  • This video was sped up to 115% range speed to shorten the length of video. The hike from the bottom of the Half Dome cables to the top took 32 minutes in total (the average is 30-45 minutes)
How to get permits for Half Dome:
    - You must have a permit to ascend the subdome steps and Half Dome cables. Day hike permits (valid from 12:00 AM midnight to 11:59 PM) are available by two lottery processes.
    - The preseason lottery application occurs throughout March, with results announced mid-April.
    - A smaller number of day hike permits are available every day the cables are up, via a two day in advance daily lottery.
    - Multi-day hiking permits (overnight backpacking with an overnight stay at Little Yosemite Valley or other Wilderness location) are not available through the lottery process. More information on multi-day hiking in Yosemite is available at: www.nps.gov/yo...
    Important dates:
    - March 1-31, 2024: Preseason lottery
    - April 11, 2024: Notification of results of preseason lottery
    - May 19, 2024: Preseason lottery acceptance date
    - May 22-October 13, 2024: Daily lotteries (apply two dates in advance of desired hiking date)
    - May 24-October 15, 2024: Half Dome Cables are up (adjusted based on conditions)
    Daily Quota:
    - The daily permit quota is 225 hikers each day on the Half Dome Trail beyond the base of the subdome.
    Recommendations for the climb:
    - First and foremost - BE NICE! Everyone we encountered was extremely kind and considerate along the way. This can be a different version of a challenge for everyone both mentally and physically - just remember to be patient with those around you because they will appreciate it.
    - Pace yourself and take breaks when you need them - It is not a race to the top! This is a grueling hike all around but the dome itself is extremely steep. We could have climbed it faster, but the stops were necessary for us to help with the nerves/anxiety/fear.
    - Wear stable shoes that are comfortable and treaded. My hiking shoe of choice is Soloman’s, but anything works! I feel that sneakers would be more likely to slip in some of the smooth regions. Additionally, you saw one individual wearing slides coming down the dome - I cannot recommend this but for him it worked better than other alternatives.
    - Bring a water bag with you - Not just water bottles. It would be extremely difficult to have to retrieve water when going up or down the dome. Having it easily accessible was a must!
    - Wear a harness and carabiners for added safety. This is not done by most individuals, but I would have felt a lot more comfortable had I had them - Especially when coming down.
    - Bring gloves for gripping and protection of your hands from the metal cables. On the way back down, we saw that some individuals brought extra and left them at the bottom for others to use - This was so kind of them to do!
    - FINALLY - Make sure you have your permit to hike Half Dome and some form of identification that matches the name on the permit. There is a Park Ranger that is present that will check your permits and match them to your identification.

That’s crazy steep! The park needs to install another cable on the left side. A path for people to go up and a path for people to go down. And add more tread for more traction and less slipping. I would feel rushed knowing people were waiting.

    • @__wildandwanderlust__

@@TonyaMichalsky we said the same thing! We also said it would be nice to have another cable running underneath the other one in case you slip you would have one closer to grab.
I will say that I didn’t feel rushed. People were pretty patient and we would either let them pass or they would just go slower. We weren’t gonna pass though 😅

    • @danmackey9462
      @danmackey9462 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

The cables are the strongest part of that system. The poles and wood and even the rock around the poles will give out before those cables snap. If they are in good enough condition for hands to hold them then they are no where near damaged. I'd be far more worried about the poles being wobbly than the cables.
