Thanks guys!

It was always said that Ward grew up on the other end of the house from Jeff !! LOL 😂
That is what always got me. They are brothers and sound nothing like each other, even though they kind of look alike. Even Jeb and Harrison have different accents. Maybe Jeff was more of a bookworm and hung out with the nerdy crowd and maybe Ward was more involved in the hunting scene and being a backwoods Virginian.
Jeff always said, it was because Ward grew up in the South end of the house!

I used to live in n.c. And a guy in my neighborhood had an old ward burton race car in his driveway. I would always smile when I passed by that thing. Racing was good back then. I miss it.

Next to Jr.'s father, Ward was my favorite Driver. He is a "down to earth" person that I will always call a friend, just like Dale, Sr .
We had some good times in Daytona and after cutting Dale out of his car, I couldn't stand to loose another friend like that.

I took him out for dinner 🍽 a couple of times when he was down for testing sessions.
@@bertmustin I was a paramedic, but my job was a Captain on the Fire Crew. It was my crew (as well as myself) that cut the roof so that the ambulance crew could get him out... one of the worst days of my life 😪

It's pretty cool to watch how all the drivers that come on the show have such a tremendous amount of respect for Dale. You can tell it was earned on and off the track. Not just given to him because of Dale sr.

This was the first Bristol race I watched flag to flag, at 12 years old. Still my all-time favorite race, I'll put it on a few times a year. Thanks for the memories fellas!

One big thing from that race I weirdly remember is Todd Bodine spinning like 3 seperate times by himself in that 26 Discover car.
There are a few YT videos that I watch at a slow pace so I can soak it all in, no binge viewing, and this series is one of them. I grew up watching NASCAR and watch the reruns of those 70's through 90's all the time and then I get to see the drivers sit down with wisdom, truthfulness, the glint of racing and competition still in their eyes all sprinkled over with humor...its something to be savored. Thanks for sharing.

To those who say Dale Jr. can't drive...i watched him go into Turn 1 at Atlanta at 190+ mph in a 3,400 lb. car, and drift/hang the rear end up within inches of the fence...lap after lap.

Man I love Ward. What a great guy. He molded himself into a really great human being. He benefits lots of people, and is a great conservator of the land and natural resources. He was my favorite driver for several years, and he's perhaps even more impressive being who he is now. What a nice, respectful, and respectable guy. I hope he never changes.
It's nice to hear Ward Burton and be able to understand him...he used to have a very strong "accent" and I could not understand him. Seems like a really good, honest guy.

I have always liked and respected Ward Burton. After listening to this interview, I like him even more and have more respect for him. What a heartfelt interview for all three of them, but especially Jr and Ward. Thank you Ward for showing such compassion for Jr after Sr was gone. We all felt the weight of the world on Jr's shoulders, but it needed to be said by someone like Ward to tell Jr. Quite an emotional moment I would say. Nascar was never the same since the day we lost Dale Sr.

The Talledega crash Ward’s talking about was in 1998. Two years after SR’s 1996 crash with Ernie Irvan & Sterling Marlin. Dale Sr swept Dega in ‘99 and the last win in fall 2000. Bill Elliott was in the McDonald’s Car that ‘98 crash
That's right Chris......we were sitting in the Anniston Tower that day, and I'll never forget seeing Bill and Dale help each other down the banking down towards turn one. Bill took a vicious hit into the wall in the tri-oval and was shaken up pretty bad, but he refused a stretcher. Dale was shaken up too and went over to check on Bill. It was really neat to see two legends who have beat an banged for so many years, come together as wounded passengers just along for the ride, as they both climbed into the ambulance. It put a lump in my throat, as I was huge fans of both of these guys. Talladega. Man, I could write a book.
I read in a book called Wide Open that Ernie never called Dale after that wreck, and the next week at the Brickyard, Sterling Marlin had to be held back from kicking Irvan's ass in the garage. Of course, there was animosity between the two, with the way Irvan left the #4 for Yates. They didn't call him "Swervin' Irvan" for nothing!
@@tagnut1952 That is the coolest thing I’ll hear today! I never was able to go to Talledega but it’s always been on my list. I watch replays of the races there all the time. I remember in the post wreck interview in 1998 Dale Sr. Mentioned that the fire had singed the mustache hair and he just chuckled and said “I’ll have to grow some new ones”. Dale Sr was one of a kind.
