This video is all about whether or not you actually need a drone for your youtube channel's cinematography, videography, or vlogs. I have a four step process for you to go through, which will hopefully guide you to make the best decision when looking to buy a drone from DJI or any other brand.
Step One: Can you afford it?
Drones are very expensive. You need to be sure that you're in a financial situation that it wont be harmful to you in other more important ways, to buy the drone.
Step Two: Will you use it?
Obviously you'll fly the drone, but how often will you fly it? You want to be sure that you'' be getting your money's worth if you invest in a drone, especially if you go for a more expensive model like the DJI Mavic series.
Step Three: Will it benefit you?
This is pretty individual. Do you think that drone shots will actually improve your videos in a storytelling or pacing sense, or is a drone simply a fun toy that doesn't apply to your channel topic (i.e. Gaming).
    Step Four: Legal stuff
There are a TON of drone laws on the books now, and should be sure to follow your local laws. This can actually be a big problem for many drone pilots, because restricted fly zones can limit your drone usage, and drone registration becomes expensive and time consuming if you are registering your drone for commercial purposes. The best way to avoid drone restrictions is to buy a drone that weighs under 250 grams.

Hi Joe! Thanks so much for this video! Your video allowed me to think through this question rationally and thoughtfully. As much as I'd like to play around with a drone in my videos, it's not a need and not central to the direction I want to take my channel. Then I started thinking of what I could use that money on that would enhance most, if not all, my videos and not just a couple a year. This really was great; thanks a lot! Have a Purple Day!

Hi Joe! Just wanted to say I found your video really helpful. I actually scored 17, so apart from not actually being able to afford to get a drone for a little while, I think one would be really helpful if not essential right now. I'm disabled and a wheelchair user. I so often find myself saying "I wish I could take a video or photograph of that but I just cannot get into the right position to take the shot!" With a drone I could reach all those hard-to-reach places, for instance, if something I want to photograph is up a huge hill and mobility scooter just won't make it up that hill, I could launch the drone and take the shot! Anyway, you have a new subscriber my friend! Take care.

Thanks for watching! That’s a great idea, I’ve never considered how helpful a drone could be for someone with mobility challenges.

@@JosephMartin To be honest it's not something that many able-bodied people think about (with the deepest of respect) I mean, why would you? I think it's one of those things you don't really think about until you're in that situation.

I need a drone but I am NOT into photography at all. Many people assume that. For fun and casual use a hobby. They not expensive, there are many drones under £90. I live in a rural town so people are very traditional, so this will open peoples eyes to embrace technology and that these things exist.

No offense but every drone I’ve ever tried under 1000 dollars is a scam item

I feel so much content on TH-cam is geared toward trying to get us to buy things. Refreshing for some good down-to-earth perspective (pun intended)

I think one other thing that can help decide is, if it's a question you keep returning to. I've been thinking of getting a drone since I saw a DJI mini sponsor about a year ago. I've been on the bring of clicking add to cart maybe 12 times now. so if it's something you really feel like you're missing out on, something you urn for. then make it happen, and live that dream. where you're at right now you might be in the 1-2 video a month class. however if you had one would you be looking for ways to incorporate it and have more fun with one.

      Hi. I loved you comment.
I did the same thing with add to cart 😂
I went from DJI mini 2 se then I found out it did not have active tracking so then 3 mini and the 3 mini pro.
It came to and I'm looking at it now and I'm confused.
Did I buy it because of adhd hyper fixation or do I want it.
But after reading your comment... Well... I probably keep it 😊
Or I'll spend more time on wondering if I need it or not.
      Thank you

Bro this was a GREAT way of gauging where someone is at regarding anything to include drone use. I really think they’re cool, but I don’t see myself using it that much. I scored an 8. As an alternative, I’m considering the Insta360 X4 and/or the Go 3. POSSIBLY.
I’ll have to consider your method to those as well vs the cost. Good job and thanks.

    Money: 2
    Use: 2
What's the point? I just think the videos look really cool, but for what i do it can wait.
The legality? Here in México you can fly a drone up to 25 kg (around 50 pounds) but you have to register it, the process is free, so there's no negatives on that.
Great vid, love the topic and how you killed my compulsionary necessity of wanting a drone haha, keep it up!

Thanks for watching! I’m glad you found the mental process of going through the rating system was helpful. Like I said, it’s certainly not a perfect guide but I always find that going through that type of thought process for any big purchase really helps me be financially responsible, without ALWAYS being a buzzkill. 😂

Meh, I'm sorry but none of these questions helped me cause the only one I need to answer is WILL I USE IT? But I really don't know how to tell... And how much makes it worth it? How many of my subbies will even care? Many of them wrote me it would be the next step, so that made me think. I hate unoriginal stock footage. It would help with the story, but is it necessary? It would make my hikes more epic, but will it fit in? And most importantly: I hate - I find it f*cling disgusting (!) - to be that drone a**hole in public. That person with this loud noisy dumb thing. Is that worth it? You don't know until you test it... So what I'll actually do now is go out with another creator to film with his drone and see if I like it or not...

    • @SuunFreckles

I think you gave yourself the answer in your comment, at least back in the day when you made it. It’s such a substantial expense that if you do not absolutely feel you want to use it for the fun and the “epicness” of the shots, why would you buy it?
But I’m curious to know if your opinion on drones change in the end.

If you put your drone videos on TH-cam and it generates Ads income for you, FAA is not considering that as purely recreational drone flying, you need to get a license.

Great video. I scored 12, but I’ll refrain from buying now. It makes sense with limited usage, it’s best to stay with my gimbal and monopod.
By the way, for someone who isn’t aware, try using gimbal with a monopod, u can replicate a lot of drone shots.
