When you're doing something like this, it's fine. Everyone there went trough what you did, so it's cool. Yosemite is so crowded now, you'll never do this alone. We were there in 1987, it was empty.

I have hiked Yosemite a fair amount. It's a huge park and many areas are virtually empty, even on the 4th of July. Half Dome has never interested me. Possibly because I've spend so much of my life commuting in crowded BART trains. I also don't like to take unnecessary risks. My opinion is that the cables fool people into thinking that it's safe and that you don't need a harness.

This probably just discourages the use of their harness rather than making them turn around. I was there on the Mist Trail about two weeks ago and the thing that bothered me the most was seeing people, with their young children, cooling off in the river just above the falls. This was 20 feet behind the Nevada Falls cliff. I had to leave the area because I couldn't watch it. It was like watching a person changing a tire in the center lane of a busy freeway with a minivan of children.

Half Dome is not the hike to do to get as far away from the public as possible. If you want to get away, you need to hike the Thorofare I. Yellowstone NP. Never saw anyone e for 8 days, but saw grizzly and wolf tracks almost everyday!

All I can think about now is that beautiful young woman falling to her death right in front of her father 😩😞😞. I only heard she fell going down when it started to rain and that there were wood blanks. Never hearing of this peak before. So it wasn’t hard to find where she must have fallen. Please help me with something. Do you not have to clip yourself onto the rope when going up or down ? And if you are clipped how far would you fall ? Like how far between each notch in the rope? It seems this is not like Everest where you don’t have to necessarily have to have previous experience climbing. So if that’s the case you’d think they should make it way safer. Needing gear to clip and the wood slats being closer together. More of them. Maybe adding two between the ones they already have.
You aren’t required to clip on at all. With hikers going up and down constantly that type of system wouldn’t work. I too am devestaed by the young woman felling in front of her dad.

Going up with those slings is no safer than going up without. The slings are static. If you did slip, you'd probably end up breaking your back. You need some spring in there to absorb any shocks. Get a via ferrata kit. Or any of the dynamic slings for industry climbers
60 People have died between half dome and the trail leading up to it over the years. I guess that's a small percentage compared to the number I've done it but no thank you. Looks way too risky to me!
I went to Yosemite❤ and took a whole bunch of pictures and was very suprised to see all the hikers (look like ants) going up the side of the rock, when I got home!😮
Began hiking in the Sierra in early 70's, including several hikes up Half Dome, when you could go there even on a holiday weekend and it was uncrowded, and it was possible to drive around from place to place in Yosemite Valley and have no problem with traffic jams and finding parking. The park has become slammed with massive crowds, a process that accelerated with Covid. Sad that Half Dome requires a permit, but lots of You Tubes show the recent congested, hazardous conditions on the cables with heavy uphill and downhill traffic on the outside of the cables. This isn't the only place in the world where the experience just ain't what it used to be and won't be getting better.

I just got 4 dollars off 20 dollars of Aleve with a coupon that needed me to go back to the aisle and check the terms of the coupon and show the cashier before she let it go through. Basically the same thing.

@@CarrieHall Nah for a mountain like Half Dome it's to prevent overcrowding. Half Dome might be the most famous day hike in the country and it was so so overcrowded. The permits are cheap enough but limiting quantities keeps it from just being a conga line up a rock.

I climbed half dome without a permit, 30 years ago

Having done the cables (with a permit!) I wouldn't wait hours to go up. The hike is fun enough and the views of the valley are worthy enough.

I was there, but hiking Ribbon falls and working in Mariposa.
I was supposed to do the cable hike on the 29th. Ended up in inpatient instead. Guess I'm waiting til next may now
