I have hiked Yosemite a fair amount. It's a huge park and many areas are virtually empty, even on the 4th of July.
Half Dome has never interested me. Possibly because I've spend so much of my life commuting in crowded BART trains.
I also don't like to take unnecessary risks.
My opinion is that the cables fool people into thinking that it's safe and that you don't need a harness.

@@brendashelonko2149 Evidently, the park rangers give people a presentation at the base and they tell you that if you think that you need a harness, then you probably shouldn't be doing the climb.
This probably just discourages the use of their harness rather than making them turn around.
I was there on the Mist Trail about two weeks ago and the thing that bothered me the most was seeing people, with their young children, cooling off in the river just above the falls.
This was 20 feet behind the Nevada Falls cliff.
I had to leave the area because I couldn't watch it.
It was like watching a person changing a tire in the center lane of a busy freeway with a minivan of children.

I only heard she fell going down when it started to rain and that there were wood blanks. Never hearing of this peak before. So it wasn’t hard to find where she must have fallen. Please help me with something. Do you not have to clip yourself onto the rope when going up or down ? And if you are clipped how far would you fall ? Like how far between each notch in the rope?
It seems this is not like Everest where you don’t have to necessarily have to have previous experience climbing. So if that’s the case you’d think they should make it way safer. Needing gear to clip and the wood slats being closer together. More of them. Maybe adding two between the ones they already have.

Began hiking in the Sierra in early 70's, including several hikes up Half Dome, when you could go there even on a holiday weekend and it was uncrowded, and it was possible to drive around from place to place in Yosemite Valley and have no problem with traffic jams and finding parking. The park has become slammed with massive crowds, a process that accelerated with Covid. Sad that Half Dome requires a permit, but lots of You Tubes show the recent congested, hazardous conditions on the cables with heavy uphill and downhill traffic on the outside of the cables. This isn't the only place in the world where the experience just ain't what it used to be and won't be getting better.

Needing a permit to climb a mountain is WILD

    • @CarrieHall
      @CarrieHall 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I think it's mainly so if something happens to you, they know who you are, where to look and who your family is, to notify them. Not like permission.

@@CarrieHall Nah for a mountain like Half Dome it's to prevent overcrowding. Half Dome might be the most famous day hike in the country and it was so so overcrowded. The permits are cheap enough but limiting quantities keeps it from just being a conga line up a rock.

    • @Deathranger999

You can hike most of the trail without a permit. During busy season when the cables are up, you need a permit to go on the subdome to prevent overcrowding.

There should be *way more* done to improve the safety of hikers & climbers at parks like this.
    It’s so upsetting 😔
